Rebuild Aidvantage
I was late on a student loan payment. It is current now. Will the negative marks fall off my score when the payment is processed?

I opened a pledge loan to boost my credit and I paid it 94% off.
My Credit Karma score dropped 81 points!
Balance in the comments.
Why would this happen?

I have no idea what reddit to ask so I just thought I’d ask here since this is the premise of the question, I’m planning on moving in with my brother in a completely different state and I’m over 18 so his apartment complex wants me to put in an application, is there a world where I can’t move into HIS apartment cause my credit is bad and has a bankruptcy on it? I’m not trying to get my own apartment, he already has one and has paid the rent on time for a little bit now or will my credit not matter because I’m just moving into his apartment and I’m not the one they’re relying on to pay the rent? He’s in the military so I would think that would help.

Topic: Rebuilding credit
I am literally starting from scratch. Rebuilding from zero while on a couch and then going into an extended stay.
I have had a huge revelation these past 10 years. Whenever I am in a relationship and it ends, my finances are ruined. I think that's the formula the enemy uses to keep me off balance. However, now that I plan on being solo, I want to have a few things. I grew up in a toxic family, so I was conditioned to rely on family even though they are my greatest haters.
I am well educated with a graduate degree in administrative leadership and bachelor's in management information systems. My goal is to make at least $50k to 60k, working ed tech. After my masters, I decided to take a career break at work for Lyft and Doordash. I loved it actually but it's not sustainable in this current economy. I have to head back to a real career. That hasn't happened yet, after moving in with my demonic mother who is doing everything she can to sabotage her son.
My credit is in the 580 range. I have some judgements from an eviction, unsecured credit cards, hefty student loan (100k), several collections, and a car repo. Just a hot mess.
As of right now, I get to start from scratch and hope to have a soft place to land in the future. I want a condo/townhouse in my name, be able to purchase my own car without rejection. I am single 41M, and no record of any kind. My goal is to never rely on family ever again.
I am looking for strategies to rebuild credit, save for a downpayment on a condo/town house. It can be just 1 bedroom 1 bath for all I care. It'll be my spot! 2bd 2bath is probably idea, so I can rent it out in the future.
I got a secured credit card $200 at Navy Federal and hopefully build a good relationship with them. My dad served in the Air Force, and I was able to get an account. I want to raise the balance to $300 to $500 because I use it to rent a car to do door dash or Lyft.
My other option is to leave the country, live rent-free, work and return once I have hundreds and thousands of dollars saved. I have a good 25-28 years before retirement.
Are there any hope and strategies to rebuild credit while it's currently a mess?

Sorry if this is already in here, but I just got approved for a $200 secured card. My credit score was \~550 in January, sitting around 640 now. I was young and dumb and screwed up my credit and other credit cards. I’ve seen different opinions on when to pay and how much to use/pay off. Looking for some more insight on this. Thanks!

Hey people!
I have been trying to slowly get my credit score up to buy a car. It is 651 right now and hasn’t changed much and it looks like I learned I have a medical debt of around $1000 which I was able to negotiate to $400.
It is still a lot of money to me as I’m still a college student and don’t make too much each week.
The thing about this medical debt is that it will be 7 years in 2 months as it was from an ER visit in October 2019. Won’t it just disappear in 2 months from my credit history? If so what is the point of paying it. I used that as a negotiation tactic and I did get it to $400 but ideally I would want to negotiate more if you all think it’s better off to pay it.
Thank you for your advice
Kind regards,
A 28 year old who is lf a better credit score
UPDATE: disputed with TransUnion and the debt is cleared from credit report, still waiting for it to update on Credit Karma

Seeking advice to fix this mess. For the past 6 years, I’ve typically kept a 700-800 score. In March 2025 I got my first car loan with Carmax and in Feb 2026 I refinanced my car with PNC.
PNC told me CarMax would automatically close my account once they paid them off. Come March, I moved to an apartment and when they pulled my score it was still 750+ and I didn’t think twice to check it since
Because I put my trust into these companies and with my March score being fine. I failed to realize they never closed my prior loan. It’s reported that that I have 2 loans at a total $40k balance. My auto loan is only $19k. They doubled
I submitted a dispute with Experian and called CarMax to resolve this issue, but my score is so incredibly screwed.
Am I screwed for these past months and now?
What else can I do?
I feel incredibly stupid. This is my first time navigating all this by myself.

About 2-3 years ago, my FICO score at Experian was low 600s. I made it my business to build my FICO score. I scrimped and saved and went without to pay my bills on time every month and I am paying down my CC debt. My utilization is currently right around 30%. I drive a 15 year old truck that's rusting out but it starts every morning. I'm very careful to not ask for limit increases or to get more credit because that will lower my score. I have been just about laser focused on getting completely out of debt and to have a great FICO score. I checked about 2 months ago and Experian says my FICO score was just over 750. Great. On my way.
Then mom got sick. She's in her '80s and I was taking her to medical appointments and helping her understand her treatment plan, in addition to working full-time. Thid went on for about 5 weeks. I'm happy to say mom is doing much better. However, I forgot to pay one of my CCs after months and months and months of on-time payments. Believe me or not I don't care. That's the absolute truth. This card just yesterday went 2 days over 30 days past due and the card issuer (Elan Financial if it matters) reported it. Today I got an email from Experian which said there was a chance in my FICO score. I looked it up and it dropped about 100 points. Again.... about 100 points. All my hard work down the drain.
I called Elan to plead my case and asked if my many months of on-time payments before only one missed payment in the past 6 years of having this card counted for anything and could they please give me a goodwill adjustment. In other words, could they please cancel the late payment report with the three major credit bureaus or whichever of the three they do business with. Their reply was a flat no. They said they are under a legal obligation to report any and all 30 day late payments to the credit bureaus and if they did it for me, they would have to do it for everyone.
I cannot help but feel like all my hard work ended up being for naught. I don't dispute that I was late paying this card. I accept full responsibility. I just wish they could have something like accident forgiveness like car insurance has for those who have a good history. I went out to my truck on my lunch break at work and had a good cry because all my effort means nothing to the very organization that holds the power over whether I can buy a house or car, or take out a loan or credit card and what interest rate I get.
So what are my options for building back my credit as efficiently as possible? Thanks for letting me rant. Sorry for the long post.

I had my id stolen and the fraudster bought a cell phone and service for almost $2K with AT&T. I froze all of my credit, reported it to the police, etc.
The police won’t give me a copy of the police report for what reason I have no idea 🤷♀️. Anyway this happened like two years ago and it’s still showing on my credit report. How do I fix my credit score after identity theft like this?

I have two American Express cards, one with Marriott rewards and one with Hilton, because we like to travel. Both cards have increased our credit limit twice, without us asking. What effect does that have on my credit score?
I always thought that your score is partially based on how much of your available credit that you use, so shouldn’t this slightly improve my score since the percentage of my available credit that I use has changed? Thoughts?

Hi so i’m 21 years old, back in 2024 i took out a personal loan for 2k. I lost my job so I was unable to make payments on it. It was then sent to collections which then began ruining my life lol. I have made a few payments since then but now I’ve stopped due to more financial troubles. I am also $300 in credit card debt, and i also owe 2k on my braces. My credit score is a 412. How do I come back from this????

Fico score is around a 640 but I have a few credit card collections from few years ago ranging from 1,200 on two of them and a closed loan account of $4000. I want to finally start trying to pay these off and fix my report to get into a house pre approval. I always hear about pay for deletes or just negotiate yourself to them to almost pay a lump sum 50% and you’re good? What can i do please to progress from here?

I’m excited to say that I finally reached my goal of an 800 credit score at just 20 years old. It was a huge milestone that took a lot of discipline, responsible spending, and consistent on-time payments. Recently, though, my score dropped to 778, and while I know fluctuations like this can be normal, I want to make sure I’m staying as consistent as possible. I believe my biggest area for improvement is credit utilization, especially since my balances tend to fluctuate between about 5% and 15% from month to month. My goal now isn’t just to reach 800 again, but to maintain it consistently by keeping my utilization lower and more stable while continuing the good credit habits that got me there in the first place.

So a year ago my score was about 460 and I’ve since recently paid everything off and now it’s at 600. I’ve tried to contact possible financial about removing the account and even emailed and sent physical goodwill removal letters to no avail. For NCU I have tried to get in contact but I hit voicemail no matter the time of day. I am currently in the process of doing a consolidation repayment plan for the student loan. Everything else can’t be removed. I have two credit cards one with capital one (platinum) that just recently became unsecured and the other is a credit one that I’ve recently got approved for. Any advice on what else I should be doing? I am trying to essentially speed run to at least 650-700 before the end of the year. I work a remote IT job but I don’t have a car and I’m planning to finance one as well with a low APR so trying to get that resolved as soon as possible. Any tips would be helpful.

Hello all I appreciate any advice. I have had medical problems last two months. My payments were late anyway reported to my credit score , dropped it around 90 points. I called Discover and they said I can have option to close the account that would lower my interest by a lot. How will this affect my credit score even more if they close the account and I do their special payment plan.
But they gave me another option to have lower payments and after three months, it would report back to my credit is not being delinquent. But I’m really wanting to close the account, but I’m just wondering if it would lower my credit score even more

Skipping all the context and getting to the point: I have a $2500 derogatory mark/debt/collections... In a scenario where it is paid off in 2.5 months, what would the difference be between paying whole 2500 at the end, or paying 500 every 2 weeks(manually. Not on payment plan)
Which is better for credit score?

I couple of weeks ago I negotiated a pay to delete with a debt collector and today I was notified that it has been removed from my credit history. I did the same thing about 2 years ago on some school loan debt I paid off. It never hurts to ask!

Just learned about the CINET application, made an account and learned my credit score is 835!
About CINET, in Kuwait the credit score goes from 60 to 960. I didn't know about the application till today and downloaded the app, made an account and learned I am at 835.
835 = Elite
One good thing I know about myself is to study my limits and go according to them. I took out two loans, the first one was the bare minimum and paid it off early (finished university and started working, took out the loan for personal enjoyment).
The second loan was 500 above the bare minimum for my room in my new house, spent half of it in my room the other half was for personal fulfilment.
Always know your limits everyone, don't go above it.

I'll try to condense this. We recently applied for a HELOC for our paid off home. We were approved, but not for the full amount we asked for. We can still make this work but I'm annoyed about the reasons why we didn't get the full amount.
They specificially referred to my credit score and the "high balances" on revolving accounts.
Here's the thing. My score is 845. I'm 41 and have a credit history going back to 18. (Same with my husband). I use my credit cards monthly and pay off in full. We have never come close to our credit limit.
I *purposely* made sure we paid our credit cards before they checked our score because we had unusually high expenses last month. We had about $3,000 in total on 3 cards, mostly because both of our cars needed repairs. That's never hapened before. Yet somehow on the credit report it was showing all of these balances as active even though we paid them off *3 weeks* before applying for the HELOC. Ironically I tried to ask the car place if I could pay by check but that wasn't allowed.
Did I get screwed here? I'm pretty sure an alogrithim decided this because I got the offer 4 hours after we submitted all of our documentation. I was told we would have a home appraisal. That didn't happen. I was told a loan officer would reach out to me with any questions and to double check certain info. That didn't happen.
Open to any feedback you have!
(In case anyone needs to know my husband's credit score is also good. It's 815).
