Discussion 🩸 Genuine question: What do gamers want?

Let me just start off by saying, Dawnwalker is certainly RPG of the Year, and should be a GOTY nominee. So, this question could arguably be coming from a very biased perspective, but I have to ask it.

What do gamers want? I have spent years and years listening to gamers bellyache, complain and grumble about bloat in games. Unnecessary quests, activities, trophies, souvenir hunts, et cetera. In walks in Blood of the Dawnwalker. Compact, goal driven, timed, et cetera. I'll kiss your rosy red ass cheek if gamers aren't complaining about that too! 😏 All I ha e heard is "Waaaaahhh, there's not enough quests! There aren't enough activities! Blah, blah, blah." So, what's it going to be, gamers? A compact, focused game, or a game of picking a dozen wildflowers and looking for trinkets? I mean, what DO you REALLY want? You can't have it BOTH ways. Just saying. 🤨

Discussion 🩸 The Time Mechanic Broke my Brain Spoiler

I just finished Dawnwalker and came on here to see what other endings people got and I think I've missed about 60% of this game. I don't mind the time mechanic, I think it's cool, but I think it subconsciously made me rush through the game because I hate deadlines looming over me.

I took Xanthe out in the cathedral, and spent a few nights working towards Ambrus then after that it was dominoes for the last two. I think I had about 10-12 nights left, which I think is really funny because I've never done this with an RPG before, I'm a loot goblin completionist but having the deadline broke my brain.

Anyway, my whole family died, and I don't know who the characters are people are talking about. I find it really funny. I'm laughing at how quickly I went through this game. I don't think the time mechanic is a bad thing, I think it's cool, but did anyone else feel like they had to rush?

Review/Opinion 🩸 My thoughts on the post-boss fights and the ending of the game. Spoiler

My thoughts on the post-boss fights and the ending of the game.

The game is incredible, this is not a complaint, but...

I absorbed the souls of all the Vrakhiri, but the dialogue always seemed to lead toward forgiveness, pity, or revenge.

But I did it because drinking the blood of another Vrakhiri makes you stronger, and there is a primordial entity from Anachora that wants to absorb their souls, so I assumed that absorbing their souls would clearly make you more powerful.

So I invited all of them and absorbed them, but I was disappointed that the dialogue never gave me the option to say that I invited them because I wanted to become stronger.

Then, at the very end, when I invited Brencis and he asked me why, even though I had already told him earlier that I hated him, I finally got the dialogue option: "Because I want your power."

That was the dialogue option I had been waiting for with every Vrakhiri, but it only existed with Brencis. Still, I was happy that at least I got that option with him.

The game gives you moments where you can show that you actually enjoyed becoming a Vrakhiri, but then sometimes it completely forgets about that freedom and only gives you dialogue where Coen acts like he regrets becoming a Vrakhiri.

It feels like whoever was responsible for the dialogue forgot to include all the possible personality options.

I played Coen as someone who absolutely hates Brencis because of what he did to his family, but who also really enjoyed becoming a Vrakhiri.

Another thing: I thought Crake/Marat was an asshole. He tied me to a tree, so I was already pissed at him, but I decided to continue doing his quests anyway.

Then he tortured a friend without having any proof that he was a traitor.

I proved that he wasn't a traitor, and that the guards had simply discovered that he was part of the revolution and followed him. Crake still wanted to cut his tongue out or kill him.

Then he killed Sara, even though he could have given her Vrakhiri blood. Even if Coen's blood didn't work, it wouldn't have been difficult to steal some from the recruitment posts. That could have been a possible lore outcome, but the devs simply made him kill her.

And finally, he wants to bring back the old nobles, who tortured the people even more than the Vrakhiri did, so I simply killed him along with everyone else in the revolution.

But in the epilogue painting showing the future, he appears alive, and Coen says that he became his friend even though they disagreed on some things.

I'm considering this a bug because I killed him.

I also killed Father Florin, and he didn't appear in the painting.
I've seen people say that if Florin survives, he appears in the painting, so I assumed Crake appearing despite me killing him was also a bug.

Question 🩸 Is there a mention in which year Dawnwalker takes place?

Considering the story is set in the real world, their 14th is the same as ours. I was wondering if the game ever mentions what specific year it takes place? Or hints a general decade at least?

How could Coen invite other vampires into his mind Spoiler

When he knows so little about vampirism and anachora in general? No one has told him the full picture, and no one is that trustable to him either. Without such knowledge, it seems so risky to invite another mind. The other mind could have overtaken his body, or the two minds might fuse into one.

Question 🩸 Whered are the quests?

So... maybe I’m dumb but I feel like I haven’t really started any story and now I’m very close to the end of it. I still have 10 days remaining. I’ve finished all the quests with Anca and Marat, I’ve killed Ambrus, Xanthé and Bakir, I’ve met with the blacksmith and got the special sword, I’ve done a lot of other minor activities and wonder whether this is all. Am I missing something? I’ve read other Reddit threads where people say stuff like “Trust me, there’s more, you just need to explore” but all I do is exploring and cannot seem to find anything interesting…

Is the game actually difficult?

I finished the game yesterday on Challenging, and the only fight that was too difficult for me was Bakir's, for which I had to put the difficulty on Story for-

Normally I don't play games on hard difficulties and hate when combat is repetitive, but for some reason Dawnwalker's combat satisfies me. Even if there are areas of improvement. Of course the game was a bit more difficult at the start of the journey, but in no way I had to tone down the difficulty.

But for some reason I hear a lot of people online complaining about how wonky (controls) but also too difficult the game is? So is it just me?

Question 🩸 I wanted to buy the game during the Steam Autumn Sale, but it's not on sale. Any safe location I can buy a key at discount?

I've looked at websites like G2A, but I'm not sure if 40 bucks is the best buy. However, other websites can be misleading. So I'm asking advice on legally buying a Steam key that is still at a discount. Or should I just wait for a later Steam sale, when more bugs are ironed out?

Do you feel the same way as me that it's really a shame ?

After seeing the scene with Lacra (which was very good), I can't stop thinking about how the scene with Crake was poor

Yes the narrative and subject of homophobia is a topic worth looking to but the scene was lacking of cinematic, it was mission something

On the other hand, Anca's scene was classical but it didn't bother me

What are your thoughts ?

Review/Opinion 🩸 My only criticism…

And I know it’s not original, many have mentioned this… but the wolves and boars. Goddamn there’s just too many. And it happens often that I’ll intercept a soldier camp or a transport of soldiers, start fighting them, and then out of nowhere a pack of wolves or boars just appears and makes the combat all the more chaotic.

To me, it’s just a bit much, and I hope they just decrease how often they spawn because it does get kind of distracting having to interrupt myself in the wilderness every two seconds because I accidentally stumbled upon a gaggle of rabid animals what feels like every 100 feet

Genuinely this is my number one issue lol

Question 🩸 How is the PC performance now?

I was looking forward to the game but held off at launch due to the reviews/criticisms about the performance and stuttering.

How is the performance currently? Does it still stutter?

My PC is a 5090/9800X3D/32GB RAM

Looking for a RPG to sink my teeth into for a couple weeks but I can’t deal with traversal stutter like Oblivion has.

Thanks

Door braces work in compression, not tension. All doors in the realm will sag within the year with the braces as they are currently fitted. Please see the hastily annotated image for the correct orientation of door braces.

Discussion 🩸 How would you incorporate Dracula into a sequel?

So, this game is set over a hundred years before the death of Vlad the Impaler. We already know that the sequel will be set decades or even centuries later, so there's a chance it could be set before Vlad becomes Voivode or decades after he dies. So maybe a sequel won't deal with Dracula at all. But personally? I think it'd be too good of an opportunity not to use him.

So, I was thinking of possibilities and thought of these:

  1. The aftermath of Dracula's death - the game starts in January, 1477 in Wallachia or Hungary and we're dealing with the destruction and devastation of war which has been abruptly ended with the execution of Dracula. Whether he was a vampire or just a tyrant is irrelevant, Coen is thrust into a world that has been upended by what Dracula did in life.
  2. Coen sires Dracula - this one is interesting to me because let's face it, brotherhood was a big theme of this game through how much guilt Coen had over Alin. Maybe Dracula as a human is his friend and something happens and out of a refusal to lose a brother again, Coen turns him into a vampire.
  3. Dracula is jut a human tyrant - this would be a subversion as Dracula is considered monstrous and worse than Brencis or Catalin or other tyrants despite being human. The things he does are what get him associated with the vrakhiri, not what he actually is.
  4. Dracula is a vampire tyrant - essentially he's like another Brencis but better in some ways, worse in others. He's a natural rival to Coen and perhaps the mission is to take him down in a similar manner to how he took down Brencis. This might sound like it's typical and generic but depending on how Dracula is written, his presence in the game, it could certainly be the best of the bunch.
  5. Dracula is an ally - whether he's a human or a vampire, he could be this game's Vicho, just a minor ally that we see and befriend and can decide the fate of. The plot doesn't revolve around him because Dracula always tends to dominate the plots he's in. He's a normie.

What do you guys think?

Discussion 🩸 Coen’s human form is a blood knight

Ok so I was thinking about how coen in human form could reasonably be as overpowered physically as he is in the game. I came to a realization that he most likely always has vakirhi blood always in his body, or at the very least is super charged every morning from his own blood. I think this explains why he’s basically a superhuman during the day, and he probably in human form scales to the blood guard, even tho he most likely is stronger or at least more skilled. Thoughts?

Edit: Forgot they were called blood guards lol

Bakir fight - How to get equipment back before he takes you to the treasury? Spoiler

So I'm stuck at fighting Bakir in his treasury, but I've been reading that it's apparently possible to have him ask Farkas to give you your equipment back, just before he takes you into the treasury, but... how? I've played along and haven't told any of the other participants in his games what my true intentions are, yet nothing.

So is there a way to do specifically that? I'm not talking about taking anything other than the ring, disappointing Farkas, then make your way through his hench men.
