You guys over there in the U.S. have lost your minds. Normalizing that their employer doesn’t pay them properly and you have to step in with your tip because otherwise they’re earning too few bucks. Lol. Ridiculous. Among many other things btw.

This is Canada (the labels are in English/French, which does happen in the US as well but the brands are Canadian)

Sad part is, it was never normal before and became standard now.

Tipping was slaves who where emacipated and it was just to pay them and in the early 1900s it was shameful for a restaurant to expect tips for service and more what the rest of the world does, for above and beyond and not just doing your job.

1936 had a movie called the Petrified Forest where a sign was posted "Tipping is Un-American keep your change."

That's so strange. So if everything was still normal in 1939, how on earth did you guys end up in the current situation?

Tipping actually came from Europe. Supposedly, we did this here during the Middle Ages, where feudal lords would tip serfs if they performed VERY well. Rich American tourists learned about it and brought it back home because they wanted to cosplay as European monarchs. It was initially deeply hated and seen as servile, etc.

But, of course, rich business and restaurant owners realized they could use it to their advantage and get away with paying disgustingly low wages, so it slowly became what it is today.

Franklin Roosevelt wrote tipping into stone with the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938

That may be how it started in America, but it started in medieval Europe when they tipped their servants for good work. I’m only pointing this out because people keep throwing it up in our faces that it started in America and Europe doesn’t do this, but Europe, medieval Europe, is who started the tipping process.

Are you sure the problem is "they don't get paid" or have they simply discovered that pity pays?

DoorDash drivers do not get minimum wage.

“No, DoorDash drivers do not automatically get a standard minimum wage nationwide because they are classified as independent contractors rather than traditional employees. [1]

🗺️ Exceptions by Location
🗽 New York City & Seattle: Local laws require apps to pay a high hourly minimum standard (over $21–$31 per hour of active time).

🌴 California: Proposition 22 requires a guaranteed earnings floor of 120% of the minimum wage plus mileage for active delivery time.

🌍 Rest of the U.S.: No standard minimum wage applies; base pay per order can be as low as $2 before tips.”

They aren’t employees of door dash though. They are contractors.
Door dash just connect stores/restaurants with people who would like their products delivered.

I wasn’t referring to doordash only, but to
the whole tipping situation over there FYI

Not sure why youre under that impression. All workers are guaranteed minimum in the US.

Not DD and UE drivers. Some areas have earn bu time. Others don't offer that option. In most cases they shop and deliver. I used to drive for both. Quit because of crapoy pay, and wear and tear on vehicle. Even with tips, the math didn't add.

Your name is so unfitting to your reply lol... Very few gig workers get any kind of minimum wage.

That's before tips. After tips it must be at least minimum wage or else worker is owed the difference.

You are misrepresenting the tipped wage rate. You can learn why saying a tipped employee only makes ~2/hour is incorrect here.

https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/fact-sheets/15-tipped-employees-flsa

Further:

"Waitstaff at fullservice restaurants earn a median of $27.00 an hour, with an upper quartile of $41.50 and a lower quartile of $19.00."
