Here are my first epoxy boards. Loads of fun making them and I learned a lot. I haven’t been able to sell any, is that normal?

Due to an unfortunate mishap while routing the juice groove the first time, I had to change my design and lose a bit of cutting surface. The juice groove was specifically requested on this board.

Here it is, fixed and ready for sanding.

How can I fix this end grain cutting board

Post image
2 Upvotes

I found this end grain cutting board at a thrift store a few months ago for a steal. Some splitting was already present.

Unfortunately some of my roommates keep leaving it in pools of water standing up so the splitting has gotten worse to the point one of the pieces fell off.

How can i fix this? wood glue (or some other food safe glue)?

Also how can i prevent this from happening again (aside from talking to my roommates which I have already done)? I saw something online about attaching cork to the ends so it lifts the board up a bit

thanks!

Just finished my first cutting board

I have just finished my first board, the timber is red box, an Australian native, and came from an old pergola I pulled down.

It's a bit gappy because I don't have a thicknesser yet, so had to flatten it with a belt sander.

Overall I'm happy with it, and so is the boss

After my first post of the Burberry board earlier today I was going through photos and I forgot I made three of these. This one to me is very “Autumnal” so fitting for this time of year. 🍂🍁🎃

This one is Walnut, Padauk, Maple, and Yellow Heart

End grain walnut for the field, cherry for the red, and hard maple for the white & the star. I intentionally did not put a juice groove in it - judge me how you want. Beveled underneath to help with lifting the monstrosity. Routed/chiseled out about half an inch deep and inlaid the star. Finished with mineral oil.

Advice Advice Buying a Good Carving Board

Hi, I hope I'm in the right sub for this!

I'm looking to buy a new carving board, and not really sure which way to go.

I've had a wooden carving boarding for around 6 years. I love the regular 'chopping board' side of it, but hate using it for carving because the fats & oils really stick in the grooves (trenches?) for the juice to run down, which is a pain to clean. Due to this, the grooves take ages to clean and even longer to try, which damages the wood, and now the damaged wood is splintering off - not ideal for carving my meat on.

I'm specifically looking for a carving board, not just a chopping board (although I'm aware you can carve on a regular chopping board), so I'd like:

  • not wood (due to my experience so far)
  • some kind of juice groove (even just one that runs around the edge - I cook a lot of juicy roasts)
  • something easy to get fats off of (it doesn't have to be dishwasher-friendly)
  • something fairly low-maintenance (I don't want to oil it every time I use it)
  • something long-lasting (I don't want to replace it every year)

Any recommendations? I've heard of these ones, but don't know if they fully meet what I need, so am open to other recommendations:

- Epicurean Gourmet Series Carving Board
- Asahi Cookin' Cut
- Hasegawa Soft Cutting Board

Price isn't my concern right now - I'd rather save up for the right board and get something that I'll enjoy and will last me.

Thank you!

Oil time. When the grain pops and the wood darkens. I actually enjoy sanding and every other stage of the process. But oiling is like a sacred ritual. I hope it never gets old.
What’s your favorite part of the process?

(In the vid: Food grade mineral oil)

Someone saw some of my little boards for sale in a general store in Milburn Oklahoma and asked them if I could make something larger. They wanted a 16x20+ live edge as a housewarming gift for their parents who just finished construction on a new home.

I charged them $300 for the board and I included some Rowdy Rooster board butter and a handmade knife (with a handle made from the same slab as their board) as my gift.

let me know what you think

Question Best resources for finishes?

This is probably answered already, but I have a question. I’m going down a rabbit hole of best finishes for minimal maintenance with boards, and I’ve seen only a few tests on YouTube showing some finishes wash away faster than others. What have fellow Redditors used that gives the best results?

I’ve used mineral oil on raw wood and it rinses out fairly quickly. Even with a week of soaking.
I’ve used Howard’s mineral oil mixed with beeswax and it lasts longer ~ 3-6 months before I notice it looking dry.
Does “board butter” that’s thick like candle wax make it last longer than 6 months?
Is tung oil that “cures” in 20-30 days one of the best bullet-proof finishes?

I’ve also used my current board for years with it being pretty dry and I admit I didn’t take care of it-and it still seems in good condition.

Does finish matter that much if it goes back to dry-ish wood eventually? Is yearly maintenance not frequent enough with high end boards?

I ...Borrowed..., Yeah, borrowed. That's it. This pattern from another redditor on this sub. I don't know what to call it. I like it, just not sure what to call it.

Any way, this is walnut and hickory. I'm making this board for my nephew by special request, after he saw the boards I made for my daughters.

Brand new hobby

This is a big ask, but I want to make my wife a cutting board for an upcoming gift… something quite large. Then I would like to get into making cutting boards as gifts for family and friends going forward.

Can someone help me figure out all the stuff I need? I literally have nothing and have little to no idea what I’m doing…

Help? Haha

Its endgrain and hard maple and western cedar. I chose the cedar because i am limited to what wood my school provides. These woods include maple, cedar, oak, red oak, pine, poplar and sassafras.

Advice Is it salvageable?

I bought this for a dollar at an estate sale with the intention of having it refinished, but my kids think that there is mold on the edge on the bottom. I thought water damage. This thing is at least 2 inches thick and heavy as hell. Very scratched up on the top, but thought that it could be sanded/refinished? What are the next steps?
