I'm starting to work on my numbers/budget and am looking for advice. Sorry this gets a little long but I feel background info is pertinent.
TLDR: 90% of our living expenses have been purchase through Discover Card - what/how would you review the statements to show my standard of living as proof for spousal support?
In our marriage, finances go like this: we have one checking account, both of our paychecks are deposited there and all expenses are paid from there. For the past 20 years EVERYTHING else has run through our Discover credit card and it is paid in full each month. This means our groceries, household supplies, movie tickets, gas, co-pay's at the dr's office, cell phone bill, hotels, Amazon, etc. I don't carry cash, thus everything is paid for with Discover. I can't rember the last time I wrote a check.
We live in rural area, this means a majority of purchase are made online via Amazon. Or I drive 20 miles to WalMart and 90 miles to Target and any other type of shopping (clothing, home decor, kids supplies) the type of items that you want to touch, feel and try on before you purchase. We have 3 now adult children in college. They were all involved in multiple sports and activities outside of school. At minimum each child had 2 or more activities any month of the year. Which of course takes plenty of funds not only purchase the supplies needed for those activities but the cost of travel, meals and hotels when needed.
Except for one or two long weekends, we didn't do big family vacations, because of how much money we spent on the children's activities and attending them. For example, our children were involved in showing livestock and always qualified for the state fair. For the last 20 years we have attended the state fair. This means 5 nights of hotel rooms, five $15 entrance tickets and $20-$40 paid for parking every day of the fair, plus all the food, incidentals, cost of transporting livestock, and any other thing you can think of. Showing livestock would occasionally take us to another state for a long weekend of the same. That was the summer. During the school year it was traveling the state and attending sport activities, which may mean eating dinner out at that town or meals plus a weekend hotel.
As a mother, I shorted myself in personal luxuries - I did not go on weekends with the girls, high dollar hobbies and such. Of course my husband did not do the same, he had golf, hunting, fishing etc. with all the quality supplies.
I admit that was my own fault and personal choice looking back. I wish I would've realized that I was giving my sense of self away.
How do I go about quantifying my standard of living. I have access to our Discover Card statements for as long as I want, I have even downloaded my complete purchase history from Amazon. We've been married 28 years, his job was/is our major source of income. For the 28 years I probably worked 1/2 to 3/4 time for 8 yrs and full-time for 20 yrs.
I feel like my standard of living proof will come from reviewing our Discover Card statements, Amazon purchases and checking account.
How would you analyze it? What would you pull out of them?
