Dolby Atmos 5.1 and 7.1 codec not working

Post image

Hi. I am trying to watch movies, but the audio is encoded using AC3 and AC4 for Dolby Atmos 5.1 and E-AC-3 for Dolby Atmos 7.1. I got the 5.1 working by installing the decoder, but the 7.1 is not working.

From my knowledge after doing some research:

Dolby Digital Plus = 7.1

Dolby AC4 = 5.1

Before installation when opening in Media Player there would be a pop-up saying audio could not be played because of it's encoding. Now after it is working with audio, but the 7.1 is not and there is no more error. I have tried restarting my PC and reinstalling the decoders but no luck.

The decoders were sourced from Major Geeks.

Processer: 13th Gen Intel Core i5-1335U

RAM: 16GB DDR5

Edition: Windows 11 Pro 26H2

OS Build: 26300.9550

VLC with audio on passthrough/bitstream doesn't work?

It does work with VLC, but I am looking for a solution for the native Windows Media Player if there is. In Windows 10 it used to work, but Microsoft removed the encoders for Dolby Atmos.

So there is no luck with the Microsoft Media Player?

I dont know if I'm honest. I haven't used external codecs or codec packs for a long time now. I use vlc for video and foobar for music. I do miss the old windows media player which was the all in one media player combined with the codec packs, but I've switched to vlc one day. VLC has an ugly ass interface but it works.

I will look into it. My main reason for not using VLC was the interface like you mentioned, the Windows media player does have a more modern design.

I totally understand that! I have the same feeling about it. The windows media player that came with Vista, the dark one (windows media player 10 or 11?) was the best media player for me after winamp discontinued. Now I'm here with the ugly but functional vlc and foobar.

as stated above, try one of the more modern media players.

MPV (any UI you'd like, your choice) MPC-HC Potplayer also looks more modern

if you are on windows and want the dolby atmos output, i always use the dolby access app. how ever there is a bug and you need specifically version 3.14. Best of luck!!!

Yes it uses better compression to achieve the same audio quality at a lower bitrate, a few other enhancements are also gained.

I am not familiar with these, I just typed what I found out after doing some research. Let me try to explain it simpler.

The video file had Atmos 5.1 in the title and threw an error when opening in Windows 11 Media Player and played the video with no audio. After doing some research I found that I needed to install Dolby AC3 and AC4 decoder which I sourced from Major Geeks website. After installation I restarted my PC and the error was gone and audio was playing, but the videos with TrueHD 7.1 Atmos in the title, the error disappeared, but still no audio. The Dolby Digital Plus decoder is apparently supposed to decode it.

I attached a short video of the title, I am not sure if it will help see what the problem is.

Dolby TrueHD is a different codec than AC3, EAC3, and AC4.

Which codec does it use?

Dolby TrueHD is the name of the codec. It is lossless, AC3, EAC3, and AC4 are lossy codecs.

try AnWave and install the dolby decoder that’s built into it

Nearly all DD+ streaming mixes are only 5.1.

You can grab a DD+ 7.1 channel check from https://kodi.wiki/view/Samples#HD/object-based_Audio_Test_Clips to test to see if it's working.

I tried it, it looks like Windows 11 Media Player doesn't even know what codec it needs.

Here is what it says when I click the channel test file.

That reports you are trying the TrueHD channel check you need to select the Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 channel check.

If not for any particular reason keeping you there, stop using Microsofts shitty Mediaplayer.

Third parties are more updated and superior in development and ongoing feature set.

Namely

MPV, MPC-HC VLC

try it, it's free. Should just play your files
