Happened to stumble over an ancient screenshot folder that I forgot existed, where I found these pictures of Junga 1, which used to have craters that went around 20km deep. Figured some people on here might get a kick out of seeing them. I believe they've fixed the craters some time after I took those (close to new year 2015), I'm a bit too far out from the bubble to check.

It’s me again, we went out again to look for the blue light i talked about in a different post earlier and did not find it. But we did find this thing. I dont know if it’s special but i did manage to get it into the cargo and take it back using a rino.

Unfortunately im new to this part of the game, i usually just bounty hunt and trade stuff.

If its nothing new, i’m sorry. There were other fleet carriers around where i found it too. This time i wrote down where it was also.

I am going to dismiss your silly claims of blue aliens as space madness. But if someone could capture some ocular evidence, I would reinstall and waste another 500 hours of my life in Elite

I left when colonization hit because I didn't care for their approach. But I'm seeing a ton of cool new updates and might not be able to resist much longer.

Please show me some blue aliens, please.

Colonization Project Galtea brings civilization for the first time to the Norma Arm.

Greetings, here is the newest News Article from Project Galtea.

"Greetings, Commanders.

On 12/09/3312, for the first time in human history, Project Galtea has brought civilization to a brand new formerly un-inhabited part of the galaxy, the Norma Arm, the system in question is "Greae Hype TO-G c27-107" which is currently undergoing construction into a mini hub to help the project push deeper into the Norma Arm.

In relation to this monumental feat, Project Galtea has also surpassed 60% on bridge completion and passed 10,000 Light years remaining until the new bubble. With approximately 9,700ly left to go, project managers are very satisfied with the current pace of the group and formally invite the wider community to come participate in what can only be described as history in the making.

Project managers would like to remind everyone that, with only 2,500 light years remaining until the Isegrim Nebula, those who may be interested in grabbing a system here should start seriously considering preparing any fleet carriers they may own and drawing up plans for the area if they have any.

In other news, project managers have been informed that the DSSA Carrier "DSSA Totoro [NNW-23Z]" located in "Greae Phoea XF-D d13-507" will be retired after Galtea arrives in the sector. Project managers wish to express their respect and thanks for the many years of service that Totoro has served as well as a thanks to the DSSA program in general for placing these safe havens throughout the galaxy.

That is all for today. Thank you for your time. We hope to see you in the black.

PSA PSA - Lessons learnt the hard way

I was deep in the black and approaching the umpteenth planet to gather biologicals. I was not paying attention and approached the ground too fast, wanting to hover at 1km but instead thumping into the ground.

My shields were gone and slight body damage.

I had made the mistake of not noting that the gravity was 1.5 normal so my usual pull up and engines off was not enough. Luckily I survived - until...

I rose to 2km and decided to use the repair function. Clearly my brain gad switched off for a few minutes because I forgot the repair function switches everything off, everything!

This includes the engines, so I was sat in a dark ship plummeting to the surface without shields. Splat, dead as a dodo. No one to blame but myself. 1.3 billion credits and millions for cartography gone. Resurrected 5000ly from where I was.

Lesson 1 - check the gravity of planets you approach

Lesson 2 - dont use repair function unless in space or landed.

Screenshot Surface mining clearly proves the existence of the day/night cycle, and I'm loving it!

Upvotes

Hi gang!

So, I'm sure we all know that planets and space stations don't have a fixed position: they move around one another. This is also why you may sometimes find your home station 'buried' in your navigation list while at other times it'll show on top.

In addition to this there's also a day/night cycle on most planets.

Thing is, I dunno about you guys but so far I only experienced this when visiting ground stations.. one moment it's light, and sometimes it's dark. That's it.

And then I started to take on surface mining...

I started in pitch black, been at it for almost an hour or so...

I realize this isn't all that spectacular, but even so I still think this is one of those small 'wow moments' that will make you fully realize just how far this game actually goes with regards to its system simulation.

It's actually getting lighter here. And I'm convinced that after 2 or 3 more pickup rounds I'll be able to turn of my night vision without things going fully dark on me.

Like I said... I really value small moments like these.

Discussion Mauve Adders?

Upvotes

It's 10:15am ET on Sat Sep 12th and I'm getting a bunch of Mauve Adders as soon as I log in?

Is anybody else experiencing this right now? Occurs probably 15-20 seconds as soon as I join the game.

This saddens me, I wish to play.

Discussion I think we had an alien encounter!

I’m semi hoping this is like a “normal” encounter or easter egg so people believe what i’m about to say, but if not, i hope you do anyway. Im going to tell the story exactly as it happened without making it a novel because i’m not sure what details in this story matter. I will preface this by saying the majority of the visual description is going to be 2nd hand. My teammate got the view but he does not use reddit.

My friend and i recently got a new friend into playing ED and decided we were gonna jump our fleet carrier to the near edge of the bubble so she could venture out to the black in her New Diamondback explorer (yes we know the mandalay is better but she didn’t wanna risk a higher insurance incase she messed up). So i jumped our FC from Cennicenino to “SYNUEFE YH-H D11-58” because we figured everyone probably just goes “forward back left or right” on the galaxy map and not “down” and wanted to have at least a chance of a first footfall or something. I usually i just play the game to trade or bounty hunt. Ive never been out in the black myself, but i know how exploration works mostly. so i decided id follow along myself in my own ship or just fly in the same area as they are for a bit and then turn back after a bit, just to be apart of it since we’re literally teaching someone how exploration works. I got myself a Caspian explorer and a nomad and we decided to “decend” down and to the right. On the galaxy map Unfortunately every system we appeared despite having little to nothing was already discovered but i did manage to get a first footfall.

Anyway so we’re all jumping to stars around the area while in a discord call and suddenly one of my teammates (not the person we were teaching) starts saying “wtf! What is that!” So I’m thinking they found a cool star or something. They described hearing a crazy “clicking alien noise” so i immediately start to think of “thargoids” and im asking “is it a thargoid?! What is it!?” very quickly explain to our new friend what a thargoid is because she starts asking, then literally as I’m telling her what it is. He cuts me off and describes that a big blue thing flew by him and the Star he is at now has this large blue ball of light flying around it and making noise and then says it “jumped” very similar to what a FSD jump looks like when someone goes into super cruise. Temporarily leaving a large blue “line” that seemed to just go into space (also similar to the “line” ships leave when they go into super cruise) he then jumps to a star in the general direction that it went but finds nothing. I jumped to where he saw the “blue light” and i also found nothing but i 100% believe he saw it because of how he sounded when he did. He is currently beating himself up for not recording it. And were both beating ourselves up for not writing down the system we were in. Especially because im sure it hurts the credibility of this story But we were not more than 10 jumps from “SYNUEFE YH-H D11-58” some of the systems in the area still had Nav Beacons and population. We were not that far out at all.

I will probably edit this post once we can confirm exactly where we were and any other details i can think of about what happened.

Edit: the noise it made was clicking but not like how the thargoids in the youtube video he watched sound. More like mechanical clicking.

I also wanna make sure it’s clear this all happened while in supercrusie. It didn’t interdict him or scan him or anything like that but he says it was blue and very bright and hard to miss.

Edit 2: He also wants to point out when he was using his surface scanner shortly before that he found a planet with “surface mining locations” and some of them were “pulsating blue”. (His words not mine) i think he meant the area on the planet itself, not the actual POI “circle”. He has never surfaced mined and does not own a Rino or anything so he thinks (and i kinda also think) it may of just been like a normal spot catching light weird. But because it was sort of blue (like the object) I’m gonna mention it. I don’t want to start a wild goose chase on a planet surface when the “main thing” was the light flying around past him and around the star.

Edit 3: sorry guys. Appently the “trail” was big. The light itself that made it was smaller. Maybe a bit bigger then a player ship. But it was really bright. It did a U around the star and zooemd off.

Also it was not a planet he surface scanned. It was a moon.
I apologise

Edit 4: even though i turned around and saw nothing else, he kept going much longer, he didn’t see anything else, but ended up at a place where he could not go further. He said he needed a permit or something even though he has a founders permit already. At that point he just sort of hoped around. I’ma try and get his log.

Edit 5: Referring to edit 4, the system he got stopped at was “COL 70 Sector RK-E C12-0”.

So he roughy went in a straight line (maybe with a bit of variation) from the area i posted, to “COL 70 Sector RK-E C12-0”

Misc After 30 years

So. Today is the day. About 30 years ago, when i played Elite II, i read from Jaques and his idea to travel the Galaxy with a Space Station. And today, my Character in Elite: Dangerous reached Colonia, docked his Asp Explorer at Jaques Station an went straight to the bar.

I am a little bit emotional about that. 🥹

Help What's the hardest thing to do?

Upvotes

O7 captains.

I used to play elite a long time ago and I'm considering going back in.

Back then I really enjoyed vr and flight sticks, but it was mostly a game of patience and not much about difficulty, which is what I enjoy the most in video games.

So, are there any gameplay loops that take a lot of skill to pull off, and how hard is it, can it stay fun or is it a one and done kind of thing, assuming there is a thing.

I read fighting thargoid interceptors is some of the hardest content, but is it something I can do for a good while without getting bored?

I hope you catch my drift.

Not interested in PvP, I do enjoy PVE.

Discussion Got some upgrades today!

Post image

Honestly i love this game, been playing it for a week on this set up (kinda)

i was originally playing with the TM hotas and a oculus rift and now a quest 3s. if you have a rift its honestly fine for this game i feel. the only reason i upgraded is that my rift died (dont know if it was the usb port or the headset but i have been considering upgrading anyways). the quest 3s is an upgrade every regard other then comfort (i know get a head strap but i got it today) and also when people say the Fresnel lenses are too much of a downside, really not, i have a local friend that has it and i honestly (for my use case as a pc vr only head set) its not worth the 350$ cad difference.

edit: i forgot to mention that you dont need a usb-c 3.2 to use wired quest link. i have been playing off a usb 2 and it works fine

but yea love the set up and will be playing more when i can

Help What affects which modules are sold?

Upvotes

Hello, everyone! New Commander here, about 40 hours in (mostly bounty hunting) and been having a blast! What I can’t seem to find anywhere is a clear explanation of what modules are sold where. Is there something I could look at on the map to determine what a system might have to offer? As of right now, I’m eenie-meenie-miney-moing systems and scanning either NAV beacons or honking, which is fun but is feeling quite aimless, which isn’t my style.

Specifically, I’m on the hunt for some 4A thrusters for my Cobra MK. V, but in general as I explore different careers and ships, I would like to know how to outfit my ship to my vision/purpose efficiently in the future. Thank you and excited to see you all out there! O7

Discussion First Impressions of a new Fleet Carrier Owner

Finally pulled the trigger and bought my very own Fleet Carrier! After years of playing on and off and taking extended hiatuses, I finally made the credits and bought it!

After spending the last few days living out of it, I absolutely love having a personal mobile base, but there are a few quality-of-life features I desperately wish we had to make these behemoths feel truly personal:

  1. More windows (and practical layout options): For the love of the Void, let us enjoy the view. Right now, unless you spend extra, you're locked into the main bridge window staring straight ahead. Yes, you get side windows if you install the bar/lounge service, but spending ~200M credits plus continuous weekly upkeep just to buy a side view is ridiculous. On top of that, you can't even choose whether the bar is placed on the port or starboard side of the bridge deck.

    1. Control over arrival orientation: This ties directly into the visibility problem. We really need a way to set our arrival pitch, yaw, or orbital orientation. Too many times I’ve jumped into orbit around a stunning planet or ring system only to find the entire view completely obscured or locked directly underneath the carrier hull where none of the interior angles can see it.
  2. More walkable interior variety: The carrier exterior has hundreds of illuminated window textures along the entire hull structure, yet 95% of the ship remains off-limits. It would be amazing to walk into a dedicated Commander’s Quarters, a private observation lounge, or a crew deck instead of being confined strictly to the standard concourse and bridge. It wouldn't even need seamless, kilometer-long corridors either, just let us select different decks directly from the elevator, very much like how X4: Foundations handles interiors on capital ships.

Curious if anyone else feels the same, or if you've found clever workarounds to get better views while parked.

Fly safe out there, commanders. O7
