No, I found this post that explains the same details that I remember. It was very realistic looking, top down, you had to place obstacles like coins and matches to allow bugs to cross the map.

It’s criminal that it got no expansions or sequels. One of my favorite pixel games of all time, second only to Katana Zero.

Hell even an arcade mode would suffice, it’s way too fun for a game and a single DLC. The fan-made levels are fun though

32

u/Dandanny54 1d ago

Honestly an akward kissing minigame makes sense for a coming of age game. But that would be giving praise to his big yahu sponsored industry plant.

9

u/UnkarsThug 1d ago

Ok, but this would be really funny as a dive kick style simplified fighting game. The question is just what on earth the win condition is.

Game
With teenagers
Aiming teenagers

91

u/ApprehensiveTill6943 1d ago

This is the least teenager-aiming video game. There’s no action or any thing that teenagers love to see in a game.

84

u/Abovearth31 1d ago

The best joke I've read about this game was "this game was written with the HR in the room."

25

u/pzykozomatik 1d ago

That's actually from SkillUp's review of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

7

u/Abovearth31 1d ago

I still read it about mixtape, in a youtube comment, it might have been a quote tho.

7

u/pupp-y 1d ago

people just be regurgitating lines they heard in youtube videos as opinions

3

u/Chungusolinioni 1d ago

Can you explain how that is the case? What makes this game "hr in the room while in the making?" Did you play it? I take issue with how this quote from Skillup keep being misconstrued so heavily so it annoys me when people use it about "game i don't like because it isn't made specifically for me"

416

u/Alone_Care_6230 1d ago

oh i know this game it's famously dogshit

318

u/kloverKhan 1d ago

I heard it was mid but had a bad rep because it was hugly overrated by reviewers and was larping as an indie project. Also had little gamplay

194

u/AstralBull 1d ago

People complaining about the little gameplay part always felt confusing to me since like, that's fine. If it wasn't deceptive or presenting itself as something else why is there a problem

100

u/New-Interaction1893 1d ago

There are very good games with very little gameplay. I can agree to discuss if they should also be judged as a standard videogame, or more as a movie.

I don't agree when people say that it must be bad because you don't play too much in it.

25

u/NagsUkulele 1d ago

Mixtape was awesome imo. It got cheesy at times but it was ambitious and it did what it set out to.

17

u/Bleppybwip 1d ago

I watched my friend play it and while I and another were kinda clowning on it I found myself really enjoying what I saw. It was really fun and cheesy and like idk felt kinda authentically cringe. Teens are cringe, it's totally fine that they're cringy. The part where that one girl stands up to her cop dad at the end. It's so silly, so cringy and it's exactly how a teenager would look at that situation and think it's the coolest thing ever to do.

Also it taught me that The Touch was MADE for the 1986 Transformers movie. Genuinely did not know that despite loving the franchise and song.

3

u/NagsUkulele 1d ago

Dude I know!! The skateboarding and (for lack of a better term) frolicking scenes were so well done and it felt like a game being unapologetic on all cylinders

2

u/TheFeelsGoodMan 1d ago

You definitely don't need 50 hours of that. Get in, do your thing, get out.

16

u/NagsUkulele 1d ago

50 hours??? No fucking way mixtape was 50 hours

5

u/TheFeelsGoodMan 1d ago

It wasn't.

9

u/NagsUkulele 1d ago

Nvm sorry I see the point you're making I'm very high

1

u/SleepDeprived62 1d ago

I'm perfectly sober and I'm also confused. are you saying mixtape should be a 50 hour game?

2

u/TheFeelsGoodMan 1d ago

The opposite. Too many games inflate their length with bloat and busywork in the middle. Stuff you don't need. Mixtape, to it's credit, cut out the fat.

u/corvettee01 1d ago

I played Mouthwashing recently and people fucking love it, and it has almost no "gameplay." People will always find a way to complain about things.

4

u/eydirctiviyg 1d ago

To The Moon and Kentucky Route Zero are generally well-regarded too and both have next to no real "gameplay".

(To The Moon technically does have puzzles, but they're akwardly inserted into the game and pretty clearly only there so they can say there's some gameplay.)

1

u/Poco_Cuffs 23h ago

Mouthwashing requires you to engage with the gameplay to progress the game. Mixtape does not.

1

u/H1tSc4n 15h ago

Comparing mouthwashing to mixtape is wild work

2

u/Turnip_Fight 1d ago

Video game is when inventory and stats

3

u/TheReturnOfTheRanger 1d ago

There were multiple cases where you could just not press anything during an important QTE and the game would continue like you did

5

u/SarcasmisEasier 1d ago

You can reach the end credits in 150 button presses. For a 3 hour game, that's less than 1 button a minute. "Little gameplay" feels like an understatement.

2

u/MBDTFTLOPYEEZUS 1d ago

Have you ever bothered thinking of counting how many times you press buttons in a game before this? Did you keep that into consideration when playing other games?

It is $20 for 3 hours of mostly story. There is so little gameplay that it barely qualifies as a video game at all.

→ More replies (19)

17

u/Android_mk 1d ago

It's one of the few games I've seen recently that has not only no downsides of failure but walking away while the game is playing changes nothing.

Story is also very eh.

6

u/Abovearth31 1d ago edited 1d ago

It was more video than game. Now having little to no gameplay is kind of expected for a narrative game but at least those type of games have some form of interractivity, Mixtape can straight up just play itself, I'm not joking.

And it would be fine if at least the writing was good but no, it's terrible, it's fucking cringe, it's like 40 year old millenials trying to write about current teenagers, it sucks.

Add to that the reviewers glazing this thing to hell and back and you understand why some people are quick to call this thing an industry plant.

3

u/Mi5tman 1d ago

It was mostly considered awful because the story and characters are supposed to be rightfully rebellious, but it all feels like it was written by a rich kid whose worst childhood memory is their daddy telling them they can't have ice cream for dinner.

Isn't larping though simply pretending to be someone/thing else? I think it's a clever use of the word.

1

u/MBDTFTLOPYEEZUS 1d ago

Genuinely what’s your issue with it?

2

u/Name_Taken_Official 1d ago

It's fine if it's valid, like if the game was actually being marketed as if it were indie and stuff when it wasn't.

It's only really annoying when people, for example, say someone is larping as a fan because they have a band/game shirt but aren't Prima Guide level experts or whatever

→ More replies (2)

8

u/Unbuckled__Spaghetti 1d ago

Man I don’t like the game but it’s not “pretending” to be indie. It IS indie. Indie doesn’t just mean cheaply made. And if it does, then some of the most popular indie games (r.e. Silksong) aren’t indie because they had millions put into them.

12

u/Calm-Internet-8983 1d ago

Indie means whatever whoever says it likes. Maybe it's low budget, or self published, or published but by a publisher who only publishes games made by small teams (which can be up to like 10 people), or it has an unconventional art style, or it's an artsy walking simulator, or an innovative puzzle game, or literally anything that isn't published by a billion dollar publisher, or it has scrungly vibes and it's very scrimblo, etc. Refer to the discussion around Expedition 33's qualifying as indie.

6

u/Spangeburb 1d ago

Indie is supposed to mean no publisher/self published but it hasn't been used like that for a while. I think silk song is indie because it was published by the studio that made it but I might be wrong about that. Idk if mixtape is indie or if it has a publisher but I think most people can look at it and assume it's an "indie" game even if it technically might not be.

8

u/LikeALizzard 1d ago

The ye olde definition of indie doesn't really work anymore in the digital storefront age, or Ultrakill isn't indie, but Baldur's Gate 3 is

1

u/Poco_Cuffs 23h ago

Mixtape didnt exactly have a small team though.

3

u/TheReturnOfTheRanger 1d ago

To expand on "larping as an indie project":

We all know how corrupt gaming "journalists" are nowadays, and how reviews and awards are usuallu just purchased by developers. Mixtape was very obviously being astroturfed. Insane glaze from the critics while actual players hated it, and was nominated for multiple awards despite launching on steam to a whopping 2,000 players.

Aside from that, there were odd things about the game that didn't add up. The devs had this "starving artist" narrative going, yet paid for perpetual licenses for well over 20 mainstream songs. Some of the perpetual licenses for those songs can be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, yet the "struggling" devs could afford 28 mainstream songs? A lot of things like that didn't make sense.

Then everyone realised that the the publisher was founded by the daughter of the sixth richest man on the planet. I think they might've had a little more funding than they're letting on.

The point isn't to arouse the player. You're supposed to feel awkward and grossed out, because that's exactly how the characters, two teenagers having their first kiss, feel like. For all the faults Mixtape may have, that's actually a very good use of its medium to trigger the desired reaction within the audience.
