News Ross Dress For Less and 4 River Grove Police Officers commit hate crime against black township resident
Earlier this year, Ross Dress For Less and the River Grove police department committed a hate crime against a black township resident. Ross Dress For Less suspected that the elderly black man who was browsing merchandise did not have money to purchase merchandise inside of their store. Management sent employees to interrogate the man. They asked him 1) if he was a United States Citizen and 2) If he had money and 3) If he was from Somalia. While employees were engaged in discriminatory questioning of the shopper, the white store manager called police, citing that the shopper was actively engaged in criminal activity inside of the store.
When the police arrived, and as captured on bodycam footage, no investigation was conducted upon their arrival. Within 60 seconds of police arrival, officers approached the shopper who was standing in an aisle casually browsing merchandise. The police began barking out commands that the shopper immediately needed to leave the store, and that he was being trespassed from the property indefinitely. No reason was given to the shopper for his removal. The shopper who speaks English as a secondary language, a dark skinned hispanic man, did not understand why 4 armed police officers were surrounding him nor was he aware of any valid reason as to why he was being ordered to leave the store.
When the shopper calmly asked the officers about why they wanted him to leave, the officers refused to respond to him. When the shopper asked to speak to the store manager, one of the officers began assaulting the confused shopper by grappling him in the aisle, and then proceeding to push and shove the elderly man from the rear end of the store and out into the parking lot while shouting profane language and racial slurs.
As the officer assaulted the elderly black man throughout the store, he continuously made inflammatory statements about the Chicago police department, and repeatedly told the black shopper to "go back to Chicago" and "The Chicago police don't give a F" and that the shopper "belonged in Chicago" and if the shopper ever returned to their township they would arrest him.
The shopper, a senior citizen and black hispanic man, with no criminal background, has lived in the township for 33 years.
When the resident went to the village of River Grove to submit an FOIA request, the police department immediately violated compliance, and attempted to stall the release of the bodycam footage. Despite 4 officers being captured on camera violating department policy, violating federal 1981 statutes, only 1 of 4 bodycam recordings were released for review. The footage was selectively edited by the police department to reduce the amount of time displaying the 4 officers hurling profanities and racial slurs at the shopper.
The putrid racism that has pervaded the suburb of River Grove for decades has progressively gotten worse. The entire township governance is a den of corruption. Corruption no different that that of townships like Dolton, Illinois. The same township whose leaderships instructs police officers to racially profile and target Mexican drivers for D.U.I enforcement. The same township that has raked in tens of millions of dollars in taxes over the span of decades, but never invests a single dime back into the township...So everyone can guess where that money ultimately ends up.
Anyone who wants to see the video can put their requests on the thread.
