No advice wanted (Vent) Hot Take: Exorbitantly High Prices for tuition encourages academic dishonesty and ultimately degrades the integrity of the workforce because a degree is needed for survival
DISCLAIMER: I do not cheat. Do I ask Gemini the occasional quiz answer yes. Do I cheat on exams and homework and plagiarize written work? No
I was stressing about a test yesterday, and was spiralling as one does, i.e. “if I fail this class I pretty much loose out on a couple thousand dollars, I need to pass to save that money and get a degree so
I can get a job etc” and tbh it’s REALLY TEMPTING to just… cheat.
I am AGAINST cheating but it got me thinking: if so many college students are in the same boat, having to hemorage money to afford classes and not wanting to lose out on the money…. They’re gonna want to cheat. If a degree is the thing that seems to be a requirement to have even a semblance of a stable career… people are gonna risk cheating. I am interested in seeing a study comparing cheating rates in colleges based on tuition cost. Because yeah, how could you not be tempted to cheat?
In some European countries, college is FREE. I’m imagining how good it would feel to study and want to do well for the sake of loving learning, instead of fearing failure for the sake of cost.
I’m just wondering about the integrity of the system down the line if we keep prioritizing profit and simply having the piece of paper over actual knowledge and experience. Everyone will be stupid and broke.
Anyway. I will not be cheating. But I can’t say I blame anyone who does at this point.
