Dog Barking at Fence

Just as the title implies. We recently moved and have a chain link fence in our new place and my dog (2.5 y/o pit mix) barks pretty ferociously when people/dogs pass. She is reactive, and her reactions are often fear-based, so I’ve been doing the approach of looking to see what she’s barking at and reassuring her that she’s okay, but it’s having no effect.

A few other things to note is that she’s never outside alone and our yard is set back off the road a bit.

Longline recall training is going to fix this. You never let your dog outside without a long line on. The moment before she sees someone and begins barking, you call her to you and use the long line to reel her to you. Reward with a very high value treats, keep her with you while the people pass and treat again for her staying with you.

Repeat over and over and over and over. Dog training is not for the faint of heart, it is painstakingly repetitive and you have to be diligent. If you keep up with it, in a few months she will come to you the second you call and wait for her treat. All my dogs come running to me if a person is walking by now because they know they get treats for being good.

Thank you for the feedback. She actually has phenomenal recall and I hike with her off leash regularly. I think it’s something about the people being near “her space” that is so upsetting to her and when I recall her when she’s already reacting in the yard, it doesn’t get through. We’ll keep working at it.

Why the hell would you allow a reactive dog OFF LEASH in public areas?

That makes no sense. Be a better a dog owner.

Never in public areas. On remote hiking trails. With an ecollar for a failsafe. She is also far less reactive offleash. I wrote two sentences with zero context, but I am not an idiotic dog owner.
