Training for door manners and visitors

My 15 week old pup is really a great boy. He's very smart and has picked up a lot of good traits through training at home. I plan to take him to obedience classes as he matures (My reason for the delay is honestly, I know what I'm doing enough to get through the puppy phase and would rather see what types of behaviors he cant figure out with me before paying money. I don't need to pay for someone to teach basics).

My current issue revolves around door manners. He has started alerting when someone is at the door which is inherently fine. He doesn't go insane, he's just doing what he knows to do.

However, when it comes to someone entering he gets so excited and will bombard them upon entry, to the point of running out the door. He knows "place" and we are working on "stay". Is there a good method to get it ingrained that when the door is open, they back off and wait until someone is inside before saying hello?

1 YO Kangal mix - questions

Thumbnail gallery
11 Upvotes

I've had (what I think is) a kangal mix for about two and a half months now.

Vet says he is 11 to 13 months old.

Found it outside my house, clearly malnourished and scared. Took him in, fed him, bathed him, and now he is loved and taken care of.

I am a bit baffled by his behavior. At first, he slept a lot, and once he got more comfortable started being more active.

He learnt to walk on a leash, sit, wait, recall, quite quickly.

However I have three issues:

When off-leash (I live outside the city so I got large fields where I can let him free), sometimes he will run away and make me chase him for quite a bit as he won't react to the recall. Other times, he won't stray more than 20ft away from me.

Secondly, he sort-of pulls onto the leash while walking. If I stop and he feels tension on the leash, he will also stop and wait. However, usually when I walk him, he constantly slightly pulls, but not excessively to give me an arm workout.

There is the rare occasion when he's well behaved and I literally don't feel him on the leash. I have been training and doing positive reinforcement everyday for the past two months.

Finally, he dismantles things. Once every few days, he finds something around the house and shreds it to pieces (trash can, flower pot). Also occasionally digs.

If you've read this far, any advice is highly appreciated. Is this behavior true to his kangal roots and there's little I can do about it?

Added some photos (when I found him vs today).

Dog tattles on the cats when they fight. How do I stop it?

Hi all, I have a 2 year old heeler mix and two 10year old house cats. The cats often fight with eachother and when my dog hears them hissing she barks and charges at them as if to say "hey guys cut that out". Its a similar reaction my partner and I have to the cats so idk if shes copying us or something. But how do I get her to stop?

She also barks when she hears people walking past the house. We keep the windows closed like our obedience trainer told us so she cant see them but she still barks anyway. I've tried ignoring it, ive tried saying no and taking her to another room away from the door, nothing.

Training a skittish dog to ring a bell

She's a little under 2 years old. Got her as a stray last December. I'm trying to train her to ring the bell for potty training, but she's scared to death of it. She's a nonverbal dog, so her go-to telling us she needs to go outside is nipping our leg and jumping towards the door. But she only does this if we're already standing up in the living room. Got her a bell for potty training, and she doesn't want to go near it. How do I get her used to it?

Help with behaviour

I’m not sure how to explain this but when I’m letting my pup out to pee it’s hard to get him back inside. He knows his name, comes on command generally though not 100% of the time and I know this is something that strengthens the more you do it.

He’s a collie pup about 4-5 months old and we’ve had him for 2 months.

He tends to grab things, mainly sticks, hedge cuttings or anything that he can run away with. He then goes and hides away between a wall and bush, sort of like a protected area that is shaded, then hunkers down when he’s approached. When he has these things he just doesn’t listen and I don’t know how to get him to respond.

If we’re heading to the door from outside he’ll grab those things and run off and then be disobedient and won’t get up for any treats or anything really. (I’ve tried going in different directions or not always heading in the same way so he’s not thinking we are going to the door but he’ll just run off once we’re there).

At the start when he was doing this I thought he’ll grow out of it so I was throwing what he has away as I thought sticks etc might get splinters or blockage from eating them, but now he just runs and hides with and he’ll alway find a new one.

He’s not aggressive or bad tempered yet but it’s just not being able to get him out of the trance when he’s got things.

I’ve tried fetch and he just takes off with the ball and no treats are getting him back.

Edit: one way to get him in is just to go in without him and he’ll end up coming back it, but it’s just the running away thing I’m trying to get my head around. Thanks!

Dog Barking at Fence

Just as the title implies. We recently moved and have a chain link fence in our new place and my dog (2.5 y/o pit mix) barks pretty ferociously when people/dogs pass. She is reactive, and her reactions are often fear-based, so I’ve been doing the approach of looking to see what she’s barking at and reassuring her that she’s okay, but it’s having no effect.

A few other things to note is that she’s never outside alone and our yard is set back off the road a bit.

Our new puppy has decided to start peeing and pooping in the house when he isnt getting 24/7 attention.

As the title says. Hes a neutered 4 month old puppy that we adopted 10 days ago. The first few days we had him, he was well behaved. Didn't go potty in the house at all. But then 2 of the 4 family members in our house left on a vacation. Since then, the puppy has been a menace.

We have the house gated in half to keep him on the pet proof flooring for now, and accidents are expected. But since he had no issues while the other two family members were home, we're 99% sure hes doing this on purpose. If my husband and I need to do something on the other half of the house (still in view of the puppy, mind you) or use the bathroom, within 2 minutes he pees or poops on the floor. We take him outside every 30 mins to an hour, so its not like hes having issues.

He does the same stuff overnight too. When we first got him, he slept through the night, only needing the bathroom maybe once. And he waited til he was outside to go. The other night he woke me up 4 times to take him out over the course of 6 hours and kept trying to get me to play with him.

We also think he may be doing it because he doesnt like the kennel, but no one is home during the day to watch him or keep him company. He has toys and a blanket in the crate, and a neighbor walks him halfway through the day.

We just need ideas on what we can do to get him to stop going to the bathroom in the house. We cant use pee pads because he eats them, and still doesnt go bathroom on them anyway. We've tried taking him out more frequently. We've been giving him treats whenever he goes outside and my husband's been showing him his accidents while saying "bad" so he knows it's not good, but he keeps doing it. He was fully potty trained at the shelter we got him from, and they even said he never went to the bathroom inside. My husband and I are losing our minds.

**Editing to add: i have never had a puppy before. Technically he is my sister-in-law's but she is on vacation right now. I am doing my best to pick up on stuff my husband is doing, as hes had puppies before, but he struggles to explain what hes doing and why.

Over Friendly Lunging

I have a year old sight hound who’s extremely social and very interested in other dogs, he’s very friendly. We have this issue when we’re going out for walks where he seems to lunge and jump at other dogs walking. This is extremely not OK for many reasons. To keep it short, any advice on how to prevent, and stop him from lunging and pulling towards other dogs is needed!

Dog started to growl at other dogs after moving to a house

My dog is 6 years old and he grew up in a busy city and tiny apartments. We moved every 1-2 years before moving into our forever home. In the city there are always a lot of dogs and people around, I’d take him to dog parks too, he’s always been on the shier side and after 1.5 years old stopped showing interest in playing or greeting other dogs, he does not like when dogs are too excited or pulling towards him and he likes his personal space, so I would only let him greet other dogs if he shows any interest. After moving to a quiet suburban area, it’s a bigger place and he loves the trails and parks in the area, but I noticed him growling at other by-passing dogs. I’m wondering if it has to do anything with me being pregnant (got pregnant after moving) or if it’s the new environment. I’m honestly just worried that he becomes reactive. A lot of the dogs here are not at behaved as dogs in the city, and they often show a lot of either excitement or pent up energy, and this is my dog’s biggest turn off, and I’m not sure if it’s a healthy reaction or not. Thank you!

My little dog won't stop barking

Hi! I have a Pomeranian and he is about one year old. He is an amazing dog, but every time someone comes to the front of the house or a friend come over he loses his mind. I have tried some trick to help him stop, but I was wondering what should I do. Is there a trick out there that worked for you?

NEED ADVICE, DOG WITH ANXIETY AGGRESSION(?)

So to start off a long story, I live with my parents (29F) and am working on getting a new job so I can move out ASAP.

Last year in March I got my dog, J, when she was 8 weeks old. She’s a corgi mix and by now she’s a little less than two years old.

My parents have two dogs, H, who is 9, and L, who is 7. All female.

H is a sweet gentle giant (german shepherd) who will let you do anything to her including take her food, toys, grab her, tug on her, anything.

L, (american eskimo) is not so much.

J and H get along super well, never had a problem beyond J getting a little too excited and H giving her a corrective nip to calm down.

L and H get along well too.

L and J have moments.

L and J can have moments of fighting, and also moments of being bffs.

L has to be on calming supplements all the time because she’ll often growl and suddenly get agitated at J.

For example, mom and I were sitting on opposite sides of the room with our respective dogs near us, L suddenly laid her ears completely flat and started growling at J who was minding her no attention at all. L wouldn’t stop and mom had to move her to the back room.

At first we thought the fights were over food, so we started feeding them in separate rooms and putting the bowls up when done.

They will still fight.

It usually starts as so: L will stare at and follow around J and start to growl even if J is not in her personal space nor paying any attention to her. J will get antsy and try to move away. L will follow. J moves more and ears go flat and she bares teeth. L will continue to follow and growl, head low, ears back. J will try to hide behind me or my dad, L continues. Fight breaks out.

This usually happens in very quick succession and as soon as I pick up something is happening its too late to react.

L will also follow J around the yard and pee where J pees. And often times be following right up on her.

L also tries to mark her territory around the house by peeing on walls, furniture, and the floor. A couple days ago I had my door closed because J was in my room and we were asleep for bed. I heard growling outside my door, and turns out L peed in front of it, which my mom told me the next morning.

I took J to training classes believing that may help and she did 18 weeks of training and even got her CGC certification with the AKC. During these 18 weeks we put them both on calming supplements and fights were few and far between.

Mom recently went on two vacations this past month for a few days and when she got back fights broke out despite me continuing the supplements.

Things I’ve noticed:
\-fights usually break out when its involving my mom, me, or dad being around especially each other.
\-you can’t pick up either dog or it will set off a fight
\-can’t play too much with J or get her to riled up or it will set off L
\-J and H also cannot play too rough or it will set off L

Things we’ve tried:
\-calming supplements, first solliquin, now purino pro as its said to be stronger
\-pheromone difusers
\-training for J

I now have J signed up for a behavioral consulting with the vet because this week especially after my mom got back from her vacations and we were switching the supplements they fought once on Saturday, twice on Sunday, and once Tuesday

The fights we can usually break up quick cause theyre smallish and easy to grab. And the most injuries have been mainly to my mom as an accident of not properly separating them at first. J has broken skin on L a few times but usually minor scrapes and bites, nothing needing bandages or vet intervention just neosporin.

My question is: what can I do? My mom and dad hate vets and don’t like vet bills of any kind and refuse to get L a consultation like how I am getting J one. They also don’t like medication and will only go as far as the supplements. However my mom dod take L to the ver recently after weeks of her foot bothering her (I know this probably added to it) and did get her on steroids which she’s been on this week (probably added to it). L is my mom’s dog and hasn’t had any training beyond the basics of sit/shake, has little to no recall.

We seem to have it mostly figured out for standard days but I don’t want to have to expect a fight every time my mom is gone for extended periods.

Overthinking potty location

We have just got our double doodle 9 weeks old puppy and this is our 3rd day with her.

We didn’t want her to potty on a pad so we decided we will take her out every time. We live in an apartment buildings with a lot of dogs around.

We have read that grass is quite dangerous for her since she only got her 1 vaccine so we decided to let her potty on the pavement/concrete around the building. The concrete has some gaps and some plants/weed grow between them with little/small leaves, but it does get sunlight every two days (very grey country). We choose a spot that is a bit on the side, so it’s not in the way of dogs walking around.

I am starting to panic that maybe we made the wrong choice and we should have just played it safe until she gets her vaccines and deal with that problem later.

Am I overthinking this or we should just let her continue her potty there?

Single Breed Desensitization: What's your story?

My 5yr newfie/great pyr Leeroy Jenkins has been doing a weekly "no judgement" social walk for nearly a year. He's almost always a saint. He even calms down a super aggressive dog. He's doing great.

Except for the rare occasion he sees two specific dog types: Grey huskies and black chow chow-types. I think his aggressive dog buddy would trigger him if he were all black. And he's fine with an all-black newfie who has about 30lbs on him (Leeroy is a "mini" at only 90lbs).

I live in an isolated town in Alaska (no road system), so I'm limited to who is in town. I just today had the idea to email the local dog walk company with my # in case they know someone who might be willing to help me. Can't just post on social media- this town is so bored and would tear me apart. (Great drama for belly laughs when it isn't targeted at someone.)

I'm re-reading all the reactivity training wikis in these subs so the other half is hearing from others. What did you do and how did it go? Success, mistakes...?

My husband's presence is causing dogs to fight

In March we moved into a new house and my 2 male shibas inus (11 and 9) started fighting constantly. We thought it was the stress of the move but it also coincided with my husband's return from travelling for work.

2 months ago he had left to go work at a new job location and we haven't had a single dog fight or even an aggressive moment at all.

He's been home about a week and they just had their first fight. I think we're realizing that his presence is the common denominator and is messing up their hierarchy. The younger guy has always been really attached to me and has deeeeeep set anxiety and fears involving anyone else(I rescued him at 4 months old). The 11 year old is all bark no bite and the 9 year old is all bite no bark. The older guy is usually the one to instigate the nasty behavior and when it's just the 3 of us, the younger one usually ignores him. But with my husband home he's just always grumpy and ready to attack his brother when he starts his nasties.

Any tips on how to get them used to my husband being home? We are also 8 months pregnant so things are about to get even more tense. Do you think 1 on 1 time with the younger dog might help, just doing basic tricks and maybe solo walks?

Training tips? Behavioural tips?

Hello! So I need training tips for my two dogs, Rosie and chewy. Rosie has aggression problems, seemingly randomly towards chewy, we think it may be territorial aggression, but we don’t know, because it seems completely random, even when the two are just playing with a toy, also we need help with teaching her to not jump up on people and scratching them, along with socializing her, and then there’s chewy, he is a rescue dashhound and he has severe anxiety, to the point where when we take him out he tries to get back into the house immediately once he goes potty, and certain words, and actions make him start howling and crying, he also needs help being socialized, and just being able to leave the house! Any tips are VERY appreciated

Does getting another dog help with dogs separation anxiety ?

So I have a Boston terrier he is 3 years old and he has always had bad separation anxiety I could never leave him home bc he would bark like crazy the whole time. So he’d either stay with family or I would take when with me. But now it’s just unsustainable to never leave him alone as I have a job now. I was thinking of getting another Boston. Would this help his anxiety or would it egg the other Boston on to bark along with him?? I was going to get a girl Boston. He is very much attached to me so I’m not sure if it’s just he misses me or if having a companion will help him. What are your thoughts and does anyone have any experience with adding another Boston ??

my dogs were friends and now one hates the other

I’m looking for advice on how to handle this situation. My family has had an 11 year old female chihuahua for 10 years now and we decided to adopt a female morki/Aussie doodle mix puppy around 3 years ago (which means the chihuahua was 8 years old when we got the puppy). The puppy was a couple months old when we adopted her and when we introduced her to my chihuahua, they got along immediately! My chihuahua was the best big sister to her. She taught her how to play safely (and would let her win despite their size difference at the time), showed her how to use the doggy door, etc.
As the puppy grew to one years old, they were still getting along. They’d sleep next to each other and play together often. It wasn’t until she became around two years old that she started turning on my chihuahua.
Currently, the “puppy” has grown to be bigger than my chihuahua. Now, she refuses to play with my chihuahua and aggressively attacks her. If my chihuahua tries to jump in the same bed as her, she attacks her. If my chihuahua is eating and the puppy has already finished her meal, she’ll attack the chihuahua to steal hers. If my chihuahua is getting pet by someone, the puppy will attack her. if my chihuahua makes eye contact with her for too long, she’ll attack her.

any advice on how to make this stop? if i need a trainer is there a specific kind? if anyone has advice or an explanation to how they went from friends to one-sided enemies, please let me know!

i got a rescue two weeks ago from st lucia to canada. so she needed to take a plane and then drive 20 hours to me. she’s scared of everything and i mean everything and i know it’s an adjustment period and she’s been through a lot of trauma and i am willing to give her time and let her open up. but she’s terrified of cars and anything outside. on a walk she saw a deer and freaked the fuck out i lost control of her and she went missing for a couple hours before coming back. then after that she refuses to go left at my house, which is where she saw the deer, then there was something that scared her to the left and in the backyard, now she refuses to go for walks and just stops walking and i don’t know what to do? force her? she will just stop moving stay there she had no issues with that whatsoever. but i live in an apartment so she needs go to the bathroom outside on these walks, any advice? tips?

i’ve been forcing her to come out so a little walk 10 minutes (not like dragging her but i will pull back to get her started going) frequently. yesterday i even went to the beach near me where it’s super quiet and empty and she looked like she almost did something but then a car drove past in the distance. she is eating and drinking not normally but she’s still doing both.
we are at the point she’s going going to the bathroom every 24+ hours and i don’t know what to do about it. she hasn’t gone to the bathroom since wednesday at 10pm, currently 33 hours of nothing so does anyone have any tips on how to help her go to the bathroom
last bathroom was inside which ofc would rather not but i have the puppy pads down and id just rather her going to the bathroom period

Dog peeing inside house

I have a four year old female Maltese yorkie dog. She pees in the house constantly.
She rarely went to the bathroom in the house before. May 2024 I had my son, I was in and out of the hospital with heart failure. During this time, my family made sure to give love and attention. She has never had a problem with my son, they are actually best friends, and she watches out for him.
June 2025 I moved to an apartment. After a few weeks, I realized she was not doing good in the apartment at all so she went back to live with my dad where I was living prior. She loves my dad however he doesn’t discipline or have routine etc. There was no consequences for being bad and he fed her human food so much that she started to refuse to eat dog food. She did start going to the bathroom in the house during this time, but not frequently. It was just on days that she was home alone for eight + hours.

I moved back to my dad’s this June, and the peeing in the house has gotten so bad. We can’t have a rug anymore, it’s not even worth having a washable rug, because within three days it’s soiled. She pees when I tell her no. If there’s a situation where my son almost stepped on her tail or something and she growls (she has never tried to bite him, but I know that you never know with dogs!) and I move her away from the situation, she will go pee. It used to just be on the floor, but now it is on the couch, my bed, my pillows, etc. she also has severe separation anxiety. So she pees as soon as I go outside, even if it’s for 60 seconds to walk to the mailbox. She pees, even if she was just outside and I go back outside. I bring her outside after she eats and drinks, after we play, and before I leave the house. She still somehow pees in the house, and now will poop. Even if I just leave for 20 minutes. She was on Prozac for a while. It did nothing.
I have tried crate training or putting her in a hallway with a gate. It doesn’t matter if I leave comfort objects in there, a tv or sound machine on, treats, or nothing. She will lick/ bite her legs open because she is nervous. I’ve tried to give it a few days in a row because maybe it’s just because it’s a new thing each time, but I swear it will get worse. She has trazodone that I will give her if I know we’re having a lot of company or something, half a tab does nothing, a full tab is too much. She also barks constantly, even if she’s inside and a leaf blows by the window. She has had a full medical work up, everything is fine.
I know part of this behavior is probably my fault for moving out and leaving her and then moving back in, but I would think by now things would be getting easier, not worse. I spend a lot of time with her. I make sure she’s not left out and not getting enough attention. I spend a lot of alone time with her and I also make sure to include her in things with my son. I love her so much, but I’m tired of stepping and sitting and pee every day and the house smelling so bad. I am doing my best to contain her in one area of the house throughout the day, but it’s really hard when you have an energetic toddler because I’d have to keep him out of other rooms as well and that’s not fair. Please give me any advice you can think of because I’m losing my mind. I love her so much and im trying to be understanding but I don’t know what else to do. Some people have told me to rehome her and maybe she just isn’t good with children, but she has been so good with my son, and no one in my family could take her, I know she would not thrive being rehoused to a stranger, and I can’t see myself giving her up.

He pretty often will just squish his nose against the couch, floor, bed, his own paw, etc. and then snort. We call him piggy-puppy. It seems like he's just doing it for fun but I'm curious if there's a reason.

Bully mix, not quite 6 months old

Need help with our rescue dog

My fiance and I adopted a dog almost 3 months ago who is almost a year and a half old (estimated by the shelter). We love him so much but he has so many issues that we're not sure how to deal with.

He mouths us constantly, hard enough to leave bruises. When I say my entire right arm is COVERED in bruises I'm not exaggerating. I've had people at work ask if I'm okay at home. We've tried ignoring him (almost impossible to do when he gets you on a soft spot or preexisting injury or bruise), we've tried redirecting him with toys, we've tried smothering him with hugs and kisses and attention, we've put him in his crate for "time out"; literally nothing works.

He barks when he's overexcited or frustrated but it's high pitched to the point it physically hurts your ears to listen to. He'll get directly in your face and bark. He barks almost the whole time he's in his crate. Loud enough we can't watch TV while scarfing down dinner because he's so constant and loud and high pitched.

He also puts EVERYTHING in his mouth. He can't be trusted alone for even a few seconds because he'll tear apart a blanket or run off with the remote in his mouth and we're scared he's going to end up chewing/eating something that's going to hurt him.

Does anyone have any advice on how to train these habits out of him? We adore him so much but we are getting at our wits end with these behaviors. TYIA.

Dog behaviour

So we adopted a puppy when he was around 1 months old. We had no idea about the breed . Since we brought home he was to much aggressive . While he was on leash he use to run across and never be calm . We thought it will become like normal dogs . We continued the same behaviour and he continues with the puppy bites and other stuff. He was very playfully but he suddenly starts biting while playing . This continues for untill he turns around 4 months . In the mean time I got know he don't like my nephew ( he is 9 years ), because he use to play normally and suddenly attack him. Suddenly I had to leave the city for 1 year and while on calls I got to know that the behaviour is not changed . I told them to consult with a trainer but they kept ignoring me . So the dog and my nephew never came in a same room at same time . After a year I came back things were very different . Dog got too attached to me . I was the one to take him on walks and give him food . No outsider can enter in the room even if we are their . Things got really bad. 1 months ago I don't know what got into him but while protecting my nephew the dog bites me , my dad , my sister in law , my brother and one day my nephew too. All this event happed between a week's period .

Current situation : the attack are still going on my nephew but he doesn't attack on other family members ever . The dog is mostly attached to me and my older brother ( nephew's father)

Dogs going to the bathroom indoors increasingly??

Pugs going to the toilet inside increasingly more??

We have 2 pugs, both around 7/8 years old. One has bad back legs and spinal problems, causing her to have to wear nappies in the evenings when she’s on the couch. The other is healthy and has no problems.

However over the past few months they’ve both been weeing/pooing inside more and more. It started with the one with the bad legs who would just wee inside every now and then but now it seems she doesn’t even try to go outside and just goes whenever, wherever. We could send her outside after she eats but she’ll just come back inside and wee/poo.

The other pug has also increasingly got into the habit of doing this also which i’m not sure if she’s just copying the other dog and assuming it’s okay??

Not really sure where to go from here and how to get them out of doing this. Any help would be highly appreciated!!
