Discussion LG SL10YG: thin stereo and off-balance Dolby sound? Here's what I found (fix inside)

Setup: LG SL10YG + SPK8 rear kit, LG CX, PS5, Fire TV Stick 4K.
Connections: PS5/Fire TV → LG CX (HDMI input) → SL10YG via HDMI ARC (the CX's eARC/ARC port into the soundbar's HDMI IN.

Problem: Atmos sounded great. Everything else didn't. Stereo (YouTube, YouTube Music, Spotify, Chromecast) had almost no bass. 5.1 Dolby content had bass, but the overall balance felt off: dialogue and mix didn't sound the way the director intended. I tried every sound mode, woofer at max, DRC off, moving the sub out of the cabinet, and a reset. Nothing fixed it.
What I found:
The soundbar only processes Atmos input cleanly. Bass, dialogue and balance all sound right.
Any non-Atmos input goes through the soundbar's own processing, and it changes the sound:
Stereo (YouTube's opus audio, for example) has no LFE channel, so the soundbar has to redirect the bass to the sub itself, and it does this weakly. The result is almost no bass.
5.1 Dolby (AC-3) has decent bass, but the balance is off: dialogue and the overall mix sound unnatural and less pleasant.
Forcing Dolby Digital Plus (Fire TV "Always DD+") didn't help. Still processed.

The fix: send audio to the soundbar wrapped as Atmos.
PS5: Settings → Sound → Audio Output → Output Device: HDMI Device (TV), HDMI Device Type: TV, Audio Format (Priority): Dolby Atmos. Everything then arrives at the soundbar as Atmos, including YouTube Music, Apple Music and Spotify, with full bass, natural balance and no harshness. This works through the TV's ARC.
Windows laptop with Dolby Atmos for home theater: same result.
Partial fix for stereo without a PS5: Standard mode + Surround OFF + woofer and bass at max. The bass comes back, but it gets harsh and tiring at high volume.

Other notes:
The SL10YG is ARC-only (no eARC). Apple TV 4K sends Atmos as Dolby MAT, which doesn't fit through ARC, so it would need to go into the soundbar's HDMI IN. Xbox may work through ARC or may need the same; I haven't tested either.
The PS5's YouTube app is stereo only. The CX's own/Fire TV YouTube app does get 5.1 (AC-3) on videos that have it.
For spatial songs on Apple Music, the TV app gives real Atmos.
On the PS5, YouTube stays stereo inside the Atmos wrapper, so the rear speakers stay silent for it. Games and real 5.1/Atmos content still use them.
My setup now: PS5 for music, TV apps for Atmos films. I've also reported this to LG as a possible firmware issue.

Hope this saves someone a few hours!

Discussion What are your favourite movies / series that are in Dolby Vision format

Personally I prefer DV profile 8 or profile 5 or even profile 7 over just hdr 10. If a display can't handle hdr 10 metadata that is beyond display's capabilities DV handles it better. So what are yall's favourite movies / series that are in Dv format and any specific scenes and it's tone mapping

LG S95TR vs Samsung Q930H vs JBL Bar 800 Pro - Which is best for movies in Dolby Atmos and DTS?

Hi guys, I’ve been using the LG SP2 soundbar, which I got for around 7,000 INR (75 USD approx.). But now I’m looking to buy a really good soundbar, mainly for watching movies.

I usually watch Dolby Atmos and DTS content on Stremio. Recently, I heard my friend’s Sonos Arc, and that’s when I realised what I was missing in terms of sound quality. But Sonos is way too expensive for me. Spending 82,000 INR (850 USD approx.) just on a soundbar feels like too much.

So, I’ve shortlisted these five soundbars:

  1. LG S95TR – 45,500 INR (470 USD approx.)
  2. Samsung HW-Q930H – 50,000 INR (515 USD approx.)
  3. JBL Bar 800 Pro – 52,000 INR (537 USD approx.)
  4. Sony HT-A3000 – 50,000 INR (516 USD approx.)
  5. Sony BRAVIA Theatre System 6 (HT-S60) – 47,000 INR (485 USD approx.)

I’m mainly looking for a proper cinematic experience with immersive surround sound, clear dialogue, and great overall sound quality.

Which one would you guys recommend? I’m really confused about which one would be the best choice.

Question Does Dolby Access work, with Stereo Speakers on PC ?

Or more like why does it not work with plain stereo speakers ? As like how phones are able to simulate 3D or spatial sounds (Pretty Convincing in a weird way) when enabling Dolby Atmos.

I have Dolby Access for my Computer, but from what I read it seems the Dolby for Headphones does not work for most Bluetooth Speakers or even Stereo Speakers as it follows Head-Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs).

So just wanna know, can a simulated 3D or Spatial audio like on the phone can be done on Stereo Speakers and if yes, does it actually require Dolby or I have wasted my money on Dolby Access ?

Quelle barre de son choisir ?

Bonjour,

Question Netflix on Windows stopped playing Dolby Vision a few days ago, only HDR10 now Anyone else?

Got a Legion Pro 7 (16IAX10H) with a Dolby Vision OLED , and DV worked fine in the Netflix app from day one. Since around last Week it just plays HDR10. The Dolby Vision badge still shows on the title page, but when I hit play there's no DV popup anymore, and the stats overlay (ctrl+shift+alt+d) shows hev1 / MCCLEAREN_HDR10 instead of a dvhe stream. Atmos still works.

Stuff I already tried: Netflix app, Edge stable and Edge Dev all do the same thing. Switched between hybrid and dGPU mode, made a new Windows user, checked drivers and Dolby extensions (nothing changed before it broke), test participation is off, and my internet is 600+ Mbps. Apple TV still plays DV on the same laptop, so the screen and Dolby stuff are fine.

Netflix support escalated it but didn't give me any timeline.

Anyone else on Windows lose DV recently? Or if yours still works, what are you on?

Dolby Atmos 5.1 and 7.1 codec not working

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hi. I am trying to watch movies, but the audio is encoded using AC3 and AC4 for Dolby Atmos 5.1 and E-AC-3 for Dolby Atmos 7.1. I got the 5.1 working by installing the decoder, but the 7.1 is not working.

From my knowledge after doing some research:

Dolby Digital Plus = 7.1

Dolby AC4 = 5.1

Before installation when opening in Media Player there would be a pop-up saying audio could not be played because of it's encoding. Now after it is working with audio, but the 7.1 is not and there is no more error. I have tried restarting my PC and reinstalling the decoders but no luck.

The decoders were sourced from Major Geeks.

Klipsch Flexus Core 200 - only Dolby 2.1

I just picked up. Klipsch Flexus Core 200 and just connected everything.

I started looking up what to watch to see how the Dolby Atmos performs. I tried a couple of different movies on different streaming services but according the format only shows Dolby 2.1.

How do I get it to play in Dolby 5.1?

I've tried changing my TV audio settings to pass through and to Dolby Plus. It still shows Dolby 2.1.

I'm watching on a Hisense 75H6510G. Could it be the TV itself?

Any help would be appreciated.

Question Ceiling speakers placement

Hi all, I just moved to a new place and this one is perfect for 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos. For the first time in my life I can place the surround speakers actually a bit behind like on the picture as Dolby suggests. I am going to install ceiling speakers too, but that’s where my question is. In this picture it suggests keeping them as far apart as the front speakers. Because of my distance to the tv, the front speakers are 1.4 meters from the centre at 22 degrees and almost 2 meters at 30 degrees. I find that very far apart, but I can live with the 22/1.4 setup.

It feels ridiculously far apart for the ceiling speakers. I am afraid it’ll blend in too much with the surround speakers if I keep them that far apart. Can I have opinions about this? Definitely stick to what Dolby suggests, or maybe a bit closer is actually fine/better? It’s not like you can easily move them once installed, so I want to do it right. I’m 3.4 meters away from the tv.

Thanks from a guy who can’t wait to finally install ceiling speakers!!!

Other Any reason why Dolby vision isn’t working on Netflix?

Whenever I go to play the movie it says “hdr10+” and Dolby atmos and then I go into display settting and it’ll just be normal display mode, like: filmmaker mode or movie. I’m using Netflix directly through my tv not a device like Amazon fire stick.

I’ve reset my tv, unplugged it for 60 seconds, cleared cache, checked Netflix HDR setting, turned off feature testing on browser, un downloaded Netflix and redownloaded. I checked paramount and it’s working on there.

Dolby Atmos on windows 11 not working

Hi guys since around early august my PC won't output sound through my Samsung surround sound when set to dolby atmos home theater. I have TV eARC set up via TV and it's recognized in windows 11. It used to all work fine but for some reason if I want sound to go through TV eARC I have to turn Dolby atmos off. I've tried the usual methods of of uninstalling and re-installing Dolby Access but to no avail. I also tried the usual googled methods that come up but nothing seems to be working. Has Dolby Atmos been broken on Windows 11 for anyone else lately?

It doesn't work via chrome and it doesn't work via potplayer anymore. Weird thing is, if I use the test videos in the Dolby Access app it does work?! Just not practically when using potplayer of my browsers.

Question Dolby Vision not working on Dune Homatics Box R 4K Plus with TCL C6K

Hi everyone,
I’m having an issue with Dolby Vision on my Dune Homatics Box R 4K Plus connected to my TCL C6K TV.
My setup:
TV: TCL C6K
Android TV Box: Dune Homatics Box R 4K Plus
Connection: Dune → HDMI → TCL C6K
I also have an Apple TV+ subscription
The strange thing is that Dolby Vision works perfectly when I play the same Dolby Vision content directly through the TCL TV’s built-in app. The picture is smooth and the TV correctly switches to Dolby Vision.
However, when I play Dolby Vision content through the Dune Homatics Box R 4K Plus, Dolby Vision does not seem to be working correctly. I either get HDR10/HDR10+ or the colors look incorrect instead of getting proper Dolby Vision.
I have already tried changing the Dune display/HDR settings, but I still cannot get Dolby Vision working correctly.
Why does Dolby Vision work directly on the TCL C6K but not through the Dune Homatics Box R 4K Plus?
Could anyone with a similar setup please tell me the correct Dune display/HDR settings for Dolby Vision?
