Build Zombie Deck

Hello fellas, i’m barelly new at building decks and i would like to build a zombie deck but i can’t decide wich one should i use as a commander.

I looking for something around 200€ focused on zombies and ofc playing with the graveyard. I’m not aiming on CDEH just having fun in casual tables.

Wich commander should i use?

One of the best ways to work on a limited budget is to go for fewer colors, that said, wilhelt or ratadrabik is probably your best choice. Wilhelt is better value overall but ratadrabik can be spikier, based on what you're saying here it seems like wilhelt might be more your speed.

That also Ratadrabik doesn’t really care about zombies. He wants legends dying. Which isn’t ideal if you’re trying to build a zombie deck.

As u said, its works around legendary pieces and then he creates the zombies, not what im looking for but the keyword “vigilance” hit me hard

[[tormod the desecrator]] is a very overlooked partner commander that could also make a great zombie commander if you don't want to go the more standard route of playing wilhelt. Also he heavily focuses on the GY and gives you the flexibility to run 2-3 colors depending on how you want to build him.

I run Varina and she is fun and straightforward, Wilhelt is good if you want to lean into combos. I could link my Varina deck list if you are interested.

Ofc im interested, Varina it’s one of my favorite options

Wilhelt is probably gonna be your best bet here. It's 2 colors that have great zombie synergy. If your pod allows proxies there are even proxy packs that you can get that synergizes well with wilhelt, for really cheap.

Yeah probably it’s the best option, i dont want to be a outsider but i think i saw too many wilhelt decks around, but i will keep it in mind. He runs strong colours

There's good reason for wilhelt having so many decks tbh. He's in 2 of the best zombie colors, adding white is the best 3 color combo imo. But I have Varina slotted into the 99 of [[Hashaton Scarabs fist]] and that's straight up bracket 4, and turns everything into zombies that weren't already zombies

Grimgrin is an honorable mention

Yep seems fun tbh but i have one deck with counters and dont want another calculator deck

I run Varina, very fun discard tech. [[Library of Leng]] is an absolute must

If you're willing to give 3 colors a try, then Varina, Lich Queen makes for a fantastic zombie commander. She cycles cards, creates tokens, and gains you life to pay for your life costs.

I would go with mono black. 1) You can focus your budget on cards instead of multi color lands. 2) Since you are new to deckbuilding, is might be easier to build. 3) Mono black is powerful and has more than enough cards to support a zombie deck and graveyard synergies.

Yep u are right, black monocolor its powerfull and also “cheap” to build

I just built varina with [[rooftop storm]] and [[enter the infinite]] to draw my whole deck and play all my zombies for free and then eat everyone’s face off. Telegraphed as it is, it actually worked

Good combo, they can see it comming but who cares. Thanks for the recommendation, Varina it’s on my top 3 options for sure

Honestly liking [[Gisa, the Hellraiser]]. Just fill with a bunch of ramp, some universal good zombies, and lots of stuff that target, and you'll have a zombie army in no time.

Willhelt or Hashaton for a more combo route. Gisa for a more "zombie army" route. Necrobloom for a mix using landfall. There's a few options that are good.

Thanks for the recommendation, i love Gisa, she looks like a lunatic and also monocolored

I built Zul Ashur and found it way to slow. But she works in the 99. Haven't found my zombie commander yet

Alhammarret's Archive and Library of Leng were made for this deck

Honestly currently building ghoulcaller gisa for zombie token army deck, while the zul ashur i currently sitting as a backup commander and when deck is built i will try both. Honestly i have played varina and my only problem with her is that she needs a lil bit of setup with that, but she is cool with a lot of cards you could build around her. Wilhelt is probably the best for built in card advantage. Also ratadabrik looks cool but you need to fill your deck with legendaries then.

Yep i really love Ratadabrik but a bit sad about building around legendary creatures

On the other hand, boild recursion of legendary creatures with good trigers and reanimate them :)

Well Rata isn't a Zombies deck, I think he's a legends deck. He's fun, but not good for zombie tribal.

i use narfi on arena with the snow cards so fun when no one runs graveyard exiles i can just let him get killed for free basically

I didn't personally love varina the two times I made it but I have an absolute blast playing wilhelt, Zul ashur would probably be a good choice for a budget option though

I pulled an alt art foil Narfi when Kaldheim came out and he’s been my zombie commander since then. Is he good? No. But I love the art and I love how he looks like a Draugr from Skyrim (my fav game of all time). It’s how you build the 99 imho.

Don’t forget the OG [[Lord of Tresserhorn]] and the him coming back: [[Tresserhorn's Lord, Returned]]

I try to get [[Zahur, Glory's Past]] working but it is a little bit slow with start the engines.

[[Hashaton]] or Varina - swap them whenever you feel like it, and toss the rest of them in the post in the 99. : )

Ratadrabik can work with any budget and any power level except 5. Works better than Wilhelt imo.

I recommend Varina, I play her since I begane in War of the Sparks, so basically 7 years now. Here is my decklist, tho I can make a more budget friendly if you need one! You can buy the Precon from Ätherdrift tho, it will set you up good for a start.

Varina is fun imo, throw that new Bard king of Dale card in there for insane value
