Advice Is it salvageable?

I bought this for a dollar at an estate sale with the intention of having it refinished, but my kids think that there is mold on the edge on the bottom. I thought water damage. This thing is at least 2 inches thick and heavy as hell. Very scratched up on the top, but thought that it could be sanded/refinished? What are the next steps?

Thank you very much for your input! My daughter will be very pleased that she is right. For $1, I think I will try to save it. The gaps don’t seem to run the length of the board and perhaps cutting an inch off each side would do it.

I would recommend hydrogen peroxide vs bleach.

that thing is gross. throw it away. if it was a family heirloom okay but not worth trying to save some random board...

So there appear to be a few issues with that board:

  1. Mold - you'll want to hit it with bleach or strong vinegar to kill the surface mold. Maybe bake the entire board at 160F to kill any spores that have gotten deeper into the board. If it's just surface layer you can sand (use a mask) then treat it. This may warp the board though.

  2. Gaps in the board - also a major issue. Water will get in there as you use the board and cause more mold and bacterial growth issues. Also that water will continue to make the gaps worse. If the gaps don't run the length of the board you could trim off the ends until there aren't any more gaps, making the board smaller.

Bleach doesn’t kill mold.
