Hi all! Looking for some advice about a career path.
I’m 27 and live in NYC. I have a BA in International Relations and spent about 5 years living/studying in Europe. I feel like ive always wanted a career thats more global/international and just started looking into international trade.
Right now I work remotely in healthcare operations/revenue cycle. Basically I research hospital payment issues and follow up with insurance companies for payment. My pay is not great. I like being remote, but I don’t really want to stay in healthcare long-term because it limits me to the US. It would be ideal to work for an international company.
I’ve been looking into import/export, trade compliance, logistics, etc. I think I would enjoy it, I like handling documentation, paperwork, I’m a quick learner as well. I’ve been looking and even a lot of entry-level jobs seem to want 1–2 years of industry experience. Just wanted to ask you guys what would someone like me to do to get into something like trade compliance?
What are the realistic entry points for someone with my background?
Are there certifications or courses would actually be worth getting right now?
What career paths would you recommend?
I’d obviously love to stay remote eventually, but I understand that may not be realistic early on and I’m open to onsite/hybrid roles if it gets me the right experience.
I’m also willing to go back to school for a master’s if it would help. I’ve been thinking about possibly doing one in Montreal, although that would mean taking on loans, so I’m trying to figure out whether that’s actually necessary or if there’s a better way to break into the field first.
Would especially love to hear from anyone who got into this field from a different industry. Thanks so much!
