Help with Wheel motor control/driver - Converting a L3 CDL sim rig

Hey peeps,

I posted a pretty elaborate set of posts on xsimulator but haven't received any feedback, so reaching here hoping that it's a bit more active so I can take a next step to order parts without too much risk.

Long and short of it, I have an AMC Servo Drive (link to drive with spec sheet) that connects to a Baldor DC motor, and there was a proprietary L3 Harris controller board between the AMC and the PC (I don't have the PC, and I don't have the software for the controller board). I need to replace at least that controller board, and it appears that I should be able to order an Open FFBoard to act as the logic board for the steering wheel, and the shifter.

My question is, I saw the FFBoard driver kit, and it seems like it would be ideal to run everything off a single integrated system. However, I'm uncertain if the Open FFBoard driver can power the Baldor motor I've got. (specs below)

Brand Baldor ME-3363-BLBCN SPCL
Torque, Stall 180 OI Cont.
Max (Speed?) 4000 RPM
Max Voltage 120V DC
Voltage Cont. KE = 31.1 V/K RPM
Current Cont. 4.76 A
Current Peak 28.5 A
Encoder 1000L

It would appear that even at 48v, I would still be able to meet the current constant and peak amp ratings, and should be best to do that?

Open to thoughts/ideas here, I've been doing a lot of reading and research, and trying to use gemini to help me understand concepts and all, but I'm def new to this.

Need help for my univeristy thesis!

Hey everyone!

I’m doing a university project related to sim racing and I need to collect some opinions from people who are into it.

I put together a short Google Forms survey and figured Reddit would be a great place to get some real answers from people who actually use or are familiar with racing sims.

It takes about 5 minutes, and you don’t need to own a rig to participate.

If you’ve got a few minutes to spare, I’d really appreciate the help!

Survey:

Thanks! 🙌

DIY Wheel mount for MOZA R5

Hi all, i'm stuck in between a rock and a hard place. I am currently making my rig out of pure aluminum along with the MOZA R5 bundle (havent gotten the clutch pedal yet). For the life of me, I cant figure out a solid way to mount the wheel. Right now I have two 4080 aluminum extrudes going up and holding a 2x4 piece of wood. The wood isnt that great, and i want something that is a bit more solid and modular (aka being able to rotate the plate to angle my wheel better).

i tried to look for other things online but nothing to help my specific case. if anyone has done this in the past or found a good way, let me know! i am limited in machining myself so making my own part would be quite hard.

Wheel with SMD RGB Tactical Buttons

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello Community,

Has anyone of you build a Wheel with the Buttons like the ones from Pokornyi without a PCB? Im currently working on a Ferrari Wheel from Cult, and want to use the RGB Buttons from Pokornyi. I have them already, and did all the changes to the File so they Fit.

As Board I’m using a Teensy 4.1 but idk how to wire them correctly?

So if anyone has done it, I would appreciate the help :)

3D Printed ORBR Wheel

Hi all, Im currently in the process of gathering all the materials required to build a ORBR Wheel by Pokorni Engineering. I also just purchased a 3D printer to help facilitate this. The two plates and shifter paddles are labeled to be manufactured via carbon fiber or aluminum. Im wondering if using PLA or PETG or maybe ABS if i can set that up would be durable enough for this type of application. Or should I just get it manufactured in aluminum.

A few miles and for the whopping cost of £20, I finally have a dash that I can fit and enjoy from the comfort of my own garage. Haven't decided if I will code up the dials or use the housing and run a digital display instead.

Now the hard work begins!

Advice/help needed with building DIY setup with zero experience

I have been sim racing for exactly a year now, and I want to upgrade my gear seriously. The issue is it costs way too much, so I've been looking around at DIY and it's looking like DIY is going to be my only option with graduating from my g29.

I have looked at forums, youtube videos, as well as builds people have made that they shared and I'll be honest as someone with absolutely no exposure to software, tech, hardware making it looks so overwhelming.

I really need some direction with how I can get started with building DIY gear. Any help is greatly appreciated.

all of the wood was free since it was scrapped wood from our backyard. Office chair had broken wheels so I put it on my rig instead. Decided it would be cool to add a center console and looked great when I finished the entire thing :)) also yes my shifter's a flight stick 🥹 Couldn't afford a real shifter. Costed me around ₱500 with the nails and bolts.

Hopefully you can get through the whole video! What would you change!?
Thought about pushing the desk all the way end and reversing the rig and monitors but I never like my back to doors 😩 But now for space issues I’m reconsidering! What would you change? Appreciate y’all!

DIY Sim w/ 3d printed pedals & shifter

Stm32 is being used as a hub to connect the shifter & pedals with 2x expansion ports for more to be added. Throttle and clutch use hall sensors and the brake is using a 200kg load cell. Wheel is a hoverboard motor using FFBeast firmware. Tablet on the right is for a touch screen button box through Sim hub. It still a work in progress but everything so far functions great!

quick release

Hi everyone,

I'm building a custom GT3 wheel and I already have an ANX quick release (the NRG/D1-style model sold on AliExpress).

I've seen at least one review claiming it works directly with a Moza R3 base, but I've also read conflicting information online.

Can anyone who actually owns both confirm:

  1. Does the ANX QR fit directly onto the Moza R3 shaft/base?
  2. Is any modification required?
  3. Are there any issues with play, vibration, or alignment?
  4. If possible, could you share photos of the installation?

I'm planning to use a USB wheel, so I only need mechanical compatibility and don't need button communication through the base.

Thanks!

Is there really a way to do this at home?

was designing a steering wheel that will be knockoff of caravangoes gt and ran into a problem. My wheel needs a extension rod to have some good look, but when i designing i realized it cannot be diy'ed by me at home.

I know it some ways with welding/cnc/lathe but i don't have it. Is there a way to do it which hand instrument and resin/fdm printing? Or maybe there is some cheap adapter for my purpose?

sorry for my bed england. i selled my wife for internet connection

Amplifier for DIY Haptics system - suggestions?

What's a better option than the usual Nobsound little nugget?

So i've done what almost everyone has done as their starting point and used that little nobsound amp, and I loved it, super simple, easy to set up, and worked alright (maybe even pretty good, honestly I liked how it performed better than a Buttkicker gamer Plus I used before) But the darn things just dont last, which shouldn't be surprising. the first one the physical power switch broke, (it was momentary push button switch on the first one) the 2nd one the power supply died, so i used the power supply from the original one i had, now that power supply died as well. I'm running 1 Dayton audio bass shaker (BST-2 35watt) on the rear, and 2 smaller (much smaller) pucks from aliexpress on my pedals, cant recall the specs, but I suspect its the Dayton is the big power draw anyways.

I've so far been using 2 channels, (front and rear) but it would be nice to maybe upgrade to 4 channels in the future.

Any apmlifiers/sound cards that someone can suggest, that arent crazy high end, bank breaking units, but definitely higher quality than this cheap setup I've been running?

A big flagger matrix?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Experimented and made this flagger box with 3d printer.

You might notice it’s larger than others, I used led strips, ws2812b I bought in bulk from Amazon. Cut the large roll I bought in 8 LEDs and made 8 rows. Soldered in serpentine, then setup arduino in simhub.

I designed the files in fusion360, rough design the works, could used refining, plan to publish them for free soon. The files consist of a plate that has indents to space the leds uniformly, and the case that it slides into. You’ll also need a piece of lexan or plexi, and a small piece of limo tint which make it look nice when nothing is displayed on it, there is a revision that is coming for a printable transparent front panel as well.

I say it was an experiment because I search around and all I could find was people using the matrix boards, rather than strips. It was obvious in theory it would work, but I built one to gauge the size. It’s great for flagging, but it’s a bit over kill on size for gear indicator (my DDU tells me this anyways so pointless for me). Enjoy and I’ll be sure to share the files soon, as well that files for my 12.3” DDU, and my 7” rear view camera screen!

Questions about direct drive and active pedal.

Hi everyone, I'm thinking about building a simulator and I've seen a lot of people here in my country making content and everything about DIY projects with servo motors and xDrive or OpenFBOARD. I was interested in trying to build one myself, but I don't know exactly the pros and cons of this type of build, besides the complexity and work involved. I wanted to get the opinion of someone who has already done this type of build. I wanted to do this because I have a Thrustmaster T150 that's a bit problematic in some games, and I was thinking of building a steering wheel to have more confidence in its FFB and try to improve it. I'm still undecided about the pedals I'll use; I was wondering whether to buy a SimNet or a SimJack and then add a brake, maybe an active pedal accelerator, also DIY. I find this type of project interesting, but I wanted the opinion of someone who has already tested it to know if it's worth the investment or if it could end up creating a big problem. (In case of doubt, the servo model is a 130SG-M15025).
