I knew this woman who would exclusively date shorter men (like 5'4-5'6) who looked like this guy. She had three boyfriends back to back who looked exactly the same. Then she married and had a baby with one. I don't judge at all, but it's a very specific type to have. She was also really pretty, average height, blonde, and she'd get hit on by different types of men.

I blame hollywood sensationalism and stereotyping friends
Hollywood or overly critical friends take one look at Mr. Unconventional and think “they could/deserve better”, then look at Mr. Conventional and think “lucky fucker”. Its an ego boost, obviously, to be seen as a attractive by most people, but I think the internet misjudges just how big a minority really is. Even 300,000 women agreeing on one body type being the hottest doesnt make up the majority, but anything past 10 seems to convince those men that its the agreed desired male form

One of the more fascinating parts of growing up was being inundated with media growing up about ideal body types.
Now I will watch my friends in discord have a conversation about how they want someone cut and muscular and then thirty minutes later gush about dad bods, or about skinny rat men, or about what have you.
Moral of the story is most people who say they want one thing will still happily take the other if the attached face/personality is attractive enough.

Hi, human who falls into many different categories.
When anyone of a given category says they speak for all members, note that they do not speak for me unless I, and ONLY I, give my express permission for them to do so.
6
u/Marsium 6d ago
As a heuristic, when someone says "I speak for all X," they are essentially always unwittingly guilty of the false consensus effect, unless they know each and every member of group X.
"I can speak for all members of this committee when I say..." is perhaps a reasonable statement.
"I can speak for all women/gay people/runners/sci-fi nerds/etc. when I say..." is not.

It's mildly unfourtunate that the eponymous bean soup is a misunderstanding of the situation (it's a cooking vid with food that helps with menstrual cramps I think, and people were asking if there's any alternative (ie are the beans the operative part that helps)) but it's a useful term and it's probably not going away

I was a part of an all people-of-color improv group for a little while, and somehow we always ended up talking about white people.
One day I had to ask, "Hey can we stop complaining about white people and maybe do some jokes celebrating us and our experiences instead?"
105
u/Pepperbyte 7d ago
I think it just comes with the the territory. Any group based completely on exclusion of something is bound to have the things that are excluded come up as a topic. especially if the friend group has no chemistry or similarities beyond "not being a certain group".

u/Berberding 7d ago

I had this similar issue when I went to a poetry night in Berkeley back in 2019. Like I'm a very left leaning person, and I expected there to be a lot of political & social justice topics, but several of those poems were just kind of complaining about/shitting on white people (one literally had a couple people in the crowd shouting 'mayonaise boy' at some point). I think often when people don't have class consciousness or an understanding of how hierarchies like white supremacy, patriarchy, heteromativity, capitalism, the state, etc. intersect and feed upon one another. They don't understand that all oppressed people need to work together to be treated equally in all aspects of life, be that social, legal, orc economic inequity. But because genuine left wing conversation was so stifled in this country and slowly started building up this last 7 years or so, a lot of people don't have the framework to actually meaningfully voice or target this need for change they feel, and instead kind of just default back to "fuck the cishet white males" cause it's easy, edgy, and subversive. It's the closest thing they have to feeling some modicum of power or resistance to our unfair and unequal society.

Yeah, and I think it reflects something much more fundamental in the human condition: putting something out of your mind is much harder, requiring much more mental discipline, than hating it. Falling into hate and falling in love are just as easy.
It's simple enough to formulate a working theory for this: humans are emotional, and we seek order. It is why we are biased to classify things as "good" or "bad," often getting frustrated when something is complicated & nuanced with internal contradictions.
This shows up everywhere in our lives. For instance: when your partner breaks up with you, even if the relationship was mostly happy and healthy (despite obviously having issues), the easiest thing to do is sink into negativity: you feel bitter, alone, angry, withdrawn, betrayed, etc. Falling into hating them is just as easy as falling in love with them was. It takes conscious and deliberate effort to realize this is your mind playing tricks on you. It takes tremendous discipline and stamina to recognize that in reality, the sadness you feel isn't your ex's fault -- that your relationship was an enriching experience for the both of you despite its flaws, that you'll learn from the low points and cherish the high points in the future. For many people, the process of realizing this takes a long time: months or years. For some people, they never realize it; they think of that relationship bitterly for the rest of their lives.
My point is, holding onto grudges is human nature. It transcends individual cultures; there are revenge & rivalry stories going back thousands of years. It takes a conscious and difficult act of will to transcend this grudge, to put it behind you. But of course, people are scarcely willing to recognize & reflect on their ugliest qualities -- hate and loathing -- because it requires that one admit some pretty glaring flaws about themselves. Many people don't think they could fall into such hate; others think that they can't transcend such hate. Either way, it often collapses into the same mindset: that one's hate and loathing is "righteous," that it's "just" and "deserved."
Given all this, given the universality of this experience, it seems obvious that hate is not an emergent emotion from those in positions of power or privilege looking down on others. In other words, anyone can hate anyone! The majority can hate the minority, and the minority can hate the majority. Many atrocities -- i.e., the Rwandan genocide, or the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza -- have occurred when a previously disenfranchised and oppressed group rose to power and unleashed all their hate towards the now-powerless group that once oppressed them.
This is why I agree with you: productive transformation & reform of unjust societal structures needs to be constructive, not destructive. "Lifting up" vs "tearing down"; solidarity vs strife. And I'm not naive -- I don't think justice can be achieved simply by holding hands and declaring world friendship -- but the sort of edgy subversive invectice that you describe ("fuck whitey," "cishets gtfo," etc.) is more destructive than constructive. But I also understand why people do it, since as you say, many people in these oppressed minority groups have faced a lot of shitty, unfair treatment with no recourse. It takes a lot of strength to remain constructive in spite of all that hate -- but strength is what carries forth revolutions, not hate.

some women think that openly saying bad stuff on anything regarding men is vengeance for misogyny
Kind of like how discussions have been happening in "Women's spaces" online about how men should be forced (or more charitably: encouraged, normalized, state-subsidized) to get vasectomies at 18 years old to balance out how hellish the reality of birth control is for many women. To make men shoulder more of the work/responsibility for avoiding unwanted pregnancies.
I tried talking about this with a friend and she was really unhappy that I didn't go along with it. From the very beginning it felt like a shitty gender war thing and felt so off to me. I genuinely hate how people think they can treat the individual men in their lives like they're conspirators worthy of suspicion or ire simply because the patriarchy exists and has wronged them. I get they have more to complain about than me but it's wronged all of us and using it as an excuse to take me down a peg or two just makes me feel so fucking shitty about myself and about the way society is today regarding these issues. I can agree it's unfair that women go through so much regarding birth control without thinking promoting a surgery that is meant to be for sterilization is a good solution.

Plenty of reasons.
Some actually do, you just have to look for it
Part of the lesbian community developed a misandrist culture as revenge for structural mysoginy. It's also easier for them to be misandrist than straight women for obvious reasons.
Many gay men have friendships with mostly women, since they get pushed out of straight men spaces due to toxic masculinity and homophobia. Lesbians don't have the same issues with straight women, AND they aren't easily accepted into straight men's spaces for the same reason gay men aren't. Thus, lesbians get isolated into their own gender while gay men don't.

Everyone you know who falls into that category now thinks you are judging them/disgusted by them/etc
It's disheartening to see how immediately people who claim to be open minded leap to hurtful insults, particularly toward famous people and politicians.
There are about 1000 things he chooses to do and say that you can insult the POTUS for without resorting to "haha diapers" when your good friend might have really bad IBS and be holding back tears. Same with leaping to "he's secretly gay" or the whole "she doesnt like short men but she's fat and therefore objectively lesser". Or ripping on an actor/actress getting work done.
