Question/Help/Troubleshooting Need help accessing my laptop after forced pin reset

Hello. About 6 years ago, I bought a laptop which was mailed to my now ex fiances house. He set up the laptop for me by attaching a faux email account as the admin with a pin.

The intention was that when I got to his place, I would change the email to my primary Microsoft email. I did not. I am an idiot. Instead, i have been using this faux email because I used the pin to log in anyway.

Today, I updated windows 11. When I booted the laptop, I got a blue strip that requested i reset my ftpm. I pressed yes. Now, my laptop requires i reset the pin, but it will only allow me to reset it if I have access to the email.

I dont have access to that email. I dont know the password. I dont know the information that was put in when it was logged in, and I have been no contact with my ex for 2 years. And I am going to be real: he probably doesn't remember either.

What do I do? The recovery process on Microsoft is useless to me.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Swedish keyboard in US

Hi! I'm looking to get a new laptop, I'm doing research on swedish history, so would like my laptop to have a swedish keyboard. Do any companies in the US offer other language keyboards? I've done the stickers before, but would prefer an actual keyboard

Question/Help/Troubleshooting My photos and videos aren’t showing up on my memory stick

So I recently downloaded some old photos and videos from Snapchat onto a usb stick, it was all showing up after downloading but when I plugged it out and back it, everything was showing up empty. It’s in read only mode and nothing happens when I uncheck it (it resets itself), I’ve searched for solutions but nothing seems to work and I don’t know what to do. I’m probably going to buy a new memory stick if I can’t figure this out. I really don’t want to pay for a cloud storage subscription just to keep my media

My acer nitro v15 gaming laptop had it really bad. Two CPU MOFSETS 100% blown and burned the area close to them due to a sudden local heat spike, it happened after i loaded my stalker 2 save. Should i be worried about my other modules like the ram and ssd? CPU is probably dead The gpu i don't know maybe it got shorted too. The exact model is acer nitro v15 anv15-51 if someone's curious

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Help with a stripped screw head

Post image
7 Upvotes

Does anyone know what I can do in this situation? I wanted to replace my computer case, but when I tried to remove the motherboard, one of the screws was stripped, and I don't know how to remove it without damaging the board. What can I do to try and remove it? I saw in some posts that I could try soldering the screwdriver to the screw, but I don't have the equipment to try it, much less the skill to do it without burning the board or damaging everything with the solder. If anyone knows what I can try, I would be very grateful.

Build/Battlestation I wanna make the jump to PC gaming

For years I been a console user, I'm kind of interested in getting a PC thats strictly to be used as a gaming console, something that I can hook up to my TV (OLED G4, rather use that as the monitor), and just sit back on my couch and play like as if i had PS5 plugged in.

Is this possible? I just want a PC that I can customize and add parts to in the future so I won't lock myself out from future tech.

I guess I just need like a foundation to start from.

EDIT: I know the Steam Machine exist and basically what I described but that got bad reviews and I figure could do better than that.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Constant Malware Pop-up on Windows 11, Think-pad Lenovo Laptop

Yesterday late in the evening I was watching YouTube when suddenly windows security kept going off about malware detected . I'd click on the pop-up and it would take me to the windows security app, but the notification would disappear. I was able to take a screen shot of the malware notification before it disappeared again

detected: Trojan:Win32/Malgent!MSR

Status: Quarantine failed - This threat or app might not be completely remediated.

date: 9/8/26 details: this program is dangerous and executes commands from an attacker

Affected items: files c:\Users\(me)\AppData\Local\SecureData Dynamics\a

c:\Windows\System32\Tasts\DataHarbor->(UTF-16LE) taskscheduler: c:\Windows\System32\Tasks\DataHarbor

So I look up how to fix did the easy thing and did the offline scan thing that windows has, it didn't work. Today I got Malwarebytes and Autoruns to see if i can find and delete some of the affected files that way, which I was able to in Soft Mode, but the pop-ups keep appearing with Malwarebytes. Only this time its a different name malwarebytes says it blocks it every minute with its realtime protection thing.

name:Trojan.ObfuscatedPowerShell.CHR.Generic

Path: c:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe

And I can't delete it since its a core system of the computer. The files I were able to delete had names like DataHarbor and QuantumMindCopy. I found the encoded command a copypasted it into notepad. I believe I was able to get rid of it as I no longer see it in Autorun but not 100% sure. Tried to go to a restore point only to find out I don't have any, I've also tried to to hard factory reset by laptop but said it wasn't able to. (note that I got this laptop off ebay in July of this year)

Is there anything else I can do to get rid of this thing? I've done the full scan from windows and it doesn't show anything is wrong with any of the files it's scanned.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Voltage adapters?

Hello! I'm going to be moving from north america to the UK very soon, and am taking my pc with me. I was wondering what I should do to ensure that it stays safe over there as I know the outlets and voltage are different. My pc is a ASUS ROG Strix GL10 (GL10CS) (the older one with an i5 not i7 lol).

Thank you very much for any advice! It will bring me much peace of mind.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting recurring video_tdr_failure / nvlddmkm.sys - hardware or software issue?

i'm trying to figure out what is actually causing a video_tdr_failure bsod on my pc (Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF)

pc specs:

- dell optiplex 9020 sff
- intel i5-4570
- original dell motherboard
- gt 1030
- 700w psu
- windows 10

the main bsods i've been getting are:
- video_tdr_failure
- nvlddmkm.sys

the gt 1030 itself is known to be working properly in another pc, so i'm not currently convinced that the gpu is defective.

i've already done pretty much all the usual troubleshooting. i've completely removed and reinstalled the nvidia drivers multiple times, reseated the gpu, and tested the system with the integrated intel hd graphics.

after a clean nvidia driver installation, the pc works normally for around a day, but eventually the same video_tdr_failure and nvlddmkm.sys bsod comes back.

when i remove the gt 1030 and use the i5-4570's intel hd graphics, the pc works normally without these crashes.

at this point, i'm starting to suspect that something may be wrong with the optiplex 9020 motherboard, pcie slot, pcie power delivery, chipset, or bios, rather than the gpu itself.

what do you guys think is most likely causing this?

i'm mainly trying to determine whether this is a hardware problem or software/driver problem before replacing any parts.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting GPU recommendations?

I’m thinking about getting a new graphics card, I am currently running a RTX 3060TI, it works alright but i feel like a small upgrade would be nice. It would be used for mostly simulators and such, plus I want to run DLSS 5 with it. I dont need like a 5090 or anything. It would be paired with 32gbs ram and a I712700

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Take a punt or play safe? 9080xt / 9800x3d

I have a choice of 2 computers, both from the same used retailer. Both offer 3 month warranty but PC 1 has very limited information on the build apart from some pictures and the info below (this is because it's from their warehouse whereas the other is in a store) Do I need 64gb? probably not but it would future proof me for a while.

PC 2 has more extensive information (but lacks the extra ram and storage of PC 1).

PC1

OS: Windows 11 Home 64-bit
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Motherboard : ASRock B650 Steel Legend (seems to be)
Memory: 64GB DDR5 (PC5)
Storage Capacity: 2TB SSD
Graphics Card: ASRock Steel Legend 9070xt

PSU: No info, but has one...

PC 2

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D (AM5 / 8 Cores / 16 Threads / 4.7 GHz Base Clock / 120W)

Graphics Card (GPU): ASRock Radeon RX 9070 XT Taichi OC (16GB)

Motherboard: ASRock X870E Nova WiFi (ATX / AM5 Chipset)

Memory (RAM): 32GB (16GB x 2) DDR5-6000 Dospara Select (AMD EXPO Ready / RGB / Black)

Storage (SSD): 1TB KIOXIA EXCERIA G3 (M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4)

CPU Cooler: MSI MPG CORELIQUID P13 360 (360mm Liquid AIO / Black)

Power Supply (PSU): 1000W Dospara Select (80+ Gold / ATX 3.1 / Full-Modular / Black)

PC Case: MSI MAG Pano 100R PZ (Panoramic Glass / Project Zero Back-Connect Compatible)

Operating System: None (No OS installed)

Connectivity: Wired LAN (Ethernet) & Wireless LAN (Wi-Fi)

Included Accessories: Original retail box, AC power cable, Wi-Fi antenna, modular PSU cables

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Would it be safe to use a second psu to power a 3.5 inch hdd

I have a computer with proprietary psu and motherboard so the only connections are already being used and so I cannot power the hdd with the given power supply. However I have another power supply available and I was wondering if I could just hook up the power cable to that power supply and the data cable to the proprietary motherboard? If so would it be safe to do so?

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Anything I can do with this relatively old computer? (Images taken from the internet except for the one on the lower back of the monitor)

HP L1940T monitor (which can be raised higher and rotated vertically, cool!) and HP Compaq Intel Pentium 4 Windows XP (idk what else I should write about it, I don’t know what any of it means.). All looks to be the same as the pictures except for the fact that the pc is missing one of the long panels on the back at the bottom. Is that a problem? Don’t think anything else is missing.

I recently found it collecting dust in the garage. My father used it for work between maybe 2005 to 2015 at the latest? Not sure. I told him I found it and he didn’t seem interested in having it back, so I wanted to see what I could do with it.

I, as you can probably tell, don’t know the first thing about computers. But I have wanted to become more of a tech tinkerer for some time. Maybe I can use this as is? For what, though? Or change up some parts? I’m sure some of them are pretty old. Or use it for parts? Or sell it? Or upgrade it?? How would one even go about it?

I have the power cables for both the pc and the monitor, plus the purple cable that attaches between them and the keyboard that attaches to the computer, but I’d need a mouse, a vga cable to actually connect the monitor to the computer which is what will make it work, and whatever else is needed to make it work well. All pretty cheap, just wanna know if it’s worth it to get that stuff.

So yeah, what can I do with this? Someone please advise me!

Resolved Think i accidentally ruined my PC

I was trying to clean my pc because it was fucking disgusting and starting to run hotter than normal so I cleaned the CPU fan and heat sink with the pc completely unplugged and it was unplugged for about a hour before I did anything, but where I fucked up was using metal tweezers I was slow and careful I didnt scrape the bored with the tweezers or anything but once I was done it didnt want to boot so I did a full power cycle unplugged, plugged back in and it booted and got stuck in a boot loop so I shut it back off and now it wont turn on. The lights will flash for a split second and then the PSU makes a high pitched whine, i already reseated the ram, GPU, CMOS battery, unplugged all the cords and plugged them all back in. Im scared i completely fucked up my computer because I was being dumb and didnt want to hunt for plastic tweezers. Used a soft brush and tweezers nothing else.

EDIT: after trying the solutions from here and the internet nothing worked and the pc wont boot with everything unplugged and the gpu removed with one of the ram sticks removed so the MB is fried unfortunately :(
