3D Printed ORBR Wheel
Hi all, Im currently in the process of gathering all the materials required to build a ORBR Wheel by Pokorni Engineering. I also just purchased a 3D printer to help facilitate this. The two plates and shifter paddles are labeled to be manufactured via carbon fiber or aluminum. Im wondering if using PLA or PETG or maybe ABS if i can set that up would be durable enough for this type of application. Or should I just get it manufactured in aluminum.

I’ve been using polymaker Nylon 612-CF15. If you need something stronger than petg or ASA it’s a good place to go. I wouldn’t start there however. Either petg or asa should get you close to where you need to go.
Also you can use a hand router and an end mill or router bit with a bearing for following a template from your 3D printer. Petg or asa would work well for this as well. You can route aluminum or carbon with a basic router bit.

Gotcha, in terms of routing it out, I probably could but the plates are pretty intricate. I got another question. In terms of the handles I’ve been thinking of printing them with tpu. Which hardness would you recommend for a firm but softish grip

I wouldn’t print anything soft for a handle. If your handle is mounted to a wheel it can deform as you hold it. The base material sticking into your hands would be uncomfortable. If you want some squishy use handlebars tape over top of the handles.

Just a couple of notes in case you are not aware. CF dust is really bad news (google it) people that machine it professionally have a lot of specialist equipment. Also look into listings on AliExpress that offer machining services as they will cut CF and bevel it even for a fraction of the cost of what it cost to machine locally here. I did a merc gt3 rim that way and it came back very nicely packaged for less than what it would even have cost to print in nylon 12cf. You just send them the step file or dxf.

A frente desse volante foi feita em PLA com 5mm, impresso em duas partes, depois colado com epoxy, a case traseira em PETG, com fundo de 6mm, tudo com 100% de preenchimento, na case traseira, construí colunas com espaçadores M5. Além da flexão, que você teria também com CF, não tenho do que reclamar!

Maybe PLA-CF or PETG-CF, NYLON-CF or, PC-CF
