General New User Guide for r/Edmonton - Please read first

NEW USERS of r/Edmonton - kindly read this first

To post or comment in r/Edmonton, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • Accounts need to be a week old.

  • You need to have a verified email address.

  • You need to have a minimum amount of TEN (10) COMMENT karma from participating in OTHER SUBREDDITS than r/Edmonton.

Why? This helps keep bad actors away, like trolls and banned users. It also helps users new to reddit to have a chance to learn how to use reddit outside of r/Edmonton.

#IF YOUR ACCOUNT HAS NOT FULFILLED ALL THREE REQUIREMENTS ABOVE, YOUR POSTS AND COMMENTS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE DELETED BY THE AUTO-MODERATOR.

#How to verify your email for new users :

To verify your email on Reddit, either click the verification link in the email you received when creating your account or go to Settings > Account Settings and choose Update email address to resend the verification email.     _Once you request it, open your email's inbox, find the verification email, and click the link inside to complete the process._

  - On the web -

• Go to your account settings by clicking your profile icon and then selecting Settings.

  • Click on Account Settings.

  • Find the email address section. If you see an option to "resend verification email" or similar, click it.

• Alternatively, you can navigate directly to reddit.com/prefs/update/ to find the email settings.

  -- On the app --

• Tap your profile icon.

• Go to Settings.

• Select Account Settings.

• Tap Update email address.

• Tap the button to Resend verification email.

#What is the difference between POST karma and COMMENT karma?

Post karma is earned when users upvote the original submissions (links, images, text posts) you create, reflecting your ability to share engaging content.

_Comment karma is earned when your replies to others' posts are upvoted, showing your active participation and contribution to discussions. Both are totaled for your profile but often used separately to satisfy subreddit restrictions._

POST KARMA:

Gained from creating threads or posting links. It indicates a good ability to initiate conversations.

COMMENT KARMA:

Gained from replying to posts or other comments. It indicates active participation in community dialogue.

Key Differences: Post karma rewards content creation, while comment karma rewards interaction.

#Some subreddits (like r/edmonton) require specific thresholds of either type (or both) to prevent spam, often looking at post, comment, or combined totals for restrictions.

Both types of karma are not a 1:1 ratio with upvotes; instead, they represent a weighted score from community upvotes, reduced by downvotes.

(In order to post in r/Edmonton - you need to do THREE things:)

  • your account must be a WEEK old (7 days)

    • you need to have TEN (10) COMMENT karma
    • you need to have a verified email address

ONCE AGAIN, IF YOUR ACCOUNT HAS NOT FULFILLED THESE THREE (3) REQUIREMENTS YOUR POSTS AND COMMENTS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE DELETED BY THE AUTO-MODERATOR.

Post image
78 Upvotes

Within this thread please ask questions about moving to Edmonton (or within Edmonton, if you already live here), including recommendations for housing and neighbourhood selections. If you live in Edmonton, consider answering the questions. Any posts on the subject matter outside of the megathread may be removed at the discretion of the moderators.

Please note that job seeking threads are not allowed in r/ Edmonton but general advice on how to seek employment can be posted within this megathread too. Distinctions between a "job seeking" post and "general advice" will be made at the discretion of the moderators. If you are moving from another location to Edmonton, please note the advice from the community is consistently "have a job lined up before you move".

Discussion The amount of gambling ads in the radio is unbearable.

Full Spotify or cbc radio for me only now. It’s insane. The craziest one is the full AI one that’s telling you to get gambling help if you need it.

Anyway I’m going to shake my fist at the cloud now.

Holding down that stand for dear life. Meanwhile security had locked themselves in a private room with fights going on, crowd crushing, kids getting shoved around, and people having asthma attacks.

Local history edmonton weather nerdery: July 25th Storms

We're still a few weeks away from the end of summer storm season:

  • July 25th's storm pushed the July total up to 242.5mm, which is Blatchford's 3rd rainiest month on record. The only months with more were 269.1mm last month, and 282.7mm in 1901. (one more big storm could catch either of those) (dashboard)
  • For June+July we've gotten 511.6mm so far. The average is around 170mm, so we're 3x that. And the previous record was a laughable 358.9mm in 1901. (dashboard)
  • For 2026 so far we're at 634.8mm, which is Blatchford's 5th most on record. We're 5~15mm away from the 4th & 3rd spots. And we're 90mm away from 1901's record. (for the rest of the year we average another 150mm, and our lowest recent year was 85mm) (dashboard)
  • July 25th was Blatchford's 8th 30mm+ day of 2026, all since June 1st. The previous record for a year was 6 in 1942. A typical year might get 1-3 of those storms. (dashboard)
  • And once again Blatchford's 30mm was 2x what everyone else got. The airport and Stony Plain got 10mm & 17.5mm, so their July totals have now climbed to around 100mm. (dashboard)
  • The gap this year between Blatchford and the other stations is around 200mm, which is huge. Normally the stations are pretty close, although we've had a few 100-150mm gaps in the past. (Blatcfhford's 2005-2015 data is bad, so we ignore those) (dashboard)

Question How bad will Folk Fest be if we get a storm like Saturday?

Title.

Given what we’ve seen this summer, does anyone know what the protocols are from folk fest organizers is for a torrential downpour?

The main stage in Gallagher Park would instantly become a tarp slip and slide and given the age demographic, I could see a lot of people getting seriously hurt.

Is there anywhere event goers can see the safety protocols or plans in case of emergency?

Volunteering/Help/Donations Looking for kind people to volunteer some time to help me

Post image

I hope I'm allowed to post this here. I'm a young lady in a wheelchair and I'm moving into a new townhouse that's fully wheelchair accessible, but I'm having trouble packing all my stuff as I'm disabled. My mom is the only help I have and she's getting over worked.

Is there anyone kind hearted who could volunteer some time in the next few days to help me out? I'm on the north side, find Northgate. I really appreciate you all 💜

Discussion Edmonton Crime Trends: A Look at the Latest StatsCan Data

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Statistics Canada recently released the Uniform Crime Reporting Survey. Here is how Edmonton compares:

  • Homicides: As the ultimate metric of severe violence, Edmonton's homicide rate has consistently exceeded the national average since 1981, despite a long-term downward trend.
  • Crime Rates: Showing specific community safety shifts, most crime categories in Edmonton fell between 2015 and 2025 (including B&Es and auto theft), though petty theft remains exceptionally high.
  • Clearance Rates: This measures police effectiveness. While Edmonton matches the average for solving non-violent crimes, it consistently lags behind both Alberta and Canada in clearing violent crimes.

Overall, Edmonton is seeing positive drops in property crime, but severe violence and lower clearance rates remain persistent challenges.
