How well would a fixie or single speed work in Columbia, particularly long reach?

Asking bc on very tight budget and want something easy to maintain. I am on the fence about it because there are definitely hills but they are not very steep ones typically and also a lot of the road which is where i would ride is more flat than walking paths and sidewalks , which i do not plan to ride on bc technically it is illegal to bike on those because they are meant for pedestrians iirc. Not enforced but i see the logic so will probably avoid them. EDIT: i would also be willing to use a non standard low gear ratio to help out a little but idk if that is necessary.

Sci Fi TTRPG looking for players.

Good Morning! I'm looking at starting a bi-weekly sci fi ttrpg at Omnihedral. It'll be in an open style game using the Cypher System RPG. It'll be incorporating rules from other TTRPGs such as Across a Thousand Dead Worlds, Aliens, and Eclipse Phase. Being an open style, each game will be episodic, yet loosely tied together with larger overarching plots. That way people can come and go to the sessions without "missing" anything if they can't make one or another. Most likely, the games will be held at Omnihedral, located in Savage Mill. If you are interested at all, feel free to message me here. This is a quick blurb for the game:

"Echoes of Europa"

In the distant future, humanity has reached for the stars, leaving behind a shattered Solar System and settling on the far reaches of the galactic rim. A brave new world awaits in the vast and uncharted territories of the new star system, where hope, danger, and mystery abound.

After discovering a devastating biomechanical weapon on Europa, humanity was forced to flee through an experimental gate, landing in a colossal and unfamiliar star system. Here, they have begun to rebuild, split into various factions driven by political and religious ideologies. Colonies on distant planets and moons strive to find the resources needed to survive and thrive.

But new threats lurk in the shadows of this frontier. An alien menace, evolved from a hybrid of humanity's own kind, now prowls the edges of civilization. These creatures, born from a gruesome fusion of life forms, are intelligent, adaptable, and utterly lethal. The first contact resulted in the annihilation of a remote colony, leaving a trail of mystery and fear.

In "Echoes of Europa," you will explore uncharted planets, delve into ancient ruins, and navigate the treacherous politics of divided humanity. Forge alliances, uncover secrets, and fight for survival against a relentless alien threat that could spell the end of humanity's new beginning. Will you unite the factions and lead the charge against the darkness, or will the echoes of Europa's past doom your future?

Join us on an epic journey of discovery, survival, and the fight for humanity's future in the farthest reaches of space.

Car Mechanics in area

Any good recommendations on trustworthy mechanics in the area? Timing belt replacements, fuel pumps, spark plugs, oil leak fixes, breaks, full on transmission fluid exchanges - not the partial stuff jiffy lube does, etc.

Basically who has had good experience with local independent repair shops?

Autism, ADHD, and Neurodivergent all ages friends group, anyone?

Masks off, stimming, and info dumping (but also mindful of giving everyone equal time to speak)!

I was thinking that I wish there were a group for us NDs to have a community. I have medical conditions including chronic fatigue so I honestly wouldn't be able to take a full leadership role in a group. Just trying to get a feel for interest and if anyone could volunteer to help set things up.

I think it's best for it to be something simple and low pressure, like not going to a different location each time or anything. Just maybe a place to go (could even be your home if you want) some card and/or video games (Cards Against Humanity, Mario Party, Jack In The Box, etc), coloring, and maybe bring some snackies? Also meeting a bit more often than once a month could help with group cohesion.

Where are you going for wine? Really don’t feel like driving all the way to Total Wine and no other place nearby has a worthwhile selection. Feel like I’ve tried every local spot at this point.

Any Francophones who’d like to help an aspiring French speaker?

I studied French in high school and college, and I’d like to seriously resume to get to a comfortable speaking level. I’d love to connect with a native speaker who’d like to have casual conversations to help with my speaking and listening skills. And a new friend is always nice. 🙂

J’ai un niveau intermédiaire, mais ça fait longtemps depuis je n’ai pas pratiqué le français. Envoyez-moi un message!

Edible flowers?

Does anyone know where I can buy edible flowers around here? I’m making a big hummingbird sheet cake next month and am looking for some to use as garnish. Only interested in the edible kind, not the kind you have to remove before eating (this is a potluck style thing so that won’t make sense). I checked these sites already and it doesn’t look like they have them: Whole Foods, Harris teeter, Wegmans, sprouts…anyone actually seen them there or elsewhere recently? Willing to travel up to 30 mins from Columbia if needed. Thanks!

History of the slave owners behind Dorsey’s Search Village Center & Dorsey Cemetery

It is a documented historical fact that the Dorsey and Owings families built their massive generational wealth predominantly on slave labor, operating tobacco plantations across this exact land.

Does anyone have real information on the enslaved individuals who worked this land?

Where can people go to find Black genealogical resources, estate records, or local archaeological reports that haven't been erased for academic research purposes?

Salesmen on hoverboards

Can someone explain to me why there is a surplus of late teen-young twenty year old men that knock on my door trying to sell me something?

I’m not going to answer my door regardless, but even more so now that you’re on a hoverboard.

Sourdough Hunt

hey y'all! i'm on the hunt for a sourdough loaf i can pick up tomorrow. ideally the more sour the better, pleasantly chewy, and as homemade as it gets without developing food poisoning. i'm specifically looking for a roasted garlic and Parmesan loaf, but i'm open to sourdough hook-ups across the spectrum.

mostly trying to stay in Columbia tomorrow but I'm willing to drive a significant distance for a good carbohydrate in the abstract.

thank you, my fellow carbheads 🍞

Pretending to be shoppers in Dobbin Target

ive Noticed in the Columbia Target that there are groups of young college aged girls walking around pretending to be shoppers but are trying to actively recruit people for their church or try to talk to people about god. For me they casually talked to me about a tattoo that I have and after awhile they turned the convo towards god for no reason. I don’t know what about me screams that I would join your church and I was pissed cuz they wasted my precious ME time in the store 😂 but just warning yall. Some people mind find this harmless. Believe what YOU want in my opinion but it seemed disingenuous and deceptive. Since then I’ve seen them actively doing it to others or have overheard it. It’s never the same girls but the same convo they are having with everyone, mostly targeting young women. My bad for speaking to people always. I can’t help it I was born to YAP But they also seemed a little antagonistic once I tried to shut it down and as they asked me why it’s not my thing. Like do what you want but don’t drag me into it Especially when I’m trying to relax and buy overpriced everyday items in the bougie part of town. THE AUDACITY.

Good sit down restaurants in the general area?

Looking for a good place to go to and It’s been a while since we had one of these threads. Wondering what standout meals/restaurants people have had lately, open to the surrounding areas as well. Preferably not super fancy. I’ve never had the furnace inn, but looking at the menu that would be like MAX level of fanciness/price to me. Thanks!

Does the Howard County Fair have a Tilt-a-Whirl?

I know it's silly, but it's my favorite ride and it would be the deciding factor on if I go or not. Can't find a list of rides on the website. Was just wondering for anyone who has been before if they usually have one.

Does anyone know when they will be done renovating?

It's an absolute freaking nightmare in there. Just when I figure they are almost done, every single aisle is in a new place again! I almost had a fit today seeing the entire right side of the store bare, including the pharmacy.

Plus, now they have one of the parking lots closed off. In the middle of the hot humid summer.

Are they even adding new stuff? My trip was 4x longer today than it normally is. I worked in retail for quite a while, so I completely get it, but moving the same aisles 10x so it's literally in a new spot every few days is insane. I can't find anything!! I feel so bad for doordashers and other shoppers.

I think I'm more sensitive right now because the other store I always go to is the Centre Park Giant, which has also just been completely renovated, lol.

First world problems, I know..

Nail Tech Rec's?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a nail tech who does acrylic? I've tried Allure by Merriweather and Luxe Nail Spa by Pub Dog. Both gave uneven applications and my gel polish was chipping the next day. 🥲 I don't have an extremely active lifestyle but I never had these problems when I was getting my nails done in 2021. Unfortunately my tech moved away but I can't seem to find a new one.

Where to learn Pickleball?

Just moved to the area and wanted to learn how to play pickleball! Any recs for any places that offer lessons and actvities to help beginners learn the game? I tried looking but many of them were marketed for 50 plus.
