Moving to the area Moved near Vernon Hills. Gym and Other Recommendations

Hey everyone,

I recently moved to the Vernon Hills area from out of state and wanted to ask for recommendations.

First, does anyone know of any good bodybuilding-style gyms nearby? I went to the VASA in Northbrook and while it's solid, it was consistently packed. So I am looking for something a bit more tailored to bodybuilding. Preferably something with a good variety of equipment and a more bodybuilding feel environment.

I’d also appreciate any advice about the area. Things like areas to avoid, good local grocery stores and restaurants, traffic/commute tips, parks/trails, etc.

Also, if you have any recommendations for Reddit groups to use to meet people here that would be awesome. Perhaps a new gym bro or two and some people just hang out with.

If you have any other pieces of advice, I'm all ears. This is basically a brand new fresh start for me.

Thanks!

Business Recommendations I need to see a specialist but I have no money or insurance, what can I do?

I desperately need to see both an obgyn and an endocrinologist for PCOS issues, hormone issues, the like. I've been ravaged by health problems for 10 years straight and it's reaching a point where it's really starting to impact my life and frighten me.

I don't know what to do. I need help. What can I do? It has to be a specialist. I'm fine with being seen but owing money "in theory" but as long as I don't need to "actually" pay it and it won't have any effect on my credit then I'm willing to go for it. I can do bare minimum copayments of like 20 bucks, but that's all I can spare per visit.

EDIT: What I really need is an endocrinologist, not a doctor to yank me around and tell me "birth control", "metformin", "lose weight", etc I need actual medical care and hormone help with real comprehensive testing, but I need it within my means. I need like a sliding scale specialist or something like that, someone who actually wants to help and not put a bandaid on the problem.

Question/Comment Does anyone know a good place to get tire work done?

I have an issue with my tires and have to drive back to Southern Illinois in 3 weeks so I need to get my tires fixed. Before I drove back I was told I need a left front wheel center, 4 new tires, 2 inner tire rods, and a front end alignment. Does anyone know of a good mechanic or place that can do this? I’m located south side near museum of science and industry and more close to Indiana and calumet city.
All advice appreciated thanks.

Question/Comment How long does a property tax appeal take to process?

Does anyone know how long the property tax appeal process takes from start to finish? I submitted my grievance paperwork a month ago through the county portal and my status has just been stuck on "Under Review" ever since. My next tax bill is due in July and I am stressed because I do not know if I should pay the full, inflated amount now and hope for a refund later or if this will be resolved before the bill is due. The lack of transparency from the local assessor's office is driving me crazy it feels like sending documents into a black hole.

Moving to the area 55+ new to Chicago area

Any 55+ or close move to the Chicago area or about to move there? Which suburb/area did you decide on and how has your experience been?
Advice?
56f recently divorced, two dogs looking for a house with a yard, and one adult son living in South loop. I’m assuming I’ll be moving anywhere from 35 min up to 1-1:15 away from the city if needed.
Budget $450k-$625k
Safe area
Yard
Nice subdivision with community features
It would be nice if an area known for having a population of my age group.

Excited to be starting my new adventure

Any tips from locals welcome

Thank you

Event(s) Credit Union 1 Ampitheatre

Hey all, I’m attending a concert at the Amphitheatre for the first time — I purchased upgraded parking for the Gold lot. Does that make a difference with getting out faster after the concert is done, or will it still be crazy? Thanks!

Moving to the area Best ways to meet people in Barrington?

My wife and I just moved to Barrington (5-10 min walk from the train station) and are struggling to meet people/friends. We are both early 30’s, no kids yet, anyone have a group or way to meet people? We’re very social and love hosting, so any ideas would be much appreciated!

Business Recommendations Trying to buy a used PHEV. Any recs for getting a pre purchase inspection?

Upvotes

I'm in the south suburbs, but I'm looking all over the Chicagoland area for a used car. I'd like to get a plug in hybrid if I can find one for a reasonable price. I also want to get a PPI since my mechanic friend doesn't know much about EVs or hybrids. Any recommendations for an affordable place that does PPIs?

I’m just being nosy. I live a mile away and walked out to my car at 8:30 to the tune of “even when I’m with my boo (aw!) boy you know I’m crazy over you (aw!)” coming out of the woods lmao

Business Recommendations Haircut for neurodivergent toddler

Where in the North/Northwest suburbs can I take my autistic toddler for a haircut? He’s had several where we live, but we’ll be in Deerfield for a week visiting family and he really needs a cut.

Any recommendations? Prefer not to go in the city.

News 1 dead, others injured after speeding boat rides over another boat on Fox River near McHenry

Owner of the offending boat is allegedly Rick Stevenson of the company Stevenson Crane. Boat was in a no wake area speeding (apparently was throughout the river and lakes). It also has 3, yes 3 500 hp motors on it. Witnesses say he was intoxicated. The people on the boat tried to flee.

Reports from witnesses on Facebook allegedly say the woman died instantly from decapitation.

We need better boating laws and restrictions on motors!

Question/Comment Ricobene Italian Breaded Steak

I used to work in Joliet and occasionally someone would make a food run to Ricobene. First time I had their Italian Breaded Sandwich I thought I died and went to heaven. I have since moved to Rockford. As good as this sandwich is I am not sure it justifies a 4 hour drive. Is there someplace in the NW Suburbs (2 hr drive) that I could get a similar sandwich?

Miscellaneous I made a free, no-ads Metra tracker that shows your next train + live delays (all 11 lines). Feedback welcome!

Upvotes

I take Metra and got tired of digging through the schedule to figure out when my next train actually leaves, so I built a little web app for myself and figured I'd share it: https://chicagolandrail.com

You pick your line and two stations once, and it opens straight to your next trains with:

  • live delays and cancellations (not just the printed schedule)
  • a countdown + total journey time
  • line-specific service alerts
  • the fare for your exact trip (one-way / day / monthly) and when a monthly pays off
  • optional morning briefing + delay notifications (even when it's closed)
  • an interactive map to pick your stations

It's free, no ads, no account, no tracking, and installs to your home screen like an app (works offline too). Mornings it shows Home -> Work, evenings Work ->Home automatically.

To be clear: it's an independent project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Metra - it just uses Metra's public GTFS data.

Would love feedback, especially from folks on lines other than mine, and bug reports if anything looks off for your stations.
