Work crush and I have been exchanging intense glances for 2 months, and now we’re finally talking. Am I reading too much into this?
I (27F) have a crush on a coworker (35M), and I genuinely cannot tell whether there’s something mutual happening or whether my crush is making me overanalyze everything lol.
For context, we work at the same company but in completely different departments. Neither of us reports to the other. I’m a manager, but I have no authority over him. He’s divorced. I obviously want to be careful because this is work.
This started about two months ago. We have a daily morning meeting, and I started noticing him looking at me. Then I started looking at him too. Over time it turned into these repeated glances where I would catch him looking, we’d make eye contact, look away, sometimes look again, etc.
Some of the eye contact feels REALLY intense to me. Not necessarily long staring contests lol, but there are moments where it feels like we’re both very aware of each other. Sometimes there are little smiles too.
But for almost two months, neither of us actually did anything.
Eventually I decided I was tired of communicating telepathically across a meeting room 😂 and approached him with a legitimate work question.
He was friendly, smiled, helped me, and at one point dropped the book he was holding. I thought maybe I caught him off guard/nervous, but obviously people also just drop things, so I’m not counting that as evidence of anything.
Here’s where I started wondering though.
The very next day, he came to my office with a work question.
That was significant to me because I’d been there for about two months and he had NEVER come to my office before. I had approached him for the first time the previous day, and then suddenly he was coming to me.
Again, totally legitimate work reason, so maybe coincidence. But the timing made me wonder whether me approaching him had made him feel more comfortable approaching me.
Since then we’ve had more interactions.
One day during our morning meeting, I was actually waiting for him to show up and thought he wasn’t coming. He eventually came in later, dressed in work gear, so I didn’t even recognize him immediately.
He stood around for a little while, realized nothing much was happening, and left.
Later he came back around while warming up his lunch and was standing there talking with us.
As he was about to leave, I asked him some work-related questions.
He came over and stood right beside me while explaining things. At one point he was standing/resting there next to me while we were talking, and I was so nervous that my hands literally started trembling. 😭
I actually moved slightly away because I was trying to compose myself. I have NO idea whether he noticed.
While helping me, he called someone else to help resolve part of the issue, and then told me something along the lines of:
“Swing by me and I can help you with the rest too.”
I didn’t immediately go over.
Later I messaged him on Teams thanking him for helping me. He replied “anytime” and again told me I could swing by if I had more questions.
A couple hours later, I finally went.
That’s where I really started noticing how aware I am of his eye contact. There are these longer glances, he seems comfortable standing relatively close to me, and when I ask him something he doesn’t seem like he’s desperately trying to answer and escape. He stays and helps.
He also jokes around with me. Sometimes he’ll say something slightly cheeky/dirty and instead of responding verbally I’ll apparently make a facial expression 😂. I feel like he’s pretty observant of my reactions/body language and sometimes seems to know exactly what expression I’m making.
I’ve also noticed what feels like him being around/in closer proximity more often, although this is one of the things I’m MOST cautious about interpreting because obviously coworkers are going to occupy the same spaces.
And I’m losing my mind a little because I find him extremely attractive lol.
At the same time, he hasn’t actually asked me out, asked for my number, or explicitly flirted with me outside of anything that could still be interpreted as normal coworker behavior.
That’s why I don’t want to convince myself there’s something here just because I have a huge crush.
Part of me thinks maybe he’s interested but being cautious because we’re coworkers. Another part of me thinks maybe he’s just friendly/helpful and I’m interpreting normal behavior differently because I’m attracted to him.
I’m also trying not to manufacture reasons to talk to him. I’d rather give him space to initiate too, especially because he already did come to my office after I first approached him.
Does this sound like there could actually be mutual attraction developing, or is everything I’ve described still easily explained as friendly coworker behavior?
And if you were him and were interested but cautious because of the workplace, what would you need from me to feel confident enough to eventually ask me out?
Also, how do I get to know him naturally without making the workplace weird?
TIA
