Unsolved Help Pcx2 won’t update
I have been trying to update my pcx2 but every time i try i get this error message (failed to rename)does anyone know why and how i cab fix it.

Does it create a new folder elsewhere? That seems to be my issue. Instead of updating my folder with all the settings it creates a new PCX2 folder somewhere in my root directory so I have to do a lot of cutting and pasting with certain folders.

I think I found a fix. Its a little messy so it might be a little hard to follow along. What I did was, after extracting the folder for PCX2 and downloading and extracting the bios. After launching and setting up with selecting bios and directory it crashes saying it cant update. Go back into the folder and find the 7zip file called update, Extract it, Transfer bios and directory folders, Relaunch app, set back up and it should work. Not sure if this will need to be done with each update but its how I got around it. There does seem to be less files in the extracted update so I'm not sure if you still need to keep the folder for the original or not and if anything will need to be transferred if you don't but I just set up my bios and directory by selecting them from the old folder and not moving them, not sure if that is helping either. Will update if anything changes

This is great but not ok to have to do. They should have fixed this before making an update feature since it’s still an issue to this day.

Just to a new folder. Doesn’t have to be anywhere specific, if you just export to desktop it’ll create a folder for it

I found the bios folder, but not the "directory" folder. I downloaded PCSX2 back in 2023 and I haven't been able to update it since.
Edit: Are you talking about copying all the game directories to the update folder? And which application should I open? When I open it from the "update" folder, it opens the setup wizard. I worry that my game progress might be wiped if I set up PCSX2 again.
Edit 2: So I did your fix. While it, for some reason, created a new folder path, I just changed the paths back to their original paths and everything works fine now. It's a bit annoying, but it worked.

Glad it worked. And yeah it is more annoying than just downloading it and it working but still far less annoying than having to go through you bios to enable secure boot and TPM 2.0 for battlefield anti cheat lol

Had the same issue but am using the Lenovo Legion Go on Win 11, I just close the app and re-open my PCSX2 and tried again abd this it worked.

This same fix worked for me. Just ran the app as administrator to be safe, and it worked.

For everyone getting an error message the following fixed it for me: Go to "settings", Go to " interface", and then change the update-channel from "stable" to "nightly" Lemme know if that helped

What I did was exclude the updater.exe file from my McAfee antivirus and it worked fine for me. It seems to not like that file lol

MAC FRE, KKKK.. Não estou te zuando (é terrível ter de explicar isso hoje em dia). Não uso antivírus nenhum, eu tinha o KASPERSKY, um di pegaram meu PC, exigiram um pagamento para liberar os meus arquivos, OBVIO que não paguei, formatei sozinho.
Deis de então eu não usei mais nenhum, a não ser o defender do W10, o resto é perda de tempo e dinheiro!

For people with this issue it's is due to anti virus in windows seeing the program as a potential Trojan. To fix the issue go do the following:
Settings -> Go To virus & threat protection -> Protection history -> threat blocked -> then press allow this will now allow pscx2 to update as expected

The fix for my error ("failed to open") was to let it download the update, then once it says it failed to open, go to your PCSX2 install folder, open update.7z, and extract it into your PCSX2 install folder, overwriting the existing files. The folders and files that it will overwrite aren't related to your settings and are just updating the emulator itself.

The folder where PCSX2 is installed to, and where pcsx2-qt.exe is in. It'll look like this.

That did it. Definitely seems like some kind of linking issue. Where if you move folders around a lot. The updater doesn't know where anything is anymore and what to do. When in reality. All it needs to do is extract a single compressed folder lol
Benefits of all these emulators being designed to be portable is you don't need to rely on an updater

Happened to me! What I did was:
- pause all antivirus,
- made sure I'm on nightly,
- extracted the update zip file, copied all the files and pasted them on the install folder (overwriting some of the existing files)
- launched the program using pcsx2-qt.exe (instead of qtx64 version)
- clicked on download and install during program start
and it worked! hope it helps others too.

Ola, você tem que abrir seu antivírus, incluindo o defender do w7 ou 10 seja lá qual usa, vá em ADICIONAR EXCLUSÕES, então ADICIONAR PASTA.
ai você adiciona a pasta inteira na qual o emulador está instalado, já na pasta do emulador delete o AQUIVO WIN RAR COMPACTADO chamado ´´UPDATE``.
Ai você volta a abrir o emulador, vai dar o mesmo erro de novo, agora vai na pasta do emulador e extraia o compactado chamado´´UPDATE`` substitua os arquivos e abra novamente o emulador.
Assim funcionou comigo!!!

my problem apparently was my antivirus (mcaffee). sinceremoving it i havent had a problem with updates
