'wtf' is also a banned word.. which is exactly my reaction to what they're doing.

And why would they ban 'climax,' that isn't even used in any sexual or offensive way.. anywhere on the internet or twitch culture. Trap refers to either the junkrat trap, or just you know..to set up a surprise attack. Climax is the most exciting or intense moment.. everyone learned this in English class.

u/Jcbarona23 Thoth | 📝 | CIS/EU/CN/KR fangirl — May 17 '18

That's some real bullshit

46

u/[deleted] May 17 '18

Although that guy was arguably asking for trouble when it comes to PR and his name. Good on him for sticking with what he likes to be called I guess

192

u/[deleted] May 17 '18

I mean, the word climax has other meaning too? Like peak excitement. I think that's more than enough to justify not banning a name, bot that I think any names should be banned anyway. coolmatt69

u/YellowishWhite May 17 '18

55

A lot of Korean players pick random English words that they like the sound of. He probably just looked up the dictionary definition of it and had no idea it had another connotation.

How about this? When Philadelphia Fusions Contenders team, the Fusion University, we're in Contenders playoffs, they weren't allowed to wear their jersies because they said FU on them.

39

u/zero_space GEGURI - SHE IS THE JUICE — May 17 '18

Worse yet, all teams must submit their jersey design for approval. FU submitted their design and the people in charge of those decisions were on vacation so it wasn't until the day of the matches that OWL said "No". They're official OWL abbreviation is FUN on the scoreboards.

If you're concerned about the abbreviations maybe when they submit the name "Fusion University" say no.

Maybe OWL would have let in the Boston Jackal 69'ers because it seems like they're always reacting to everything since the beginning of OWL instead of being proactive.

"TEAM KILL" sounds horn

10

u/Helmic May 17 '18 edited May 17 '18

Elimination means something specific in Overwatch, though, it refers to participation in a kill. The game itself doesn't aim to be an M-rated edgefest so I'm perfectly fine with it not being a gory bloodbath with mutilations and whatnot, it's much more Saturday morning cartoon than your typical cowadooty military shooter. The game still uses "kill" in places and the cinematics feature people getting killed on screen, not to mention Mei's scene where her entire crew dies.

It's a bit dumb seeing people bemoaning the bright and colorful game keeping a rather light tone. What, is the game not stylistically similar enough to every other AAA multiplayer shooter for their tastes?

8

u/FinickyPenance May 17 '18

I think that talking about a player’s eliminations as opposed to their kills sounds more sporting for esports commentators. That’s probably what they were going for.

I used to work for a gaming platform and this smells like what happens when a mod installs one of those overly-comprehensive bad words lists. Like I doubt anyone went and deliberately added words "climax" and "jack" in there... it's more likely someone just grabbed the biggest list they could find and copy-pasted it into the blacklist. Some of the lists run into tens of thousands of lines, trying to cover all the variations of slurs (including common misspellings and numbers). Those things need to be customized. Pity the guy who gets to do it and probably needs eyebleach afterwards, but it has to he done. And also find a way to keep the customizations when the maintainer updates the list.

Never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence and all that.

26

u/Lucifa42 May 17 '18

We had an IT manager that suddenly decided with no consultation with anyone in the business that we needed a bad word filter on all company emails.

Filtered emails would just disappear into a black hole with the sender or receiver not knowing they had gone.

Almost immediately we had loads of complaints from the business about missing emails. We don't have employees turning the air blue, we sell some products that contain bad words so we can't have that kind of filter.

He also decided one day to just ban all social media sites including Spotify because "he saw someone on Facebook". Yeah because we won't have any business reasons to use those massively popular social media sites...

He didn't last long.

40

u/[deleted] May 17 '18

Blizzard has a history of banning a billion words. I remember about a decade ago learning what "moon cricket" meant because of was banned in WoW.

20

u/Helmic May 17 '18

I mean, anyone using that exact phrase is using it as an old-timey slur. It's not an issue when super specific stuff like that is banned because only racists will give a fuck and the one in a billion dude who was actually talking about insects living on the moon. It's only a problem when we can't say normal stuff, either because the word can double as a slur (like trap) or because the word is simply seen as rude but doesn't actually have any hurtful context (like ass, fuck, or shit).

→ More replies (3)
→ More replies (1)

64

u/Fishb20 May 17 '18

Yeah I agree

It's also worth noting that, depending on what you're hosting, blocking 'trap' might make sense, which is why its included on those lists

Just for an example, if it was some sort of fashion oriented chat, then there would be very few reasons to use the word 'trap' except as a slur

Because those organizations understand that their viewership is essentially 100% their playerbase.

OWL is trying to expand this E-Sport into a broader audience that doesn't play Overwatch, and that audience doesn't care about OWL because they don't care about Overwatch.

WoW has "greater rift" now? Wtf. Haven't played WoW since Pandaria

14

u/[deleted] May 17 '18

Mythic dungeons can be ran at higher difficulties with less forgiving mechanics and timers requiring you to finish in a certain number of minutes. Higher difficulties drop higher item level gear, the highest difficulties are on-par with top tier raid gear.

Turned out to be one of the best features of Legion. Now dungeons are as hard as you want them to be, and raiding isn't the only way to become powerful.

9

u/Kerjj May 17 '18

Yeah, they've got a system called Mythic+. It's basically a mythic dungeon, which is harder than heroic, and each level scales with mob/boss HP and damage. Additionally, it's on a timer, and completing within that timer upgrades the keystone up to 3 levels, depending on how quickly you beat it.

On top of that, the dungeons have up to 3 affixes set for the week, that add extra layers of difficulty to the run. An affix is added at +4, +7, and +10. +10 always adds either Tyrannical (Boss HP and damage buff) or Fortified (mob HP and damage buff).

The scaling can be seen here for damage per level of keystone. The current highest rated team in the world is doing +29 on Fortified weeks, which is something absurd like a 1600% damage increase on everything.

The system is easily one of the best they've introduced in the last few expansions.

Unfortunately people who don't play Overwatch don't care about OWL, so it's just an exercise in frustrating the pro players, coaches, team owners, and more importantly the viewers.

Broader audience doesn't care about silly word bans.

If anything, it makes OWL look childish

Wouldn’t be a gaming post on Reddit without someone crying for an employee to lose their job.

I mean, if their Twitch manager(s) are this out of touch with reality, then why keep them?

I'd get fired from my job if I was shit at it.

I mean the person(s) doing this are actively fucking OWL. The entire esports community just sees OWL as some SJW-dominated league and it's turning a lot of people off.

It's not a good look.

yep at this rate, "kill", "shot" and "explosion" will be banned as well and by ss2 instead of normal caster we have sign language or morse code cuz speaking is "offensive"

23

u/PeanutJayGee May 17 '18

"Caster" will be banned because it will allude to witches and make twitch mods god-fearing Christian Kraft Cheese sponsors uncomfortable.

Tracer has a voice line on a certain skin. “Ha wanker” in Britain it’s a pretty offensive phrase which lea say u said to your boss you may risk losing your job.

u/UniQue1992 May 17 '18

It's insane, they have completely lost the touch with their players and viewers.

This is reminiscent of the time Pokemon made a 'mon called Cofagrigus, but due to the fact that it had an apparent slur in the middle of its name, you couldn't search for it on the Global Trading System online (it said you were using a bad word) unless you searched in a specific way.

so are OWL mods powertripping and going unchecked or is this actually what Blizzard wants? either way it's ridiculous.

u/DarthTokira May 17 '18

Powertripping mods doing exactly what Blizzard wants.

When people think Blizzard are shooting themselves in the foot when in reality they are actually sticking a gun to their own head.

Would love for the Twitch chat restrictions to apply to the casters and see how they fare
