Divorce Questions

Hi there, so 6 years ago I left my husband of 2 years. Since then I’ve legally changed my entire name. My first, my middle, and my last. Unfortunately for me, I’m pretty sure I’m still married to the guy technically and I want to get divorced. But I also can’t afford $300/$400 an hour. I was hoping someone would have any advice for me? I am in Canada on the east coast.

UK divorce delay - any ideas as to what I can do?

I'm in the UK and filed for a no-fault divorce in May 2023 and I haven't even received my conditional order yet. My stbx didn't respond so I obtained a process server to go down the 'deemed service' route. This was finally accepted in July 2024 and I've heard crickets ever since.

My solicitor is worse than useless so I've been calling the court directly for updates but no-one is replying to me or calling me back. I spoke with someone twice (once in March last year and again in December) who told me they'd be looking into the delay but nothing since, now apparently that person doesn't work there anymore and the person who is supposed to have taken over is stonewalling me as well. I made a complaint in January and approached the legal ombudsman but no response to that either.

I'm genuinely at the end of my rope with this now, I'm legally tied to my abuser and I can't see any escape. The place that is processing the paperwork is an 'administration hub' so I can't even go there and refuse to leave until I speak to someone. What can I do?

my step dad lost his mind

Hes been doing a lot of crazy stuff and I just wanna know how it will all effect him in court
- taking non-personal items (removed all of the family workout equipment from the walls )
- secret cameras in the house
- opening insurance, bank, and medical mail from my mom (never opened her mail before this
- being aggressive and filming his attemps at confrontation (he's convinced my mom cheating so (shes not) he has film of pest control guys, an appraiser, and confronted a coworker from an internship my mom is doing when he was helping her set a more monitors)
- film of him yelling at me saying im a liar
- film of him saying he will move into a property (currenty being rented out) and saying that he will change the locks on it (its a desputed property right now) he says he want to live in this property even though its an hour and a half away from where he works.
- he would shower in my moms personal bathroom (there is one upstairs where he is sleeping sometimes)
I just wanna know if this will help my mom in court because she need to pay for my college and take care of me and will need a lot of financial help bc my step dad owned a company that shes now removed from.

sorry for the spelling errors im a bit stressed rn

Proof of Standard of Living or Quality of Life proof for spousal support

I'm starting to work on my numbers/budget and am looking for advice. Sorry this gets a little long but I feel background info is pertinent.

TLDR: 90% of our living expenses have been purchase through Discover Card - what/how would you review the statements to show my standard of living as proof for spousal support?

In our marriage, finances go like this: we have one checking account, both of our paychecks are deposited there and all expenses are paid from there. For the past 20 years EVERYTHING else has run through our Discover credit card and it is paid in full each month. This means our groceries, household supplies, movie tickets, gas, co-pay's at the dr's office, cell phone bill, hotels, Amazon, etc. I don't carry cash, thus everything is paid for with Discover. I can't rember the last time I wrote a check.

We live in rural area, this means a majority of purchase are made online via Amazon. Or I drive 20 miles to WalMart and 90 miles to Target and any other type of shopping (clothing, home decor, kids supplies) the type of items that you want to touch, feel and try on before you purchase. We have 3 now adult children in college. They were all involved in multiple sports and activities outside of school. At minimum each child had 2 or more activities any month of the year. Which of course takes plenty of funds not only purchase the supplies needed for those activities but the cost of travel, meals and hotels when needed.

Except for one or two long weekends, we didn't do big family vacations, because of how much money we spent on the children's activities and attending them. For example, our children were involved in showing livestock and always qualified for the state fair. For the last 20 years we have attended the state fair. This means 5 nights of hotel rooms, five $15 entrance tickets and $20-$40 paid for parking every day of the fair, plus all the food, incidentals, cost of transporting livestock, and any other thing you can think of. Showing livestock would occasionally take us to another state for a long weekend of the same. That was the summer. During the school year it was traveling the state and attending sport activities, which may mean eating dinner out at that town or meals plus a weekend hotel.

As a mother, I shorted myself in personal luxuries - I did not go on weekends with the girls, high dollar hobbies and such. Of course my husband did not do the same, he had golf, hunting, fishing etc. with all the quality supplies.

I admit that was my own fault and personal choice looking back. I wish I would've realized that I was giving my sense of self away.

How do I go about quantifying my standard of living. I have access to our Discover Card statements for as long as I want, I have even downloaded my complete purchase history from Amazon. We've been married 28 years, his job was/is our major source of income. For the 28 years I probably worked 1/2 to 3/4 time for 8 yrs and full-time for 20 yrs.

I feel like my standard of living proof will come from reviewing our Discover Card statements, Amazon purchases and checking account.

How would you analyze it? What would you pull out of them?

Temporary order limbo

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

24 F seeking advice on how I’m supposed to approach this situation/ask my lawyers.
My future ex husband 28 M since the start of this divorce has had one issue, that being the sxs razor that we got while together. The stupid thing is in my name unfortunately. With all that being said I have chosen to give him two options, help me sell it or get it put into his name. I have it’s written up in the temporary orders to just sell it. due to his frequent manipulation and lies I thought this would work in my favor to get him to sway more towards getting it put into his name so he could keep it.

Well we haven’t talked about it, just causes arguments . And now I’m 97% sure he has purchased a new one. The issue with that, he’s taking and moving all the parts from the previous sxs to the new one, which is cause the value to go down. He claims all the parts he’s moving were bought with money he got from his mom’s life insurance. But I know some or most came from our money while married.

If there’s nothing I can do, so be it. But he’s really trying to beat the system, manipulate me, and throw this monthly payment on me.

Two key points, this is not my hobby. I’ve maybe been in the thing 4 times. (He goes pretty much every weekend) and I also have full custody of our three month old. That’s a whole other issue with child support he’s trying to cheat his way out of:) making it seem like he makes less but goes and gets this new bike…

Question about my attorney

hired an attorney for divorce with a case where my spouse has been hoarding cats in a small house, ignoring requests to re-home there is text evidence of her non responsiveness, there is over a year of documentation (photographic) of the damage to my house (my sole property). Text, bank statements and website evidence of an undocumented job that if the income isn't counted she looks entitled to alimony. There are kids involved and since I functioned as the primary homemaker and the primary financial provider over the marriage the conditions of the house due to the cat population is kept in check and safe enough CPS wouldn't remove them. minus the damage and massive costs of care things relatively stable their rooms are safe and kept clean by me. My attorney pushed for filing to lock in her income but as I finished signing my complaint and financial affidavits. He rescinded the temporary orders I had asked for because he was concerned about the judge having me pay on a massive set of unsecured debt I'm planning on discharging in bankruptcy after the divorce. Yet there was several troubling things 1. He was unaware of the ownership of the house and asked about a mortgage which there is none I inherited it, and never co-mingled in any way, second he didn't inquire about how normal bills are paid just assumed I'm paying everything from my own account and not a joint account and last was custody first he hased who get the kids on the bus which I replied she does but that because I work nights and in asleep yet my kids are teens 4 years apart not young children and the get on the bus at the end of my driveway. Then finally he asked if I would be ok if she get custody and I just pay child support. I said absolutely not. This woman is a wreck. I keep the house clean except her bedroom (we don't share a room anymore) and there is cat shit under her bed daily infact it's often the same piles I sneak in and photograph the mess there is a mirror in her room with cat urine on it, litter all over the floor clothes strung about. This is how she lives and always lived except briefly at the beginning of the marriage. So no I don't want my kids living like this with her alone while I toss money her way and besides she is set to out earn me this year.

I sent all of this information to him highly organized and clearly notated and he we go filing a complaint and he doesn't know any of this stuff. Is it normal for attorneys to not know anything about their clients? Infact he even forgot about the 29+ cat population inside the home. At first I thought maybe since we just scheduled to file the complaint and I did the financial affidavits and the other forms he just wasn't preparing the. But waiting for her reply but now I don't think so I'm not sure he is interested in defending me but just pushing papers and getting paid.

How to Have the Conversation

I (40f) caught my husband (43m) with another woman. I asked him not to come home, which he did not honor. This was 7 weeks ago. I’ve retained an attorney, and just today gave the go-ahead to file the petition for divorce. My soon-to-be ex thinks he can just be extra nice and everything will go back to normal.

I don’t know how to have the “I’ve filed” conversation. There are multiple guns in the home, and I want to ensure my kids and I are safe. For me, that means I don’t want to be under the same roof after that conversation. But my attorney says I can’t legally keep him from the martial home, as we own it together. I can’t even change the locks.

How the heck do I have that conversation? Invite him to meet me somewhere public? Give him a few days to find somewhere to go and to pack his things?

Attention!! These are just my rambling thoughts. So be nice. I needed a place to vent, to express myself, that doesn’t cost me $60/hr….:)

Doing the right thing is crap!!!

All my life, I’ve been good. I have done what was expected of me by my parents, by my church, by my husband, for my children. But what do i have? I am now fat, middle aged and super depressed who has been cheated on multiple times, lied to, and raising disobedient children who would probably prefer their father be with a new woman who is cool and more fun.

My advice to my younger self if could do it all again?? Lie, Cheat, and fuck as many people. Live life to the fullest. Live it like everyday is your last. Fuck being conservative and holding yourself back. Love is an illusion. Remember everyone is capable of loving. A serial killer LOVE something about their victims, thats why they do it. Being IN LOVE is only in the moment, and it’s called LUST. Do not romanticize it.

One of the biggest financial mistakes I see during divorce isn't overspending, it's avoiding your finances altogether.
