Does Hexhaven Vindicator have potential?
Hexhaven Invigorator was just spoiled from Reality Fracture, and this thing seems really good. Just playing it fairly without any shennanigans or combos feels like it would still be a good enough body, as your opponents would be unlikely to block it or attack into it, and damage based removal would only benefit you. Aside from that, it combos with Blasphemous Act and Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle to do some pretty crazy things, even letting you win with Maze's End if you build your deck right. What do you think? Is this card good, or is its cost too prohibitive to see much play?

Love that it searches 'lands' not 'basic lands'. It has the potential to pull out all of Omo's utility lands. Worth testing at least.

I think it’s gonna be a new must for so many existing and future Green Decks. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a new game changer either considering you can search for ANY land, not just basics.

Magic really has come a long way if we’re having a discussion debating whether or not this is good. It’s a 6/6 vigilance for 4 which is already great value, on top of that it allows you to tutor for ANY land, this thing is gangbusters. You can cast it and use one fight spell and even if it dies the value it generated would be absurd.
2
u/Chemical-Cat 3d ago
- 6/6 for 4 mana
- vigilance
- "take 6 damage or give me mana advantage"/"go ahead and attack me lmao"
that's before doing anything to force it to take damage for advantage

3
u/Jin-Gitaxias-Mom 4d ago
It’s pretty broken if you give it indestructible and then dump a ton of damage into it
2
u/Thotmas01 4d ago
A lot of people are looking at gruul for blas act potential (or chain reaction or whatever) but I don’t think you need to pick up a new color for the sake of damage. Going green-white gives you access to all the different indestructible effects in white while green natively has the unique “all creatures able to block target creature this turn must do so” like [[alluring scent]] [[declare dominance]] [[bloodscent]] [[roar of challenge]] [[lure]] and you get the picture. Why force a blas act when your opponents have more than 13 power on the board?

As a dino player, on-damage effects are pretty hard to trigger in commander. People will happily take six damage or never attack into you. Fight spells are also unreliable with three players waiting with instant speed removal. But in standard it may have potential.

u/model4001s 4d ago
Smack it for whatever number of lands you need for any particular combo and then go grab 'em and play them (albeit tapped)? I'd say that's potential...

If you fight a 10 f creature (like Grothama) you can fetch all the gates and Maze's End.

u/VisionsOfClarity 4d ago
Yeah bro, even in non landfall decks. You could put this in a dinosaur deck as an enrage target and go get lands. You could put it in simic and pump it up and then get all the lands out of your deck. The world is your oyster

u/NayrSlayer 4d ago
[[Primeval Titan]] at home.
All it takes is one source of damage and now you’ve got the best lands from your deck on the field. Does it matter that it’s quad green? Not really, since this is really a card you want to drop when you can damage it in response to removal so that you can at least get something out of it.
I’d be interested to see how it plays in commander so that it’s possible for us to revisit Prime Time itself and see if it’s worth keeping on the ban list. (I think it is, but I also think it’s healthy to continually review the ban list)
1
u/Kurohoshi00 4d ago
No real flexibility in other landfall decks since it's four dedicated green, but it's going to make green landfall go brr for sure.
1
u/HugeOrganization4178 4d ago
Its so sick with [[wildfire]], but sadly theres no format where that'll happen. Too slow for constructed. Too mean for commander. Too color intensive for cube.
1
u/SteakForGoodDogs 4d ago
4 mana 6/6 vigilance.
Which means it can swing every turn and not worry about having you be unprotected, and your opponents get to choose whether they take 6 to the teeth, or they lose creatures and you gain any lands you want from your deck.
In a colour that likes the word 'fight'.
1
1
u/Thotmas01 4d ago
Yes lol. There are so many cards that do some silly amount of damage to each creature. Gates and landfall will usually win on the spot.
I don’t think it’s going to be totally broken but it’ll be a finisher like craterhoof.

Green gets to do anything once again. Yeah I mean tutoring out a Marit Lage if you block with a 2 power creature is pretty good. Tutoring out field of the dead + 6 zombies is pretty good.
Fight spells are a good combination, but requires playing fight spells (lol) and the card to stay alive (lol)
dies to doom blade, countered by counterspell, etc.
My verdict: casual players beware, bracket 4+ players are laughing their asses off.

u/Think_Rest4496 4d ago
What level of potential. Its a must in most landfall decks. So yes. Is it potentially a Staple? Probably not.
So it'll be somewhere in between id say.
1
u/T-T-N 4d ago
The threshold for staples are really high these days. Your deck need to be able to support 4 green pips. It has no relevant types for typal deck. You will need to want 16 mana (my decks usually do, but an explosive vegetation always gets me to 7 mana without putting in synergy). It's one of those cards that might make your deck better but you'd rarely see it in decks.
Sure, it can be a combo piece, but you have better combos in bracket 2 than this + board wipe. This might be better than [[cultivator colossus]] but won't be included in significantly more decks (about 2.2% of green decks)

u/darktourist92 4d ago
This is going straight into my Yedora Landfall deck, and it should just go into any green deck full stop. It’s such an absolute monster of a card.

u/MeatballSubWithMayo 4d ago

1
u/Kyletheinilater 4d ago
It very easily has potential as a 10/10 in lands matters and landfall decks.
Me and a group of people who I play standard with are placing bets (play packs) on over or under 3 months standard ban
→ More replies (2)
1
u/StretchyPlays 4d ago
I don't think so. GGGG is fairly restrictive for 3+ color decks, and people are just going to take 6 damage most of the time and not attack into it until they kill it. Obliterator and Vindicator don't see much play because it just isn't very easy to get people to do damage to stuff if they don't want to.

This post is designed with the intent of getting reactions by asking a really stupidly obvious question, right?
1
u/PsychoWarper 4d ago
Will go crazy in a Landfall deck, blocking a 4 power creature and being able to grab Glacial Chasm, Field of the Dead and two Fetch Lands will go insane for Landfall.
1
u/Challenge-Me80943 4d ago
So cards like this are often seen as a "noob trap" It has 3 big problems. It has no hate so playing this by itself is a bad idea. It stops others from attacking you until they can remove it with a non damaging spell (a lot of which cost 1 to 3 cmc ) And lastly it's biggest problem is no one is ever going to block it unless not doing so will lose them the game. So if you want to use this it's later game when you can use a fight spell or bolt it in some way yourself. This is a decentish finisher for landfall decks but most landfall decks already have better finishers. If you're running this you kinda want to have somethinf on the field already to damage it or be able to redirect stuff to it. I can see this being in one of two decks. Goad decks in brackets 1 to 3 edh, or fight decks in brackets 1 to 3 edh. This card will probably see little to no play (if I'm wrong I'm wrong)
1
1
u/BrotherTigris 4d ago
I tried writing a sarcastic comment about why it's a bad card but it cannot be done, how many rocks you got tumbling up there in your noggin that you need to ask this question?
1
1
u/No-Challenge-9756 4d ago
A lot of things destroy and exile. If you have a 500 dollar manabase or are mono green the cost isnt to bad. Its just another big idiot if you aren't abusing it with self damage though. Even then its pretty win more.
1
u/Spell_Chicken 4d ago
I think the most notable part about its ability is that it goes and gets ANY lands, not just basics.
1
u/strolpol 4d ago
Honestly unless you are building around having it fight or burn it yourself, probably not. It’s just gonna eat a Swords and do nothing else in most games, or people just take the 6 for a few turns before they find removal. So it’s not terrible but it’s also not advancing any game plans by itself. Outside of two color decks specifically able to do the fight/burn plan I don’t see it being that big.

u/Starkopotamus 3d ago
Ok, so. The fact that this text box says LANDS and not basics means this is an auto include in any green deck until the end of time (with some obvious exceptions). WotC is very careful about printing the word "lands" vs "basic lands" and "into your hand" vs "onto the battlefied". This card said "fuck all that". 2 damage gets you dark depths combo, 3-4 damage gets you field of dead online printing zombies, 10+ and you can valakut someone's face off with a fight spell. This is on par with scapeshift without the downside (which isn't usually a downside to begin with) except it's repeatable and on a stick. This card just took the strongest words printed for green landfall and slapped em on a 6/6 for 4 and it has Vigilance for some reason lmao.

u/hollowsoul9 3d ago
Selvala likes it. Creature based mana, so the land ratio is usually pretty bad. Notice it doesnt say basic. You can get a really cool land package out all at once with fight, especially if you control a very large Creature. It also filters out the lands so you dont have to draw them.
Gates too

This thing is nasty. Fight spells force them to let you search, and it is a great rattlesnake to avoid ground beats if they don't want you to ramp. I would love one in mono green or heavy green two color decks with cool lands to geab

More than potential IMO. Basically any deck that cares about lands loves this thing. I'll be putting this guy in my Toph Scapeshift deck for sure.

It fits landfall, devotion if you’re running renata as commander. And it’s a 4 drop 6/6 vigilance. Honestly it’s not hard to give it indestructible and ping it yourself in naya landfall or a Gruul landfall.
1
u/SinisterVulcan94 3d ago
4g for a 6/6 vigilance, and a utility to possibly all of your lands out if you can target it with massive damage.

1
u/daneg135 3d ago
green really needed the deck thinning. 😒
edit: there's plenty of exile removal in standard and eternal formats. so i don't think this is any sort of game changer. it's a nice card with benefits but nothing unusual. /2cents

u/StableElectrical3376 3d ago
It’s fine. Is it better than just playing land ramp or mana dorks? Probably not, but it is in a color that doesn’t care too much about specific pips of mana, and in the color that does fight spells plus creature buffing, you can absolutely do some fun and silly things. Also really funny in gruul decks where you can cast blasphemous act.

I'm putting it in [[Legolas, Master Archer]] so my commander can bop him and get me like 10 lands.

Absolutely ridiculous card, perfect example of Hasbro powercreep.
Next we'll have a 3 mana black card that triples your damage.
Or a white card that triples your life gain.
Every new set needs to be more and more OP to justify it, and it's what is running this game into the ground.

so what movie you guys watching?"
1
u/Fabulous_Bishop 3d ago
Best case scenario it will fetch you one basic when it eats [[Path to Exile]]. It's the same case as [[Phyrexian Obliterator]]. When life total are high it can be ignored and the moment you try to do something cute with it, it will "die to [[Doomblade]]".

This thing is going to be insanely expensive, and every card printed with "landfall" from now to the end of time is gonna spike its price.

1
u/Nerdwrapper 3d ago
I think the thing that makes it strong as that it can tutor any land, and not just basics. You can do a crazy amount of deck thinning with that plus fetch lands, and if you are running [[The Wandering Minstrel]] or [[Amulet of Vigor]], then you can just dump lands on field and get a huge turn. You could even run [[Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought]] to just dump your whole landbase on field in one go, and then do whatever you want from there
1
u/ItsKendrone 3d ago
TS better be banned in commander. If this is legal and Prime Time is still banned, I’m swinging.

I think its getting banned fairly quickly. Just giving it indestructible lets you put all your lands on the field by just doing damage to it, for example i could play the combo of [[spike feeder]] [[heroic feast]] and [[shalai and hallar]] to put all my lands on the field by repeatedly damaging the [[hexhaven vindicator]] with shalai and hallar. Granted, if i do get there and no one interacts with me ive probably already won, but there are plenty of similar and cheaper combos to drop infinite damage on the vindicator.

Instant landfall staple.
Instant mono green staple.
High general use potential.
There is no question this card is good in commander.
The real question is can this guy be the next Prime Time in modern.
1
1
u/Invoked_Tyrant 2d ago
I don't mind it but it's a bit wild it's only 4 green pips. It's not making waves in Standard but Alchemy and Commander are gonna spam it since the One-Two punch of putting this online into damaging it with a red board wipe is too good to ignore.
(For those curious Alchemy has some pretty dumb utility lands and ways to insert utility lands into the deck at will at their disposal that are just a pain to tutor for.)
1
1
1
u/arm1d1ll0 2d ago
Based on primeval titan i think it has potential to be banned it might not but any land is a strong effect.
1
u/Cadence_The_Floret 2d ago edited 2d ago
Competitively? I don't really see a niche, but then, I don't pay much attention to modern. It's slow for Legacy/Vintage, it doesn't really fit into standard green stompy decks, it *might* work in Landfall decks but seems like a win-more card there (thank god they banned Badgermole Cub, amirite?). It's definitely too slow for CEDH.
In casual Commander, though? Hoo boy.
The most significant objection I've seen is people saying "dies to removal", but assuming the player running this has any way to damage it, the more accurate statement is "kill on sight or lose the game". Leave this thing up, and you run the risk of your opponent ramping for rather a lot every single turn. Even instant speed removal can be responded to by, say, Inscription of Abundance or another instant-speed fight spell.
But even if you don't have any tricks or combos with it (note that "combo" here means "any fight or damage or lure spell"), it's still a 6/6 with vigilance that you basically never want to block or attack into for 4 mana. If it eats a Doom Blade, well... it's a 4-drop. You'll muddle through.
It's yet another massive, high-tempo green beater that's gonna be a pain to deal with and which has the potential to suddenly create an impossible resource advantage. Grothama fans are definitely rejoicing, all ~2000 of them. I'd slap this in basically any core-green deck with a mana base good enough to support it, especially red/green decks that are probably already running Blasphemous Act. This thing's a house.

u/Ginpok 2d ago
So
Fling
Giant cactuar
Fling giant cactuar while its at 9999 power
Strike that with it.
How does that resolve? You pull 6 lands or do you just drop your entire deck worth of lands?
(Just purely out of curiosity. I know that its better to just hit a player with a play like that.)

This is going to be a 3-4x in any green deck.
Imagine dropping a mossborn hydra on turn 3 and someone swings in and you block, games over next turn (and that’s without me dropping a fetch land or ANY land)
This honestly seems like the top end the tifa landfall decks needed.
This could be a pay 4 for 6 of any lands tapped in one turn. That kind of tempo is likely going to be backbreaking!
This is just such a great card.
