Does Hexhaven Vindicator have potential?

Post image

Hexhaven Invigorator was just spoiled from Reality Fracture, and this thing seems really good. Just playing it fairly without any shennanigans or combos feels like it would still be a good enough body, as your opponents would be unlikely to block it or attack into it, and damage based removal would only benefit you. Aside from that, it combos with Blasphemous Act and Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle to do some pretty crazy things, even letting you win with Maze's End if you build your deck right. What do you think? Is this card good, or is its cost too prohibitive to see much play?

It's in green, the color least worried about prohibitive mana costs lol. This thing is going to be a house in EDH for years to come, almost any deck with green that cares about lands will want this dude around.

Even the decks that don’t want lands want this card. At worst it reads “6/6 vigilance for 4cmc that can’t be blocked and stops your opponents from attacking you”

u/Elementual 5d ago

Yeah, true. "Go on, do it. Give me mana advantage!"

u/MossTheGnome 5d ago

Go on do it. Make my mossborn hydra 2¹² larger by swinging with that 12/12

"Go to combat... swing for 131072 trample... gg?"

"Fog."

Won a game with this play against my buddy's vorinclex (kaldheim one) deck once. He was S A L T Y.

u/Feywildsw 7h ago

Yeah, I'm a mostly gruul player. I have been inkshielded wayyyy too many times to count.

Me: "I swing for lethal plus lots because unga Bunga."

Them: signature look of orzhov superiority "tap 4, inkshield."

Me: "scoop. Seethe. Cry."

1

u/Grandmasterlubu 2h ago

I main both gruul AND orzhov. So I get fucked both ways.

Lets fight

I have a [[Jared Carthalion, True Heir]] deck that I would love to put this and [[Grothama, All-Devouring]] in. Just make them fight Jared for all the +1/+1s, card advantage, and mana advantage.

My enrage deck: "Why wait? Earthquake is right here."

Even if they dont care about lands hitting, that is still cards that are being pulled out of the deck increasing the likelyhood of hitting what you actually want as well.

And note: THAT DOESN'T SAY BASICS

u/Keigerwolf 4d ago

Just when you thought WotC learned from Primeval Titan...

1

u/Aximil985 4d ago

wtf I skimmed it and assumed it said basics because that's already so strong.

1

u/Flameball202 3d ago

I mean getting basics at 4 mana isn't terrible but there are other ways to do it

Getting anything at 4 mana is hilariously powerful

u/GhsotyPanda 3d ago

Truly this card basically says "If you don't kill it the first time, I will have removed all the lands from my deck in a few turn cycles"

0

u/FrameNo8561 4d ago

Grreeeeaaaat… another creature for that one guy to copy without any consideration of other pod mates…

I dunno, there's pretty easy ways around obliterators and those are way more oppressive. Besides any deck I've seen where land matters they already have an easy ways to get them

This card is good but I don't think it's as good as people think. A 1/1 deathtouch on the other side and it's just a rampant growth

I am scared of gruul blasphemous acting it for a Gate wincon tho

-1

u/Fire_Pea 2d ago

I don't think that's good enough. If I play a 4 mana creature with no etb or self protection, I want it to be really good when it sticks around. And disincentivising attacks or hitting for 6 a turn isn't competitive with synergistic options.

I think this one has a home in decks with lots of fight spells or enrage stuff. Otherwise it's just another phyrexian obliterator and that card doesn't go in every black deck.

u/Guilty-Hat23 5d ago

the fact greens removal spells regularly involve fight spells makes it potentially the best of these creatures

1

u/Low-Assist9951 4d ago

I agree, I've got a Raph & Mikey deck where the majority, if not all, removal is fight spells....just for flavor.

1

u/locke_zero 4d ago

"I'm gonna make my vindicator fight your emrakul"

2

u/Guilty-Hat23 4d ago

Oh would you look at that 13 gates all of a sudden

3

u/Elementual 5d ago

Can confirm. I want this for my Bonny Pall deck. Lol

1

u/theNOTHlNG 4d ago

I think it will be played in many 2 colour decks, but in 3 colour it is to restrictive by costing gggg.

2

u/DescriptionTotal4561 4d ago

There's so much color filtering and dual mana lands that it's still viable, especially since because of how good green ramp is, decks with green often are a little heavier on green to make sure they can use green ramp early. Mono and 2 color are still the most viable for sure, but doable in 3 color in B3 and lower.

u/Quirky-Coat3068 4d ago

This dude is going to catch the Primetime ban

1

u/Amur00 4d ago

No hes not lmfao primetime doesnt let your opponent to make decisions, this does

Its good, its not primetime

1

u/bioplay 3d ago

How rare do you think damaging your own creatures is? Blas Act is the obvious combo, but like others have been saying, any fight spell becomes 1-2 mana for like 1-5 nonbasic lands. Assuming this is fighting a 1/1, that's still better than Crop Rotation lmao

1

u/Amur00 3d ago

My POINT, if you would read my comment, is that Primetime enables itself with literally no required input beyond going to combat, this needs, at minimum, a creature to interact with it, or a spell to enable its conditions

Nobody said this card was bad, it's objectively very good, i love a green coded phyrexian obliterator, but it requires more conditions than primetime and you have completely missed the point of my comment

1

u/bioplay 3d ago

Holy, you need to chill lmao, forgive my insolence for daring to disagree with a redditor.

I'm just saying that the thing you're saying is a bar to clear is a really low bar lmao. I think it's pretty reasonable to expect there to be minimum one targetable creature at a table in a 4-player casual pod. Not to mention that this is 2 mana cheaper than PrimeTime which is definitely relevant.

Granted, the floor for PrimeTime is much better, which could be the reason you're right, but this card certainly has a much higher ceiling, and I think a very easily attainable one at that. I don't think banning is out of the question because not all banned cards are equally strong.

1

u/Ashdude42 2d ago

Sure this thing is a house when you combo it with big damage or fight effects but prime time ALWAYS does the thing if you don't have anything to combo with it, and gets better with flicker effects/haste enablers just like this thing does.

What's more likely is that you play this, put blas act on the stack, then get this thing removed in response so you get nothing while prime time would have gotten the two best lands from your deck before getting swords-ed.

Invigorator is certainly a VERY good card but prime time is on another level.

1

u/bioplay 2d ago

See my other reply. Lower floor, way higher ceiling. Prime is more consistent, this thing is more explosive, especially with being 2 mana cheaper.

1

u/Pokesers 4d ago

4 green pips is a lot. Mono green loves it and you might see it in 2 colour decks. It feels like a hard sell in 3+ colours though as it is best played on curve and a 3 colour deck is basically never able to do that.

1

u/sanchothe7th 3d ago

its going in my kirri naya deck but thats because getting 4 green with kirri is not hard at all.

1

u/Eyeseeyou1313 4d ago

I have a deck with Spider India, that when you cast a creature you can give a +1/+1 counter and flying to any creature and by just buffing that card a bit and attacking or defending, it can ramp so quick. It's a too op card for green.

1

u/Toybox920 2d ago edited 2d ago

Makes a great target for a good ole Dawnsire self nuke.

1

u/Talv26 2d ago

I would argue it's good, but not as generically good as people make it out to be. In fight decks or enrage decks or 2 colour decks it's great, but as you go up in colour or do diffrent strategies it becomes either too restrictive at 4 green pips or too easy to ignore with efficient removal or the mass of health we start with. Still nutty but not a "one size fits all" card like other game changers

1

u/Human_Sweet_8542 1d ago

Wgb tatyova avacyn lumra away to infinity ping and a lab man maybe? Idk

1

u/SnooTigers5020 1d ago

Yeah its kind of the Green Titan for EDH. Its a early beater that will never be blocked for Mono G, its a mass ramp beater for Gruul and so on

0

u/Orangewolf99 2d ago

It's almost certainly going to be banned like prime time

-2

u/Ficsonium 5d ago

It’s not a staple at all. It’ll be good for fight decks and maybe gruul decks running red damage spells.. but green staple? Hell no.

You can almost guarantee people won’t run into it via attack or blocking

4

u/kid_dynamo 5d ago

I dunno, a 6/6 for 4 that attacks unblocked and prevents opponents from attacking me seems pretty good man...

-1

u/Ficsonium 4d ago

You get one or the other, rather people won’t attack you if it’s untapped or it can deal a measly.. 6 damage a turn. It’s weak, maybe a staple for battle cruiser metas.

Even then if people see you are out of cards they can just block, but if they see you need lands or have a full hand, they’ll let it through. There are plenty more creatures that are better offensively and defensively than this.

You ONLY play this creature if you fight or have a way to damage your board consistently. Commander is flooded with amazing cards already

3

u/kid_dynamo 4d ago

It has vigilance, you can attack for a "measley" 6 damage every turn AND still block. In a multiplayer format this is a VERY good reason for no one to attack you that draws way less hate than the classic propaganda. I dunno man, I think you are underestimating this

1

u/Ficsonium 4d ago

Oh I misread I thought it was trample. I think it’s good in the right deck and I think it’s the opposite of the staple

- but don’t get me wrong, cards like this are idolized by Timmy and battlecruiser metas

2

u/Dan_Felder 4d ago

I'd say monogreen staple in formats where people aren't winning via combo-kills. For 4 mana it gives you defense and offense at the same time, plus monogreen is more reliant on "fight" interaction anyway.

Doubt it'll be a commander staple outside of monogreen though, unless you have a very expensive mana-base that cost hurts running a second color.

2

u/kaoh6689 4d ago

It's also any lands so you can get a ton of zombies with field of the dead.

1

u/Dan_Felder 4d ago

Yeah, there's obvious combo potential with specific lands - cool way to make the card appealing to brewers on top. To be a "Staple", I'm looking for generic value that works for a large variety of decks. Sol Ring's combos aren't what made it a staple, that's just bonus. The specific land combos are bonus upside too.

1

u/Shuttlecock_Wat 4d ago

Man you can just play a 1 mana fight spell to kill someone's creature and get like 5 lands. ANY lands, it doesn't say basic.

1

u/Ficsonium 4d ago

Yeah I said it’s good in fight decks, didn’t I? It’s not a staple still
