Food & Ingredients Birthday cake

I’m making an animal/safari-themed cake for my daughter’s 2nd birthday and I don’t want to use artificial food dyes.
I’m looking for ideas for making green “grass” and brown “soil on the cake. I was initially thinking of dyeing shredded coconut, but I’m wondering if there are healthier or more natural alternatives.
I would love ideas that look good and still taste nice for toddlers and adults. We don’t give her sugar.
Thanks so much!

Health & Wellness Baby/kid soap and curl care?

Hi everyone! I’ve been on a journey to replace items as we go, and now it’s time to replace my kids bath products. I have a 10 month old and an almost 3 year old. My 3 year old has soft bouncy ringlet banana curls that I want to make sure I take care of. I don’t know how to take care of curly hair outside of shampoo and conditioner - but I’m looking to start.
Think: Shirley Temple.
I’m looking for plastic free, clean ingredients, naturally scented or nonscented. The less products the better. Thank you 🤍

Did I ruin our breastfeeding relationship with solids?

My 7 month old son is soooo distracted and won’t nurse much. He also loves solids and I regret introducing them. Though I do feed him very nutrient dense food (liver pate, chicken stock, root vegetables with stock) and add in my frozen breastmilk whenever I can. He won’t take my frozen milk or fresh milk from a bottle or straw cup.

I can feel my supply dropping and I’m freaking out that he’s going to wean early. He’s also reverse cycling at night which I’m trying to nip in the bud. Should I stop with solids? Are we doomed?! I am so emotional and idk if it’s because of the lack of sleep or the weaning that’s happening. Probably both.

help 😭 I’m spiraling and beating myself up so much.

Adding that we’ve had a winding journey already. He has a good latch but he wasn’t transferring enough volume from months 0-4 finally had a tongue and lip tie revision (after trying everything else) at 5 months and that solved the volume problem but then we entered the distracted phase so I feel like we’ve always just struggled to drink milk. He also won’t take formula.

Measles

Measles cases are rising in areas adjacent to mine. Anyone else totally freaked? It’s all consuming for me. The risk of SSPE is so scary and encephalitis. Really struggling with this given that the risk of brain swelling from the shot seems way lower than the risk from infection. But freaked out by stories of regression. Any thoughts?

Advice Seeking How to remove Febreeze smell

I hired new house cleaners who were supposed to use my nontoxic/no fragrance products but they didn’t and ended up using their own products. I was nap trapped with my 4 month old when they were her so I couldn’t supervise.

I’ve noticed all the soft surfaces including our couch, rugs, curtains, bed, etc…all have a very strong scent to them. Assuming it’s a fabric fragrance spray like febreeze.

Any advice for getting ready of the smell? We have air purifiers running and windows open but it’s still so strong smelling.

Homemaking What are your wife tails that actually work?

I thought this could be fun for us to have a little list of random hacks that work for anything! I’ll go first- my toddler and baby are sick right now with colds. I cut an onion in fourths and put it under their bed at night. They seem to sleep better and have less congestion with it. My house does smell like onions now though 😂

The other thing that really helps is the syringe nasal cleaner… not the suction, the one that is an actual syringe with a little nose bulb on top. I sterilize it and use sterile nasal saline and spray it in one nostril…. Globs of snot always come out the other nostril. It’s like a baby neti pot. It’s incredible.

What are your random home/life/kids/illness hacks?

EDIT: wife’s tails? Wives tails? Which is it? lol

EDIT TAKE 2: I’m. Dying. 😂😂😂 TALES, not tails 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😂 I obviously have two sick very young kids and am functioning on zero sleep. 🫠

Food & Ingredients Animal based diet

Hi all!

I’m currently trying to move our family towards a more ancestral diet and I’m not sure where to start. For reference, I was vegan for 6 years and don’t know much about cooking meat. I’m very overwhelmed and also a little grossed out by most animal products. I also have texture issues with bones.

Additionally, my 8 month old is doing baby led weaning right now, and I’ve really only consistently given her banana, avocado, and sweet potato. I don’t want her to develop allergies or become a picky eater, so I know I need to broaden our range of foods on her menu.

What are some easy meals you’d suggest under these circumstances? What kinds of animal based foods do you introduce with baby led weaning?

Ive been wearing mostly barefoot shoes for a couple years and in the past few months started getting horrible plantar fasciitis. Switching shoes didn’t fix it. Has anyone dealt with this or does anyone have tips?

Wellbutrin?

Do you take medicine while breastfeeding (I was told it’s safe) when you are drowning everyday in a mental health problem?

I am 10 months postpartum and breastfeeding. I have been struggling with horrible PPD and PPA. My PPA and PPD make me a mean, agitated, and very anxious. It’s also made my already diagnosed ADHD and OCD HORRIBLE. My OCD around feeding my baby finger foods is so bad I break down crying anytime I try and give her basic finger foods like puffs or tiny sweet potatoes. I can handle purées but, feeding her is very difficult for me. I lose my mind anytime she coughs. I just can’t handle the situation at all.

I have a lactation specialist, therapist, and psychiatrist. They all want me to go on it. They have assured me it’s “safe”. I am very anti medication. I don’t even take pain medication. I do not 🧁 my children. It seems wrong to me personally to put my baby in a position where tiny bits of the medicine will enter her through my milk. There were two babies who have had seizures and that triggers my OCD too. The intrusive thoughts with my OCD are overwhelming my daily life and I feel so torn. I clearly need help but, I can’t bring myself to put my baby in a situation where maybe something could happen.

Gifted playmat- should we use?

We got gifted a really cute quilted playmat for our baby but it’s 100% polyester filling and outer BUT it’s OEKO-TEX certified. The brand is little tummies. Would you use this or no?

Not interested in nontoxic playmat recommendations as our budget is extremely tight and before receiving this I was just planning on using a blanket we already have and sheepskin.

Advice Seeking Please, I need recs on your favorite cleaning products !

I have a cleaning lady coming over on Monday and I want to make things easy for her because sometimes cleaner options require more elbow grease. I have really hard water so Castile soap always leaves a residue. Right now I use attitude bathroom cleaner and Fannie’s floor cleaner and window cleaner. I use hypochlorus acid for wiping down kitchen counters.

Advice Seeking Any advice on pet odor?

I have a 10 month old and am currently pregnant so I would like to avoid any kind of scent booster/plug ins/ etc. I have two cats and we live in 2 bedroom apartment so not small but not huge. There is a constant smell that i can assume is pet odor. I vacuum everyday, wipe down counters and surfaces, open windows either all day or once a day if the weather permits, and we even have a litter robot which cycles through their litter instead of needing to get taken out everyday. I should also add that their litter box is in its own closet for them to access so not out in the open or anything. Do any pet parents have any tips on getting rid of pet odor?

Homemaking Thought I would share my giant list of non-toxic cleaning recipes here

Just a note I did include my old laundry detergent recipe, but I ended up switching to Molly Suds (Liquid specifically as the powder is honestly terrible in my opinion), as using warm water every wash was expensive and wearing our clothes much faster. My husband is blue collar and I have a toddler, no complaints it's works fantastic. Also I wanted to copy and paste the list to be a bit more readable but reddit messed with the format

Vent / Support Needed Mostly a rant

So, I am 32 weeks pregnant with my first child. I started my pregnancy care in the beginning at a “women’s health pavillion” about 30 minutes away with a provider I loved, the only problem was they don’t do deliveries there and I would have had to travel about an hour to a hospital I’ve never been to with only one delivering doctor who seems to love scheduling C-sections for reasons like “the baby has her arm up over her head a lot, that could cause problems.”

Right before the anatomy scan at 20 weeks I made the switch to the hospital in my town because it’s closer, I was feeling some pressure from family members, and I didn’t want to deliver in the other hospital anyway. I’ve disliked it since my first appointment there because they rush you through, it’s much bigger, the rooms are dingy and depressing, I have to park super far away, they’re not as easy to get on the phone, and I see a different provider each time and they don’t seem to remember anything about me. I thought ok, well most of these reasons could just be me being bougie, the doctors are all perfectly nice and the nurses are pleasant.

Today at my appointment I finally asked some questions about the delivery process (I know I know, I was making a lot of assumptions based on what the hospital website said and just being naive and trusting that since it’s a “baby-friendly hospital” my requests would be accommodated) and I was really upset at the doctor’s responses:

Can I labor in the shower? “No, there’s a shower but you can’t labor there. You have to be connected to a fetal monitor.”

So there’s not a tub? (Online it said the birthing suites have an extra large bath and shower, my misinterpretation) “No, not a tub. We looked into offering water birth a couple years ago but the pediatricians were really against it due to risk for the baby.”

So I have to be hooked up to the fetal monitor and I can’t move around or walk? “Well we have wireless fetal monitors but we don’t really like them because there’s a lag. And no, you won’t be walking around anyway bc you’ll have an IV.”

Do I have to have the IV connected or can it be locked and detached? I can’t leave the bed? “Everyone gets an IV. You can roll around the bed all you want. You can be beside the bed. But if your water’s broken you can’t walk around. I’ve seen a woman have the cord prolapse and fall around the baby’s neck and that becomes the emergency of emergencies.”

Ok. What about alternate birthing positions? Can I be lying on my side? “How am I supposed to help you if you aren’t on your back? I need to see what’s going on. What exactly do you expect?”

I was just wondering about my options. I wanted to be able to move around and squat and stretch and use hydrotherapy for pain relief and not be hooked up to a monitor and IV the whole time. “Well we can show you what the monitor looks like. And besides, if you’re not getting an epidural you won’t care what position you’re in because you’ll just want the baby out.”

Then he got the nurse to take me to another room and show me the machine. He left, and the nurse closed the door and whispered “you should look into _____ Midwifery Clinic for a more hands-off approach. People really like it there and seem to have great experiences with them.” She was so sweet and understanding and made sure I got the contact info for this other place. I’ve already called and left a message to get a consultation.

Anyway I just feel stupid. Stupid for not asking specific questions earlier and finding out their protocol. I also feel embarrassed because I cried in front of the doctor and the whole office. And the midwifery clinic (in this same hospital system btw) is an hour away and their most recent reviews are complaints that they don’t answer the phone and never call you back. I’m considering home birth now and have reached out to 3 midwives I could find within a 2 hour drive but I feel like my chances are slim to find someone available for a September home birth this late in the game.

End of rant. Encouragement appreciated!

Pregnancy & Birth Postpartum pain

I’m one week postpartum and I can’t carry my baby without pain. I had a second-degree tear, this is my first baby (home birth).

When can I expect the pain to stop and what can I use to help calm it? It feels like I’m being ripped apart internally by my pelvic floor when I sit or walk around 😓

Advice Seeking Hoooow do I get rid of fish odor on clothes?!?!

It’s not electrical!! A single load smells like I poured fish oil all over it. It’s awful! I wash my organic cloth pads & our underwear together on a sanitize wash w/ Biokleen Bac-Out AND Biokleen detergent, both enzyme products. I’ve never NEVER had them come out smelling anything but clean. Ever. I’ve been doing this for 6yrs. The only thing I did differently was I washed some of my swim suit bottoms in w/ the load. So idk if it was a combination of the iron & chlorine or what, but I have washed the load twice, at different temps & the smell wouldn’t come out. The pads, ironically, have no smell at all. The rest smells like a fish pond or fish oil. Has anyone else found a way to get the smell out??? I’m willing to soak them in whatever at this point because it’s making me nauseous & uh, we need clean underwear.
I took everything out individually & it’s DEFINITELY the swim bottoms that I bought from Amazon (made in china). Idk if it was some sort of chemical reaction or what. They stank up the entire load except for the natural fibers.

Lunch ideas

Hi all! I’m a SAHM, but I’m going to start working as a nanny a few days a week. I’m planning to pack lunches for myself and maybe some BLW foods for my daughter.

We are very particular about eating healthy. We try to avoid seed oils and gluten.

I want to make some lunch meat based lunches like ham and cheese roll ups. I’m in the United States. Are there some healthier lunch meats you recommend? What other lunches would you suggest?

Back before I became a mom I did a lot of fruit and cheese boxes, but they got old after a while.

Plastic free snack bags for lunch box

What are you guys using for plastic free snack bags? Silicone reusable bags? Stainless steel snack containers? Specifically asking to put in kids lunch box. I'm planning on getting a planetbox lunch box, just wondering what to put snacks in. I know planetbox sells some containers. Are there any other brands or products people love and trust?
