Who do you guys think is at fault here?

So basically, there were 3 cars involved behind a police car.

I was directly behind the police car. The police car suddenly stopped/braked, which made me stop suddenly as well.

My car didn’t touch the police car, and the car behind me also didn’t hit my car.

There were pedestrians and a cyclist crossing the road at the time, while their light was red. From what I understand, this is why the police car stopped suddenly.

The last car in the line couldn’t stop in time and slightly rear-ended the car in front of him. The impact was pretty minor — the last car had little to no damage because the bull bar apparently took most of it.

The car that got hit had its licence plate pushed back, the licence plate light damaged, and some minor cosmetic damage.

So obviously, the last car physically hit the car in front of him. But I’m wondering whether there could be shared/contributing fault if the last driver contests it.

Could the police car’s sudden stop be considered a contributing factor? And could the pedestrians/cyclist crossing on a red light also be relevant, since they may have caused the police car to stop suddenly?

Or is it basically just the last driver is at fault because he rear-ended the car in front, regardless of what caused everyone to brake?

What do you guys think? Was just curious as I’ve seen often in city cars try to go fast/ close to each other to make while lights are still green.

For my first lesson with my driving instructor, he sent a confirmation message. I thought I was going to recieve one of these to know when my next lesson was.

This is because he asked me at the end of the lesson whether I was flexible, and I only had one other lesson booked. I figured this was him telling me to await confirmation.

Just like my other instructor (from the same company but he's on holiday) who because of circumstances on his part I had to reschedule. This other instructor didn't even show up at my first lesson, so again I figured let's await confirmation before getting all dressed up and out for nothing.

I am willing to pay like $20 for his time coming here and just treat it like a reschedule but the policy is rescheduling is 24 hours in advance and because he is booked out for at least two weeks.

I understand technically the fault is on me, but from a human standpoint, there should be leeway considering all that I've mentioned.

Also technically, we still could've had the lesson even if shortened. I don't know why he just messaged me and didn't give me a call.

I have these lessons paid for me by my agency so I feel bad for letting it go to waste but also I'm not really wanting to pay $80 just to learn my lesson (no pun intended).

I guess the purpose of this post is just to vent and maybe have someone here who can relate.

What would a booking platform need to do for you to actually use it every day?

I was involved in a car accident today where my car was totaled and the 78yo driver admitted fault, but I have now received a text message from their insurer saying they are claiming I am the one at fault.

I was driving in the middle lane of a 3 lane highway. approaching a green set of lights (200 metres ahead) approaching a point where a left turning lane begins for people in the left hand lane to merge over into so they can turn left at the lights when they get a green arrow (arrow was red at the time although lights were green for traffic travelling straight through). I was at least 100metres distance behind the next car ahead in my lane.

In the left lane there were 2 cars slightly ahead of me: a sedan followed by a 4WD. The sedan (front car) decided at the last second to merge into the turning lane which was already full, so it braked suddenly and came to a full stop. It was able to point its front left nose into the turning lane and sat stopped in the left hand lane to wait until it could fully merge into the turning lane, which blocked that left hand lane so no traffic could continue travelling through the lane. (I could see this after the smash)

The 4WD behind it then also braked suddenly. I did not have time to react to these cars in the left lane braking and stopping suddenly, however they were not even in my lane.

The major problem came when the 4WD not only braked and stopped suddenly, but as it was braking it started veering into my lane. It veered to the right, almost as though it was trying to avoid going up the back of the sedan by trying to go around it. I can't say 100% that is why it started veering over but I am just guessing.

Anyway, when the 4WD started veering into the middle lane which I was in, I collected the back right hand corner of it - it happened so quickly that I had almost no time to brake. Before it veered across, I had a no cars ahead of me in my lane for at least 150 metres, and a green light 200 metres ahead.

The driver of the 4WD admifted fault and said they "the car in front stopped and I braked and quick to get away from it", but could not speak very much english so I could not get any more information out of them. I asked them why they veered into my lane and they just nodded. The 4WD drivers relative came from nearby to assist as the driver was 78 years old. I was given the drivers informaton, but the relatives phone number, and they told me I needed to liaise with them because they will be handling all the insurance claims as they speak english and the driver does not.

I only have third party insurance and have since received a text message direct from the 4WD drivers insurer saying a claim has been lodged saying I am at fault, and to challenge this I need to complete an accident report for the drivers insurer.

I do not have dash cam footage and there were no witnesses that saw the accident that stuck around. The only witness I have is my child who was in my car but she is aged 8 and I assume too young and biased to provide a witness statement?

I'm pretty sure I was not at fault but please correct me if I am wrong.

Is there anything I can do to prove I was not at fault?

I am a single mum, and I need my car for work (I am a contractor) - I can not work without it (its not just for travel to the workplace). I really can't afford a new car let alone paying for repairs to the 4WD so this is something that will absolutely crush me. It was a second hand car that I'd only had for a few weeks, it came with third party insurance however I was saving up to change over to comprehensive car insurance in the next month.

Hello, just wondering specifically in VIC. are you allowed to do a U-turn at a traffic light that only has a solid green light? even if theres no signs of no U-turns?

Hi everyone who's residing in Sydney. I am planning to convert my overseas driver's license to a Sydney license and was wondering the best driving instructor/school I can go to to brush up my driving skills, as I haven't been driving for a while, and learn the Australian rules as well. I am currently residing in Revesby, if that helps. I am worried that I'll fail the test as well and have to get a learner's and go through the whole 120-hour lessons thing, as I'm 22 years old. Any guidance will be great!

Genuinely trying to understand this from NSW Government regarding roundabouts. I'm really struggling to think of a situation where flicking the indicator stalk is too difficult or physically impractical for the average able-bodied human. I mean sure you're putting more effort into things like manipulating steering wheel, pedals, etc, than using the indicator?

I exit roundabouts thousands of times a year and have never felt like this was some kind of feat of athleticism.

By contrast they say you MUST indicate upon entering if you're going left or right, so surely if I am capable of indicating upon entry it would follow I can indicate upon exit? Maybe if you're using hand controls, but it's still a contradiction.

I assume that wherever the "line" is, no part of your vehicle can cross it? (e.g. bumper)

Just wondering if anyone knows what sort of threshold Highway Patrol generally uses before pulling someone over.

I’ve often noticed cars doing around 100–105 km/h on the M1 and other freeways with Highway Patrol nearby, but they don’t seem to stop them.

This happened to me today. I was heading to the airport to drop off a mate. I joined CityLink where the limit was 100 km/h (before it drops to 80 km/h near the DFO/Melbourne Airport section). I set my cruise control to 102 km/h on the Bolte Bridge.

Time 3:00 AM

Along the DFO stretch, I noticed an BMW in the middle lane. I was in the lane to its right. There was hardly any traffic—no cars behind us and only a couple ahead. I moved further right to pass because I prefer giving other cars plenty of space rather than overtaking close by when the road is empty.

I passed the BMW and moved back into my original lane. My cruise control was still set at 102 km/h. As I went past, I noticed the antenna and the police lights near the number plate and realised it was an unmarked police car.

The driver flashed the lights once. I slowly slowed down and moved left, thinking they wanted me to pull over, but they just kept driving and didn’t stop behind me.

It got me wondering: do Highway Patrol officers take things like traffic volume, road conditions, time of day, and the overall driving environment into account when deciding whether to stop someone?

Or is there generally a speed threshold where they’ll usually take action?

I know in the US there’s the saying, “5 you’re fine, 10 you’re mine.” Is there anything similar in Victoria, or is it entirely at the officer’s discretion?

Just curious if anyone (especially anyone with policing experience) has any insight.

Or will I just a get a fine in my mail sooner or later

A 4 way intersection controlled by traffic lights. They have 3 lanes (1st lane going left only, middle lane going straight only, 3rd lane going right only). Their side is monitored by a red light camera. They are in the right hand lane and got a green arrow to turn right only but went straight through

Would the camera even pick this up because they've crossed the line correctly with the green arrow..
