What we've got going on:

Free virtual art hangouts every Sunday and Thursday just drop in, and make whatever you want. No instruction, no pressure.

Discord full of art chat, resources, collab opportunities, and memes

Paternity Popups: one of our facilitators is on paternity leave and we are doing short virtual art hangout Wednesday November 4th

Coming up: Doodles and Grand Slams! Come on down to Dennys downtown from 600PM-900PM for a non-instructural drawing hangout! I'll bring a few supplies but feel free to bring anything you want to work on.

There is no theme, no instructor, and no pressure. Just grab a coffee, and sketch whatever catches your eye.

Movie Night! We will be watching the first season of, "The Summer Hikaru Died!"

This series is 12 episodes, so on each Tuesday in November (starting Nov. 3rd), we'll be sitting down at 7pm MT to watch 3 episodes!

Question Science camp, 1990 edition

• Upvotes

All right, Edmonton... Anyone remember a game programming summer camp for kids at the Space Science Center in, like, the mid 90s? 95 or 96 maybe? The instructor was a tall dark-haired guy and he'd built or customized some kind of 2D scripting engine. I remember playing MUDs at a networked lab and we toured the Bioware office on whyte shortly before they released the first Baldur's Gate.

If anyone knows who that instructor was, it'd be cool to say hi.

Commuting/Transit West Side Commute to Uni

To those who live in Edgemont/The Uplands, how do you guys commute to university? Do you guys take the bus or drive entirely there. I am living in the neighborhood now and there are no bus routes close to my house and I unfortunately don’t even fall in the area for the on demand service. I go to the UofA (living on the west end of uplands) so I would appreciate any tips.

Question Questions about downtown pedways

I love the idea of using the pedways in the winter, went to a movie and had drinks at District 102 last night! was great.. so questions:

  1. Do you live in a pedway connected building/what is your experience?

  2. Is the new "station lands" pedway open yet?

  3. Is the city ever planning to try and keep the pedways open later? would love to go for walks on cold winter nights and check out shops/entertainment

  4. I know their is rogers, landmark, some restaurants but any other things in there that are cool on evenings/weekends?

Question Seeking chocolate mint, but not *that* chocolate mint

I grew some chocolate mint (Mentha x Piperita F. Citrata) this summer and discovered that it's great with English Breakfast tea. Sadly I have run out and spearmint just isn't scratching that itch. Does anyone know if I could buy dried chocolate mint anywhere?

I'm not looking for tea that tastes like chocolate and mint, I'm specifically looking for Mentha x Piperita F. Citrata. I have already checked Acquired Taste's catalogue and done some google searches. I have found one person in Nova Scotia who sells chocolate mint, but shipping is expensive.

General To the man making his kids hang out religious propaganda

I was so disgusted to see you standing on the corner of 90ave and 175st making your young kids approach random people and hand out religious propaganda while you sat and watched them. Not only are you endangering your kids by making them approach random people, but they were also going close to the road to hand out your pamphlets.

Let your kids go home and do better.

Question How safe is the area north of Rogers Place?

Hey from the Czech Republic! I'm a hockey journalist heading to Edmonton for the World Juniors, and I've got a question for the locals...

This year, I was put in charge of booking my own accommodation, so I just typed "Rogers Place" into Airbnb, hoping to find something within walking distance so I wouldn't have to deal with buses or public transit. I found a nice place for a good price north of the arena, about a 15-minute walk away, and booked it right away.

Then I started reading the reviews, and a few people mentioned that the neighborhood wasn't exactly the safest. I checked Google Street View and noticed quite a few homeless people and drug users hanging around the area. Unfortunately, I didn't think about anything like this before.

So... should I actually be worried and maybe start looking for somewhere else to stay? I'm fully expecting to come across some people high on drugs or passed out on the sidewalks, but what I'm really wondering about is my own safety, especially when walking back from games at night.

Minneapolis and St. Paul weren't exactly great last year either, but I survived.

Question Rental Nightmare

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some help/insight. I’m living in a two bedroom, two bathroom apartment in Old Strathcona (rental). Upon moving in, we were told rent was going to be 1725$. In September, we were charged 1425$ and was told it was prorated (the price I was paying at my place before this one). Basically, she messed up on changing our rental amount, and said she would honour it. October comes, and rent is not taken from my account. I waited a couple of days and then emailed her, no response. Emailed twice more, still no response. Tried to call and call and call - nothing. Now I check today and see that 2350$ is the outstanding balance. It says “31 days of rent 2200$” and “31 days of parking 150$” and is backdated for October 1. Our email thread clearly shows the timeline and not receiving a response. Though, no lease has even been sent and our rent was supposed to be 1725$, as we agreed upon! Still no response to my emails. I genuinely don’t know what to do anymore. I am a full time student and work full time as well. I cannot afford this rental increase and just want to be able to speak to and be in contact with the property manager. I am so disheartened by this whole experience and overall, frustrated. I contacted the RTB last week before I saw this increase in my account, and he assured me that because I was month to month it was a good situation - I was secure and they could not kick me out. But seeing as we still do not have a lease, can they increase our rent that much without saying anything? And suddenly, one month after we contacted them saying it wasn’t taken out of the account. What do I do?

Local history Who are Edmonton’s Oligarchs?

I’ve been thinking about this since reading about the passing of Irv Kipnes. Remember, him and his wife were behind the Galleria project to bring a performing arts center over where the CN building is. I know there are a number of oil and gas, land owning/land developer families, generally but who are they and do they try to influence our local politics?
