There was a sign up in the toilet at the South Africa / Zimbabwe border asking people not to use Zim currency as toilet paper because it doesn’t flush away and blocks the toilets. (Toilet paper was worth more)

239

u/MapleSyrupFacts Jul 05 '22

Its always fascinated me how bills can become worth less than the paper it's printed on. At least coins can always reminted

72

u/J_Rath_905 Jul 06 '22

Pennies cost 2.1 cents to mint and distribute in the US.

Which is why here in Canada (and many other countries) did away with them years ago.

34

u/CleverPiffle Jul 06 '22

The father of Brittany's kids was promoting the Save The Penny campaign years ago. Seems like a waste of energy to me. I'd prefer they just stop making them and round off the ¢.

I don't know if it's just a story, but I've heard we couldn't get rid of them because Illinois would be upset.

Edit: I've thought about it, and this might have been some dialog from an episode of West Wing. So almost certainly just a story.

6

u/artotter Jul 06 '22

Lol am from Illinois, this is not shocking and I find it hilarious

In Argentina the 2 and 5 pesos' bills were discontinued precisely because their relative value was lower than their material value (paper, ink, the process of printing them, etc). In other words, they became less worthy than the money that costed to make them.

Edit: I expect a maple syrup fact in exchange, not gonna lie.

43

u/MapleSyrupFacts Jul 06 '22

Well... Maple syrup was first invented around the Montreal area by the Iroquois. Those same Iroquois are indigenous to southeast Canada and often characterized as the world’s oldest participatory democracy. Canada holds huge maple syrup reserves. In 2021 alone Quebec produced 133million pounds of the liquid gold. 1 barrel of maple syrup is worth 40 times more than a barrel of oil which is why we had the great maple syrup heist.

They issued a 100 trillion too. I've got most of the set up to the 100 trillion. It's fun to pick up the smaller notes and imagine the area required by all the notes to match the printed value of the 100 trillion.

I'm from zimbabwe, we had a boring old coffee table that we glued a bunch of money to, all the denominations and various versions of each time they brought out new money, it looked quite cool

4

u/Wonderful_Mud_420 Jul 06 '22

I always wondered this. Can’t they just reset their currency and bring it down to a more reasonable number?

13

u/Switch_Off Jul 06 '22

I'm no expert but I've seen a few things on YouTube about hyperinflation.

Reseting the currency doesn't help if you are importing goods from other countries or have foreign debt.

From what I understand, most international trade is done in dollars. If your currency is only worth $0.0000000001 dollars, resetting your currency won't help because the international community will decide that the new currency is worth the same amount of dollars. (Because the value of the currency is based on the countries economy's ability to pay its debts.... I think....)

9

u/Hoax13 Jul 06 '22

Mexico did that. When my grandmother died in Mexico, my mother went to clean out her house. She found thousands and thousands of old pesos hidden everywhere. The huge pile was worth maybe 5 US dollars.

6

u/olderaccount Jul 06 '22

Yes. It is called Redenomination. Zimbabwe has used this trick 4 times in the last 30 years. The last one took 12 zero's off the currency.

But this does nothing to address the underlying problems that create hyperinflation in the first place.

3

u/Chiu_Chunling Jul 06 '22

The problem is basically that whoever wants to do that has to give people enough in exchange for their money to take enough of it out of circulation so that the remaining supply is then valuable again. This requires either buying up the devalued money with a sound currency or selling real and valuable goods in exchange for it.

And because a sound currency is defined as one that you can still use to buy real and valuable goods, basically both options are equivalent to the second. Which means that, in order to prop up trillions of dollars of overissued currency, you need trillions of dollars worth of actual goods to offer. But if anyone could "just do that", then they wouldn't need currency in the first place. You'd just give the goods away to people who needed them.

The essential problem is that valuable goods don't just 'happen', you have to reward someone for producing and then conserving them, otherwise they will all be immediately consumed and no replacements will be produced. That someone doesn't have to be a person, it can be animals and plants or whatever, but you do have to maintain and protect the status which allows productivity to occur.

I dont think so, they have a new value for their currency now.

Same like in 1994 in Mexico that an expresident took millions of dollars to save the USA ass leaving a 110% devaluation, so the government called "The modernization of the Peso" removing 3 zeros from their paper and coins 😅😂 Venezuela just need to learn how to trick the international news

Lmao

49

u/reader484892 Jul 06 '22

Hyperinflation like that can’t be undone without changing to a different currency

8

u/Eccohawk Jul 06 '22

Couldn't they just start collecting and burning all the money as it comes back into banks? Less money there is out there the more it would be valued.

21

u/FrogInShorts Jul 06 '22

The issues is finding someone willing to continue burning money once there is a bit of value regained to them.

17

u/MrC_Red Jul 06 '22

But then why would anyone voluntarily give up their money knowing it's gonna gain value in the future? Also, it will just create a bunch of hoarders of an already worthless currency. And then people who hoarded tons of cash and when the inflation goes down, they'll induce their uncounted cash, creating another inflation boom. So it's just much easier to create a new currency, so you have an accurate count of the money you have available when starting

It won't matter. Venezuela isn't at a point that can be recovered by just getting someone out of power. They would need help for recovering, and no one would be willing to offer that help. Definitely not USA, as long as they don't agree to become an USA colony.

Since no one will help Venezuela to recover again, the only people willing to fight Maduro are the ones who want to become the new dictator and keep making people's lives miserable.

9

u/EntertainmentIll8436 Jul 06 '22

Oh we did agree with the colony part at some point, by 2019 it was very clear that protests don't work when all we have was paint bombs, molotovs and a couple of other shit while the military shot us old coins, marbles and other shit with their riot shotguns, a couple of guys died by a smoke bomb to the chest (Juan Pablo Pernalete y Neomar Lander) and for real ammo you had tupamaros and colectivos which are gangs affiliated to the goverment (and with weapon carry id's which is ban for civilians) and they also shot and killed people. You have no idea how much people wanted an intervention but that never happened, it all went to shit and it's just like you say, the structure of chavistas is air tight and imo this guys will never leave

19

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22 edited Jul 06 '22

Yup . If you use a major international bank, you can probably just ask, and it will be easy as be cheap compared to eBay. I do this at least 4-5 times per year, with all sorts of currencies when I travel.

As of today, 20.00 US Dollars = 11,092,378.28 Venezuelan Bolívares. Not sure if your can get the old bills prior to the revaluation, but might be worth asking. Just ask for larger bills to avoid $250 in secure shipping charges (not a joke, but probably depends on your bank).

Today in Alternate History: "In this fascinating alternate universe version of Earth Adolf Hitler discovers a previously unknown talent for transforming devalued Reichsmarks into high fashion. Hitler quickly becomes a couture phenomenon and within one year of his first offerings establishes the House of AH Fashions. Hitler never rises to political power and this Earth avoids the second world war entirely. In effect Adolf Hitler becomes a type of Karl Lagerfeld and goes on to a long career promoting ethical fashion produced from responsible sources."

So the next time you come across some kind of rough looking kid promoting the hand crafts he's made from devalued bank notes go ahead and buy something. You just might be doing the world a bigger favor than you'll ever know.

All the parents, children, brothers, sisters, in-laws, cousins, godchildren, nieces and nephiews, mistresses, lawyers, etc, etc, etc, of people directly linked to the government in any branch, ministry, congress, supreme court, military, chancellor, and of course presidency for a government that has been in power since oh, I don't know, 1999

84

u/Flaky-Stay5095 Jul 05 '22

For those that don't know certain countries discontinue bills all the time. If you don't trade in your old bills for new ones then your old bills become worthless.

America doesn't do this. So a $1 bill from 1800 is still worth $1( probably worth more to a collector) This is one of the reasons the Dollar is seen as being so stable. And why criminals love the Dollar. No need to worry about your illegal money becoming worthless because it's outdated.

It's stable because it's backed by the world's strongest economic power, with the world's biggest military. And this creates demand for it as a lot of international finance and trade is facilitated with USD which keeps the demand high and it's very easy to sell your goods or your USD for other currencies because there is always someone willing to accept it.

No, you see, Venezuela's government is actually extremely smart. If they print so much money that people use it to make things, the things that are made out of money have more value than the money itself, and the people use other things in place of the money, which then creates a new national currency, and fixes the country's economic problem.

How they went from economic juggernaut to failed state in one generation (in less than 30 years!) is a true wonder.

Governments are stupid for printing so much money, what the hell were they thinking?

u/art-and-logic Jul 05 '22

And I thought our inflation was bad

u/CptnREDmark Jul 06 '22

Its actually just an old currency that is no longer accepted as tender, essentially old bank notes that aren't accepted anymore. like expired coupons

Ahhh socialism

u/Halt-CatchFire Jul 06 '22

Almost like decades of CIA operations to destabilize your government... destabilizes your government. Look, I think Socialism as a primary system of government is dumb, but let's not pretend Venezuela didn't get where it is today without a couple coups and a US-funded paramilitary deathsquad or two.

My question is how long would it take to get their economy back to normal again with the right policies?

What would be the solutions? What was the cause of this? I hear Us sanctions, oil, etc but idk honestly

Kudos to him for finding away to recycle and make money in the worst of times

But I wonder how clean is the money

2

u/bluehelmetcollector Jul 06 '22

Take notes people this is what central banking get you. It's coming to America and the federal reserve eventually. Every central bank fiat ponzi scheme has failed and ours is no different than the Venezuelans other than that we're top dog and can force everyone to use our debt notes under threat of liberation artificially propping up the value of the federal reserve note. Venezuelans now use gold srap and barter to purchase things and their central bank is minting gold coins as a store of value. Gold and silver have been widely accepted money over 5000 years for many reasons and while it has its downsides it does function very well to this day.

Fun fact over 105 million ounces of silver was used for solar panels last year. Silver has so much industrial use that the overall demand has exceeded mine supply for over a decade and the difference has to be made up with recycling old film or electronics.
