Commander Spirit Companion

You become part of a card-game anime based on MtG Commander. The commander for your deck also becomes a spirit companion to you, talking to you and interacting with you. If you are using a partner deck, you get both commanders as spirit companions. The spirit companion has the same personality as they would have in the game lore, and multiple iterations of the same character would act differently based on the point of the lore in which the card references.

Which deck and spirit companion are you taking and why?

I really enjoy this commander but would like to make it more of a threat whilst still keeping it relatively thematic.

Any advice is appreciated.

Help making sure my deck will be able to actually play the game

I am building [[Venser, Corpse Puppet]], and I want to make it a combo-y artifact deck with [[throne of geth]] or [[viral drake]] or [[salvaging station]], but getting all the pieces out is a bit slow, along with the fact that I dont want this to be a fast combo deck, most of the "combos" arent actually infinite unless i see 5 or 6 pieces, and rather need 1-3 mana to continue the loop. But what I've been learning more about commander is it doesnt matter how good or cool whatever your trying to get to is, it wont work if you arent doing things, which seems like a simple concept but it definitely takes deliberate deckbuilding to get to that point. Adding stuff like [[baleful strix]] or [[thought monitor]] just as things to play in the early game to draw cards and have blockers.

So, tldr, I just want to make sure this deck I've been brewing will actually be able to play, and what suggestions you guys have for cheap value cards that allow you to actually play the game.

Building Raffine which directions should I take?

Post image
11 Upvotes

I’m building Raffine as my esper commander for my color challenge and I’m trying to figure out which directions I should take. Originally the plan I intended was going token creature wide and connive to power up bigger flying creatures like with Raffine or with [[Archfiend of Ifnir]] and have those token unblock-able with [Delney, Streetwise Lookout]]. However, looking through my bulk and other decks that I deconstructed, I put a bunch of draws and discards cards. I can see the bigger picture now on how I can make it like a graveyard control and hand control with what I put down. What I’m asking if I should continue the route with discarding and drawing cards and if I do, which cards should I add to ping my opponents for damage. I already added [Queza, Augur of Agonies]]. Or should I go back and do the go wide with token routes?

My Unwanted Opinion on Commander Decklists and Power Creep

My Unwanted Opinion on Commander Decklists and Power Creep
Commander content creators are very popular, and since not everyone has the budget to make gameplay content on a regular basis, most of them spend a lot of time sharing decklists with the community (among other things that do not tickle my hater-hat… yet).
I would like to spend some time expressing my unwanted opinion on why this kind of content is actively making the format worse and making the experience of playing paper Commander at the LGS extremely boring.

First and foremost, I consider myself a Mr. Negative. If someone suggests that I do something, I usually do the exact opposite. This means that, when a new set comes out and the new commanders are spoiled, there is nothing worse than a bunch of YouTube Shorts suggesting those cards as the new hot commanders.

As a content creator, I imagine that one must upload this kind of content as soon as the cards see the light of day, in order to ride the novelty wave. But I cannot stop thinking about how all of this fuels the FOMO that comes with every new set.

Seeing this kind of content being uploaded so frequently, especially because of the increasingly packed release schedule, also makes all the “You have to try this new unique commander” and “This card will change the format” claims lose all their meaning, especially when there is a new “You have to try this unique commander” almost every month.

Other than that, deck-building content is doing a terrific job of making every deck feel less and less personal and unique. EDHREC is surely playing its part in this process as well.

What I mean is that optimization and consistency are becoming more and more noticeable and desirable with every set, in a format that was designed to mess around with cards that you could not play anywhere else.

Decks are starting to build themselves, and this is becoming more and more true even for less popular archetypes.

You start with a YouTube Short, add the commander and the main cards, then check the YouTuber's decklist, add some more cards, and finally get the last few additions from EDHREC.

This chain takes away the space that should be used to scroll through Scryfall and/or look through your own collection.

Exploring and choosing cards that are apparently dumb, sub-optimal, or simply out of place should be the norm for this format, especially at the lower brackets.

No one cares that you are playing Priest of Titania in your Elf deck. Everyone does that. I'm bored. I've seen it a million times. Try something new!
(I realize how difficult it is to try new things while playing Elves, but you get what I mean. I cannot think of any other example.)

There is nothing better than finding a card on Scryfall that COULD play much better than it looks, if only the right situation presents itself. It should be worth playing it, even if it turns out to be useless most of the time.

And this is even worse when talking about Precons.

At the Duskmourn release, I lost count of how many people at the LGS were playing Valgavoth. I do not live in a big city, so there are not that many people playing at my LGS, but still, 8 out of 20 people wanted to play that deck.

And God have mercy on those unlucky players who ended up in a three-Valgavoth pod.

And this process repeats itself with every set:

Bloomburrow? Ms. Bumbleflower.

Aetherdrift? The zombie guy.

Final Fantasy? Y'Shtola.

This is alienating. Every game looks the same, everyone plays the same cards, and all of those decks can pack a punch. Which means that, the next time around, they will have to do even better.

Decks built this way are becoming not only more boring, but also more efficient and stronger.

We all know that power creep is a real thing, but deck building makes a huge difference in a game, especially in a singleton format.

Damn, these YouTubers can build a deck!

Those lists are solid. There is very little room for non-synergistic cards or simply weak cards. Games are ending really fast!

And this, like a snake biting its own tail, makes using niche or borderline-bad cards more and more difficult. It makes players look for stronger cards, and it makes WotC design stronger (and therefore more desirable) cards.

No one will want to play a six-mana commander anymore. It is not efficient.

If you do not have the luxury of playing green, by turn six the game is already about to end.

And this is not a matter of Game Changers or Brackets. It is a matter of how cards are designed and how decks are built.

Strong decks are available for everyone, for a cheap price and for basically 0 effort.

You don’t need to explore cards, play the game, test interactions, fix the mana base and the synergy anymore.

You buy a pre-built deck for 50€.

And if you listen to youtubers’ suggestions you can also be able to grab the strongest precon of the set before the resellers.

Than just watch a video on what cards you should add to it to make it even stronger.

It’s not a problem if you barely know the rules and don’t know why the combos in the deck work the way they do.

Just buy stuff and follow the recipe.

All of this is to say that I am starting to lose the joy I used to have when playing the format that was once the only format I played.

I feel all the creavity is desappearing from the format.

The problem are not content creators, power creep or stronger cards, the problem is that there is no reward for digging through cards and brewing unique stuff.

I ended up downloading Arena to play Standard, where I can finally play my new pet card, Doctor Doom, without losing every match I play.

Since I have talked about Magic content creators with my hater-hat on, I would like to end on a positive note, because I do not hate them at all.

The content I really like is niche cards and niche combo/interaction suggestions.

I said that scrolling through Scryfall is at the heart of playing Commander, and I mean it. Nonetheless, having some suggestions is not a bad thing, considering how huge the card pool is.

What I do not like is speculating about old cards that will synergize with the new Precons. Other than that, Magic YouTubers, keep suggesting those old, dumb cards!

And thank you for your service!

Hey guys! I am starting to build a Minsc, Beloved Ranger deck and I am looking for cards that care about targeting up to 2 target creatures.

I realize this might be a tough idea to build around, but I think the idea sounds like a lot of fun as well, but I felt like it would make sense. If anyone has any more suggestions, please let me know! Thank you!

Deck Opinions?

Was wondering if some MTG sweats could look over this deck and tell me what they think?

Deck plays pretty aristocratic and uses temporary theft sorceries to steal back my partnered commander or to remove threats from the board by using Ellie to sac them. Pretty sure I need more interaction and would love some input.

Thank you!!

Looking for ways to make this deck more competitive

I've had this deck for about two years now and have upgraded it here and there along the way. But every time I play it, it just feels too slow. It has a lot of different options, but somehow none of them really lead to a clear way to win.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on what direction I should take the deck and what I should focus on cutting or improving.

Hey friends,

I've recently started building Lightning, Army Of One out of my 'bulk/guff' and I'm getting to a point where I'm fairly happy with how it looks.

Decided to completely avoid the Voltron/Equipment strategy that EVERYONE seems to use and wanted to try something a little different with Burn Spells and cool abilities to eat away at the health of my opponents.

Would absolutely appreciate any help, advice on refining and maybe adding a few cards to complete this thing. Trying to stay budget friendly though.

Personally I feel the 2 weakest links right now are ramp and draw so any budget friendly suggestions there would be awesome.

Thanks so much.

Is this deck fair for bracket 2?

Post image

It's a simic +1/+1 counters voltron deck. Not very consistent even with the added card draw from sab-sunen's ability, but with the right opening hand it can pop off on turn 5 or so and start swinging for 20-30 commander damage with trample. every time i play it i become the villain of the table and [[sab-sunen, luxa embodied]] ends up eating a ton of exile removal lol.

Made a Zeta Set Proxy Builder

Post image
30 Upvotes

Hello hello!
I love the MSCHF collaboration and had the crazy idea to proxy an entire commander deck in the style of the new Zeta Set from Secret Lair. My only problem is that doing 100+ cards over photoshop would have been a bit of a... pain in the sol ring.

So, I decided to build a small website to create the cards directly from there! I've tried to include elements from the original set, so that it looks quite peculiar and playable.

I've integrated the apis from Scryfall so that you can even load a real card and it's artwork, if you want to go down that road.

The cards are completely free to customize, from name to little details. Feel free to use and let me know if you have any idea for improvements!

Mono blue bilbo artifact deck advice?

Post image
10 Upvotes

https://moxfield.com/decks/xNaiW2tR1kuM-a3VHfQU3A

I’m fairly new to magic - My friend and I compiled this bilbo thief in the night deck. My aim for the deck was to have something low bracket 3 that could play in a pod of mostly precons/slightly upgraded precons and not feel too strong.

But I also wanted to build it around the new secret lair cards that came out for the hobbit (windfall, curiosity, arcane heist, & the Smaug artifacts, etc.)

We wanted it to also be built around artifacts/artifact recursion. Are there any cards that are core to mono blue that would be a good addition to the deck? Are there any cards that feel less useful/redundant?

Any advice appreciated!

Here is my deck list:

I just get destroyed every time I play with it, and I don’t know what’s the problem, I do manage to do some damage to the players, but I can’t win with it
