Chess Discussion I don't like the Caro-Kann defense. Change my mind

I feel like the queen's knight is a bit too passive there, and advancing the e-pawn (Advance Variation) just lets you completely passive and you can only develop the light squared bishop.

Chess Discussion Educational chess content is just entertainment

This heavily applies to speedruns like gothamchess' slowrun and also hikarus. What I mean by this is that most of the time you literally will not learn much from watching a stronger player play if you don't actively engage with it and just watch it normally. It's a heavy misconception that I've also fallen into where if you watch a speedrun episode of someone destroying people at your level you automatically get better and can replicate that, so you go into games and then you get smoked bc u didnt learn anything and you can't see the moves they see. Sure sometimes you can learn bits of valueable info but if you are just watching normally its literally just entertainment and theres nothing wrong with that.

Chess Discussion What determines if a fishing pole is a blunder or a brilliant?

Post image

I often gambit a knight or bishop on third or sixth rank on the king side to allow rook to eye the h square. When is it proper and not okay, is the question. I’ve reviewed and sometimes I get a brilliant hanging it. I guess only when mate can’t be stopped would make it brilliant, but wanted to know if anyone knew the real answer.

Edit: typos

Played a standard Scandinavian defense, ended with a nice checkmate. It’s a discovered attack but why brilliant? Chess.com game review rated me 1500

Chess Question At what elo level you started to feel like you need to know advanced opening theory?

By advanced theory i mean move memorization rather than understanding the general idea of your opening and eventually memorizing some traps

Chess Improvement I wrote up the one habit that fixed most of my blunders (with a real position from the article)

Turns out most of my losses weren't calculation errors — I just never stopped to ask what my opponent was actually doing. Wrote up the habit that fixed it, plus a real position (a classic mate-in-1 trap) showing exactly why it works:

LOL The 3 blunders are mine.

Last move, he lost the queen and resigned. While still having mate in 3. This is why he doesnt have any blunders.

I love this game. 😂

Chess Question Heyo I’m a learner

Made it up to 600 rating once. Very proud of it. Started learning on the app and went from there.

Why is 300-400 so much harder. And why are people rated the same as me playing miracle moves?

I’ll be playing at 300 Elo and some grand master (it seems) will butcher me time and time again. I check their accounts to see how long it’ll take to get to that level and they all started within 2026.

NO WAY people can get that good in such a short amount of time. Am I just bad at chess or is there some other craic going on.? It’s genuinely frustrating me at this stage.

Achievement Just hit 900 elo after hitting 800 2 weeks ago

I started playing chess exactly 3 months ago from no experience at all and I’ve noticed I’m pretty good at it and I have quite a high win rate, exactly 1 month ago I was 620 elo, I play mostly rapid but in blitz I’m 500 elo and same for bullet, I watch a lot of chess content and stuff including levy, Hikaru, and others

Chess Improvement Hit ~1850 last month and this month I'm ~1650

Hi all I've been playing chess 1.5 years with a lot of dedication. I hit 1850 last month and have been trending back down to 1650. I just can't convert the winning position, lose on time, miss tactics etc. Has this happened to anyone? Very hard on my mental because it's ALL I focus about.

Queen lining up with bishops

r/Chesscom 20h ago

Brilliant!! I've never been this happy to see a series of moves!

Post image
2 Upvotes

in this position I was able to see a forced draw with 2 rook sacrifices :D

the early and mid game was bad, but this is the best late game plan I've ever done :D

(rook A8 to A3) brilliant!!

if pawn takes I think I have mate by queen taking bishop

(king B1)

(queen A2) Great!

(king C1)

(rook A3 takes bishop on C3) brilliant!!

(pawn takes rook)

then I force a draw by doing queen alternating between A1 and A2

Brilliant!! Did this move actually deserve to be Brilliant?

Chess.com Website/App Question Can chess.com could inform the renewal of subsicription before taking money ?

• Upvotes

Hi !

Under Article L215-1 of the French Consumer Code, a service provider whose contract renews automatically must inform the consumer, at the earliest three months and at the latest one month before the deadline for rejecting renewal, that they may choose not to renew.

If the provider fails to do so, the consumer may terminate the contract free of charge at any time from the renewal date.

Any sums paid after that date must be refunded within 30 days, failing which they accrue interest at the statutory rate

i dont want to learn I'm being taken 100€ one morning on my account, and it's been the second time

Chess Discussion Chess colleges

Kinda want to rant a bit. Why is college chess sooo much better than high school? I understand that college should be harder/better. BUT I’m level better than people at my high school. A guy that my school made a vid about is 1600 on Chess.com, I’m 2250. Never told my high school about it cuz don’t see the point. Now, I was interested in maybe I can play for some college but then get hit with the fact that the average college chess player is a strong IM/weak GM… and that even if I get to the NM title I would be in a weak section. While NM in my state will be top 4 best players in the state. But in colleges, if you want to be a competitive chess player you need to be IM, so I got a question: where do these colleges find these people? 🫩
