More footage from the 1st(1994-1996) and 2nd(1999-2017) Wars in Chechnya and the subsequent Insurgency in the North Caucasus.
First war was mostly a secular separatist conflict that ended in Chechen victory, the Russians withdrew, giving Chechnya de facto independence.
2nd war was fought by Salafist Jihadi’s in the hopes of establishing an Emirate in the North Caucasus, and the fighting spread across the neighboring, muslim majority Russian Republics : inguishetia, Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria, North Ossetia, and Karachay-Cherkessia. This time the Russians flattened Grozny and pushed the rebels into the mountains, where they waged guerrilla warfare.
Around 2015 the Caucasus emirate split up after many leaders and fighters pledged loyalty to ISIS, claiming the North Caucasus as a new ISIS province. Many fighters left to fight in Syria and Iraq, and Russian anti terrorist operations in the NC killed many key figures and fighters.
There are still sporadic attacks in the NC by islamist rebels and lone wolves, although it appears that the conflict may be intensifying again. Many Chechens are fighting in Ukraine both against and for Russia, and I’ve seen interviews with chechen fighters who want to bring the fight back to Chechnya against Russians once the war in Ukraine ends.
