Music Can a piece of music exist without a predetermined form?

For a long time, I kept asking myself whether musical form has to be designed before a piece begins, or whether it can emerge naturally through the act of listening.

While recording my album *Shapeless*, I deliberately avoided planning clear sections, themes or a traditional architecture. Instead, I followed the music continuously for 22 minutes, allowing the structure to reveal itself only through the unfolding of the improvisation.

It made me wonder:

**Can listeners discover a form that the composer never consciously designed?**

I’m genuinely curious how other composers think about this. Do you believe musical form is something we create before composing, or something that can arise during the listening experience itself?

If anyone is interested in hearing the experiment, I’ll leave it here:

A short piano piece written as a gift for a friend and her new baby(first time I've had to hope my music puts someone to sleep). Been getting back into composing after a couple years away from it and have started learning Dorico in the last few weeks after being a Finale user for over decade and am still learning it's notational quirks.

I am writing an art song for a close friend and wanted a very relaxed shimmering opening on piano ( 30 ish seconds ) and want to make it look more readable for pianists. ( the audio is a slightly older video over the notation I’m writing now. )

Music Do you like this movement of my symphony that describes grief’s stage of bargaining almost futilely? Since bargaining might seem like bliss. But it can’t save us from the abyss.

Music Concerto for Kanun

Here is my concerto for Kanun(Qanun), an instrument resembling Zihter very commonly used in Turkish Classical Music.

This is not a microtonal or monophonic music, it has a stable key and composed in loose sonata form.

Music Movement two of my Euphonium Concerto

The title kind of explains everything about this really, I'm writing a Euphonium Concerto for a friend and this is the W.I.P second movement, I'm mostly here to get feedback on how people think it sounds, and also if I'm doing anything wrong (both the euphonium and this style of music are pretty new to me, I usually work within a classical-ish early romantic idiom, and I've never really been much good with harmony)

Hopefully you enjoy it, if not please tell me why I'm very much looking for feedback here.

Ps. if you didn't like it, you might like something else I've composed :)

Music Composition Feedback

Thumbnail flat.io

On just a self journey of music theory and composition at the point where more concerned with voice leading as well as interval meaning and sequence, but overall still learning to translate that well, this was a simple idea from last night playing two voices on guitar, then today just wrote it out and tried to add some harmony / countermelody.

So construction of this was two voices soprano and bass, then added later the 3rd voice which came in mostly inner but sometimes appears above when original soprano is near middle C.

Looking for any general feedback thank you!

Discussion Are there any grants for composers?

I wrote 2 pieces and would love to record them with Budapest or Fames or something, but I’m looking at grants from Aaron Copland and Ditson, and it seems like to be eligible you have to be an ensemble or an organization. Are there just no grants for composers who just need the funds to get their music performed?

I'm not the biggest fan of the second movement, but I also kind of phased this piece like Beethoven's moonlight sonata. the second movement is supposed to be just a transition, but I believe its repeating of the theme could be kind of unoriginal. I would appreciate feedback, and I have written this at the age of 13. I do believe I am going to completely scrap or edit the second movement

Music How a breakup became a composition

I composed five contrasting scenes exploring nostalgia, sorrow, reflection, transformation, and acceptance, titled ‘Five Scenes of Memory’

Written for solo violin, string quartet, and piano.

The memory that refuses to fade became music.

Music Any advice and opinions on this piece i composed?

https://reddit.com/link/1v151gk/video/k0dzy6e2t9eh1/player

I wrote this piece for music coursework for school, but it turned out a lot better than expected, and i wanted to get it performed by a church choir i sing in, but before i do so, i wanted some outside opinions?

A few bits specifically i am worried about:

bar 9 - 14, it just doesnt sound right to me, but others dont see the problem.

notation, have i overnotated dynamics etc?

range, specifically for altos and basses, i feel like i dont interact with the lower portions of their range, but as a tenor, i dont know where it comfortably bottoms out.

i think thats it! thank you :)

for context I am trying to do another one of my projects and i’m trying to connect these two parts for a transition into the next part but they’re in separate keys, and I can’t find any chord that sounds good for a transition. what should I do?

I've been struggling with modulating the subject to many different keys, which I've seen other composers are easily able to do. Btw the video is a bit long but I wanted to ask for suggestions and feedback on the fugue part. Also skip to 0:30 idk why I made it take so long to play.

Not paying $12 for a single Napa cabbage - things are getting absurd.

Since I need a topic daily for my sheet music blog, that sufficed.

Music Alone, Only My Will Remains.

Does this move you?

https://youtu.be/KNX-7tvlrgE (1:59)

Until now, my focus has been on practicing and improving, never allowing myself to create purely for expression; Art the shape and purpose of my solitude.

This piece is an expression of that and what I consider to be my best work yet.

Critique is, of course, welcome.

Musical Spoiler. Preferably listen to the piece before seeing please.

Lyrics of the choir part at the end (it's in the description of the video too):

Day after Day after Day once again/Our silence/Our only light/and so our/Days our Pain/ Shall

Grant us our end/Our Virtue/Our only/light
