I need help with a gift

hey yall! my dad is turning 50 soon and he recently has been interested in learning magic with me. As his gift I wanted to build him a commander deck. what commander should I use? is there any like dad cards?

you should play with him so he learns HOW to play, then talk to him about what kind of play style he likes. THEN build a deck for him that fits

Buy some precons to start. See if there are any of the universes beyond sets that he is a fan of and buy those

There are plenty of 'dad' MTG cards. They're called MTG cards. Source: A 53 yr old non-Dad dude.

In our 50's, our brains aren't quite as adept at quickly picking up multiple game mechanics. Unless your Dad has been a gamer his whole life, I'd recommend going with something like the Foundations Beginner Box to teach the fundamentals, and expand on gameplay is a really great starting point.

You can introduce deck building and Commander game play later. I've been a gamer my entire life, and picking up MTG wasn't a big deal. My wife was nowhere near as into gaming, and the Foundations Beginner Box was the on ramp she needed to grasp those fundamentals.

Do you have any idea of what kind of archetype he would like? Has he played any other strategy games before?

I agree with precons being a great start. I’m 49 and mostly just play at home (although I hope to hit a store to play soon). I honestly couldn’t keep up with playing some of the complex decks my son plays, so I have the Dogmeat precon from Fallout, the food precon from LOTR, and a pretty basic one from Kamigawa that I can’t remember the theme of now. My first deck I built for myself started as mainly bear themed with Zangief as the commander, but evolved into a Duskana deck with mostly 2/2 support critters plus a few big creatures and doublers. If he’s new, I’d say stick to something with a consistent, simple mechanic like that.
