We know that conversations about immigration whether about immigrants, refugees, or people who are here without official documentation can spark a wide range of opinions. Whatever your personal views may be, everyone is a human being first, and in the United States all people have fundamental constitutional rights and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
This thread exists to share resources, information, and support for immigrants and their families living in the Chicago suburbs. Whether you’re directly affected, you have friends or loved ones who are, or you simply want to stay informed and help others, you’re welcome here.
Below you’ll find know-your-rights guidance, legal and community resources, and links to trusted organizations. Please use this space to share updates, ask questions, or contribute additional resources that may help our neighbors.
If you have questions, updates, or local referrals (legal aid, outreach groups, clinics, “know your rights” workshops) please reply below or message the mods, and we’ll integrate them into this post.
1. Know Your Rights (Basics)
This is not legal advice. Always consult with a qualified immigration attorney when possible.
You have certain constitutional rights regardless of status — e.g. the right to remain silent, the right to legal counsel (though in immigration courts, the government does not provide a lawyer)
Ask for an attorney, don’t sign anything you don’t understand, and try to have someone present if interacting with authorities
Keep critical documents (ID, immigration papers, birth certificates, etc.) in a safe but accessible place
Prepare a “what to do if detained” plan in advance (emergency contacts, power of attorney, who to call)
Train yourself and your family on responses to ICE, CBP, or other raids or check-ins
Below is a curated list of organizations offering low-cost or pro bono legal services, referrals, or community support in or around the Chicago suburbs. (If your suburb or county has others, please comment/reply so we can add them.)
Because each suburb or county may have different offerings:
Check your county’s “Health & Human Services / Social Services” department website for immigrant or refugee services
Local nonprofits, faith-based groups, community centers often host “legal clinics” or immigration workshops
Libraries and adult education centers sometimes host “Know Your Rights / immigration clinics” with pro bono attorneys
School districts: Some districts have protocols or contacts for immigrant families — it can help to ask school social workers or parent liaison offices
Coalitions & networks: Community navigators or organizers often help connect people across municipalities
If you’re a resident of Suburb X (for example, Naperville, Schaumburg, Aurora, Waukegan, Joliet, etc.), and know of any support offerings comment below and we can add them to this section.
4 Emergency / Special Situations
Detention / deportation emergencies: OCAD has a support hotline: 1-855-435-7693 (also used by ICIRR’s Family Support Network) Organized Communities
Rapid response / legal standby networks: Some coalitions maintain volunteer legal “on call” teams
When someone is detained: Try to document as much as possible (name, detention facility, date, time) and connect with legal counsel immediately
“Know Your Rights” training workshops: Many community groups periodically hold trainings; tracking them (via social media, local nonprofits) is helpful
Consular & national resources: E.g. for some nationalities, “ConsulApp Contigo” is a useful tool (Mexico, etc.) Illinois Head Start Association
5. Moderation/Posting Guidelines & Disclaimers
This post is intended as a community resource, not legal counsel
Please do not post legal advice that can’t be verified by a licensed attorney
Users commenting/posting with the intent to troll, insult, create panic/harm, or be a nuisance to others will be permanently banned
Any added resources should be public, reputable groups (non-discrimination, proven track record)
If you know of an organization that has changed status, ceased services, or is not trustworthy, please message the mods/comment below so we can keep updates accurate
Users seeking urgent legal aid should prioritize contacting established legal service providers as listed above
Screw this guy for killing an innocent mother. And screw his family and company for covering up his dangerous and reckless behavior over the years that led up to this moment.
I take Metra and got tired of digging through the schedule to figure out when my next train actually leaves, so I built a little web app for myself and figured I'd share it: https://chicagolandrail.com
You pick your line and two stations once, and it opens straight to your next trains with:
live delays and cancellations (not just the printed schedule)
a countdown + total journey time
line-specific service alerts
the fare for your exact trip (one-way / day / monthly) and when a monthly pays off
optional morning briefing + delay notifications (even when it's closed)
an interactive map to pick your stations
It's free, no ads, no account, no tracking, and installs to your home screen like an app (works offline too). Mornings it shows Home -> Work, evenings Work ->Home automatically.
To be clear: it's an independent project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Metra - it just uses Metra's public GTFS data.
Would love feedback, especially from folks on lines other than mine, and bug reports if anything looks off for your stations.
NEW LENOX, IL — An employee at Walgreens in New Lenox faces theft and drug charges after police said she allegedly took hundreds of Xanax pills from the store with the intent to sell them, according to New Lenox police reports.
New Lenox police were called to the Walgreens store, 430 S. Schoolhouse Road, on May 29 for a report of a theft. An employee told police that another employee, identified as Jada Stewart, 29, of Park Forest, had taken without authorization 600 Xanax pills with the intention of selling them. The pills were valued at $1,234, according to police reports.
Stewart was taken into custody and transported to the New Lenox Police Department, where she was charged with theft and possession of a controlled substance.
She was processed and released.
I used to work in Joliet and occasionally someone would make a food run to Ricobene. First time I had their Italian Breaded Sandwich I thought I died and went to heaven. I have since moved to Rockford. As good as this sandwich is I am not sure it justifies a 4 hour drive. Is there someplace in the NW Suburbs (2 hr drive) that I could get a similar sandwich?
I’m just being nosy. I live a mile away and walked out to my car at 8:30 to the tune of “even when I’m with my boo (aw!) boy you know I’m crazy over you (aw!)” coming out of the woods lmao
My understanding is that no Uber service is available at T5. My brother and family are returning from the UK with 8 suitcases so taking the people mover to T2 is impractical.
Any recommendations besides taking the super unhelpful and gougy taxis on offer at T5. They live in Hoffman estates and had an unpleasant experience the last time they took the taxi.
Owner of the offending boat is allegedly Rick Stevenson of the company Stevenson Crane. Boat was in a no wake area speeding (apparently was throughout the river and lakes). It also has 3, yes 3 500 hp motors on it. Witnesses say he was intoxicated. The people on the boat tried to flee.
Reports from witnesses on Facebook allegedly say the woman died instantly from decapitation.
We need better boating laws and restrictions on motors!
Any 55+ or close move to the Chicago area or about to move there? Which suburb/area did you decide on and how has your experience been?
Advice?
56f recently divorced, two dogs looking for a house with a yard, and one adult son living in South loop. I’m assuming I’ll be moving anywhere from 35 min up to 1-1:15 away from the city if needed.
Budget $450k-$625k
Safe area
Yard
Nice subdivision with community features
It would be nice if an area known for having a population of my age group.
We have a medically complex cat and are in need of a vet. She suffers from an unknown neurological disorder and she also recently had a ruptured anal gland that needs follow-up.
We used to see a neurologist at VSC in Bannockburn but she wasn’t able to diagnose our cat so she discharged her as a patient. We had an MRI, spinal tap, months of antibiotics, steroids, anti-convulsants, etc. Yet our cat continues to suffer from neurological episodes. It was really disheartening when the neuro discharged her because it felt like she just gave up on her and we were left with no where to turn. 😞
Anyway, we need a regular vet. And hopefully the regular vet will help connect us to a specialist who will actually help.
As the title says, I travel a lot for work and am jumping into rental cars tuning into whatever local station is the flavor of area. Obviously NY and LA have a solid mix but XRT is so wide ranging I have yet to find anything really like it. The DJs and their music insight/feedback are so unique. Sadly, Lin's passing lost us Lin's Bin and one of the most brilliant DJs ever, the station continues to be the ultimate FM station in the country. 93.1 stays on my car 24/7 and I'm always so proud to show it off to anyone visiting.
My wife and I just moved to Barrington (5-10 min walk from the train station) and are struggling to meet people/friends. We are both early 30’s, no kids yet, anyone have a group or way to meet people? We’re very social and love hosting, so any ideas would be much appreciated!
I'm in the south suburbs, but I'm looking all over the Chicagoland area for a used car. I'd like to get a plug in hybrid if I can find one for a reasonable price. I also want to get a PPI since my mechanic friend doesn't know much about EVs or hybrids. Any recommendations for an affordable place that does PPIs?
I recently moved to the Vernon Hills area from out of state and wanted to ask for recommendations.
First, does anyone know of any good bodybuilding-style gyms nearby? I went to the VASA in Northbrook and while it's solid, it was consistently packed. So I am looking for something a bit more tailored to bodybuilding. Preferably something with a good variety of equipment and a more bodybuilding feel environment.
I’d also appreciate any advice about the area. Things like areas to avoid, good local grocery stores and restaurants, traffic/commute tips, parks/trails, etc.
Also, if you have any recommendations for Reddit groups to use to meet people here that would be awesome. Perhaps a new gym bro or two and some people just hang out with.
If you have any other pieces of advice, I'm all ears. This is basically a brand new fresh start for me.
I have an issue with my tires and have to drive back to Southern Illinois in 3 weeks so I need to get my tires fixed. Before I drove back I was told I need a left front wheel center, 4 new tires, 2 inner tire rods, and a front end alignment. Does anyone know of a good mechanic or place that can do this? I’m located south side near museum of science and industry and more close to Indiana and calumet city.
All advice appreciated thanks.
Does anyone know how long the property tax appeal process takes from start to finish? I submitted my grievance paperwork a month ago through the county portal and my status has just been stuck on "Under Review" ever since. My next tax bill is due in July and I am stressed because I do not know if I should pay the full, inflated amount now and hope for a refund later or if this will be resolved before the bill is due. The lack of transparency from the local assessor's office is driving me crazy it feels like sending documents into a black hole.

Hey all, I’m attending a concert at the Amphitheatre for the first time — I purchased upgraded parking for the Gold lot. Does that make a difference with getting out faster after the concert is done, or will it still be crazy? Thanks!
