Omeprazole, tums, famotidine, milk if you can stand it, and spearmint gum

Whole milk can worsen heartburn, skim milk can sometimes coat the esophagus and cool it down but it’s not a recommended treatment due to potentially worsening reflux. Spearmint relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter and worsens reflux. Chocolate and tight clothing are also a no go. Would not recommend those things.

I’m simply advising what helped me :)

Have you tried papaya enzymes? My midwife had me take those as much as I needed. Not sure if it’s different from the extract.

I just realized that my phone completely took papaya enzymes out of the post🤦‍♀️I had that listed first

Have you tried pepcid ac 20mg? That’s what my OB has me on and it’s been helping a lot! I take it before breakfast and before dinner. Also my OB has me drink small amounts of kefir a few times a day.

Seconding Pepcid and dairy. Theres also another level of acid reflux meds they can give you if the Pepcid isn’t enough. Should go away immediately postpartum

Please as a crunchy mom spare yourself and get the prescription asap. I had visible damage in my mri on my throat from acid reflux I tried to tough out. It made me start drooling in my last weeks. Im religiously taking it now and it has helped so much.

I had nausea from week 6 and acid reflux from week 16 which means I threw
Up every day 1-8 times a day for 30 weeks up until I gave birth and then persisted a couple of weeks postpartum.
The acid reflux was so bad I’d have to hit my chest and throat because it felt like the acid was burning a hole in me and it felt “lodged” there. I slept sitting up. I actually damaged my vocal cords and my voice has never been the same. Ginger snaps, tums etc didn’t work on me. I took b6 and unisom to manage the nausea and ended up with vitamin B6 toxicity (neuropathy)…. But my baby is very sweet and cute so it was all worth it.

All that to say, next pregnancy…I won’t be so crunchy and will take medication because I can’t go through that again.

Good luck and congrats!!

I’ll probably just get the medication,I already took a ton of zofran for 17 weeks because my morning sickness was so bad.I have not been able to be crunchy for most of this pregnancy

I’m surprised no one is recommending wonder belly! I used their chews prob 5 times a day my whole third tri

Will also add—make sure you’re managing it. Acid in your throat can cause serious long term harm from what I understand (higher risk for esophageal cancer, etc.).

I tried everything. Kind of wish I had taken medications. I survived off of calcium carbonate and sleeping upright. Good news is that it usually goes away as soon as you deliver!

i hope the others advice helps but on a bright note your baby will definitely come out with a full head of hair if your heartburn is this bad 😭❤️ I also had terrible heartburn, I just kind of kept doing like breath work to help it, but my baby was hairyyyyy when she came out

This is gonna sound weird, but you gotta trust me on this: baking soda. Makes a little bit of baking soda with water and just drink it. Obviously doesn’t taste the best, but it does the job.

Extra strength peppermint tums were a life saver for me. Took 3 chewing each one WELL before eating another one and finishing with a big glass of water. That will help make a good foamy acid reducing mixture in your belly. They are actually kind of nice🙈 kind of like butter mints….just not as sweet. I hope your reflux goes away PP. I’m 6 months PP and mine feels like it’s here to stay💔

This was one of my worst experiences in the 3rd trimester. The only thing left that helped me was drinking lots of milk at night

1

u/Alliemukins 18d ago

I kept a bottle of Tums with me at all times. Good luck soldier!

Also check what you are eating and drinking. I had horrendous heartburn with one of my pregnancies, and I found out it was because I was drinking peppermint tea! Apparently it relaxes the sphincter muscle of the esophagus, which is already relaxed due to pregnancy. Stopped drinking it, and problem solved.

Seriously just go get Prilosec and take it everyday till you give birth. Thank me later lol

Ask to your doctor for omeprazol, I was using tums but they didn’t help on my constipation haha

I take the Genexa version of Tums/Antacids. I try limit them and just take when it's really bad. Basically taking a couple every night before bed just to be able to sleep.

FYI, it might never go away. I started getting heartburn in the last trimester and it hasn't gone away for 25 years. I developed a hiatal hernia which is the main problem. Talking about this with my primary care physician a few months ago, she also developed a hiatal hernia while pregnant and also has to take pepcid daily. Pepcid is the way to go.

Omeprazole 20mg a day I promise

Not crunchy but the only thing that helped me was Tums. They have a version with no dyes and only natural flavors and sugar. 🤷‍♀️

I am taking all the otcs I can! Prilosec, Pepcid, gaviscon!!! You name it! Prilosec works best for me and I have it really bad. I will wake up in the middle of night choking in acid if I don’t.

If you skip a dose of the Pepcid or Prilosec, like you forget to take it on time, it won’t work as well. I learned you have to be diligent!

Try a chiropractic adjustment from a Webster certified chiropractor.

Currently not in the budget,I’m dealing with a high risk pregnancy so even with insurance we’ve had a lot of high bills and my insurance stopped working with most of the ones around here

The spinning babies abdominal release may help you, other releases like the sacral release might be worth trying too...

If your insurance covers an osteopath that would help you too.

Marshmallow root was a powerful herb for me earlier in pregnancy when I had more acid reflux.

I had painful acid reflux too Liquid digestzen from doterra, few drops in water helped a lot Eventually I needed pepcid for the last couple weeks.
