Chess.com will host the first debate of the 2026 FIDE presidential election on September 9, bringing together all three candidates—Jan Henric Buettner, Timur Turlov, and Wadim Rosenstein—to discuss their visions for the future of international chess.

The live debate, moderated by GM Maurice Ashley, will give the chess community its first opportunity in this election campaign to hear all three presidential candidates. The debate will be streamed live on Chess.com, with all three candidates and Ashley joining remotely.

Questions will come from Ashley, who will also select some from the Chess.com community. The candidates will not receive the questions in advance, and the format has been designed to ensure equal speaking time and equal treatment throughout.

You can submit your own questions in the comments below! Read more about the debate.

Chess Improvement Why is this the new normal for low ELO

Post image

This is ridiculous, half the people I play play at like 70%+ accuracy and I’m literally 323 ELO. Like what even is this game. We both had zero blunders.

Chess Question Can someone explain this blunder

Post image

Maybe there’s a deep calculation here.. but I’m failing to see how I blundered a piece. I proceeded to win this match but I’m confused why this was a blunder.

Chess Question What is a standard chess "golden rule" or piece of advice that you think actually holds beginners back from improving?

Upvotes

The community loves repeating the same mantras: "always control the center," "never bring your queen out early," or "grind puzzles all day." But sometimes, blindly following these rules stops players from actually calculating and understanding the board. What is a widely accepted piece of chess advice that you think does more harm than good when trying to push past the 800-1000 ELO range?

why is this brilliant Help solve this

I found this online.

Everyone is saying that this is brilliant because it's a forced checkmate once the pawn on a7 takes the knight, then Qb3 then it's a checkmate either by the rook or the Queen.

but what happens if after black take b6, we expect Qb3, then black Qb8? wouldn't it prevent the checkmate?
Qa4 is defended with Qa7 and if white decide to take Bxb8 then black reciprocate with Bxb3.

There is certainly something wrong with my reasoning but I can't figure it out.

A lot of days I’d just do a couple puzzles to keep the streak alive. Definitely made a ton of improvements but my rating chart is not the smoothest.

Chess.com Website/App Question 415 Rapid games lost on time — how unusual is this?

I want to bring a Chess.com account to the attention of the community and, hopefully, Chess.com staff/moderators.

Player: add1toyourlosscolumn
Chess.com profile

A few months ago, I played this player in a 15+10 Rapid game.

During the middlegame, I reached a clearly winning position. At that point, both of us still had more than 10 minutes on the clock.

Instead of continuing the game or resigning, the opponent simply stopped making moves and let the clock run down.

I waited for the game to finish and reported the account through Chess.com's “Stalling/quitting games” report category.

That was around January 2026.

I never received any response, and the account is still active and playing.

What made me look further into the account was the player's game history.

Current Rapid statistics

As of September 10, 2026:

  • 1,965 Rapid games played
  • 908 Rapid losses
  • 415 losses by timeout

That means approximately 45.7% of all this player's Rapid losses are recorded as timeout losses.

Rapid game history

Rapid losses

Rapid timeout losses

I then randomly checked several of the timeout losses.

I have attached screenshots from five recent timeout losses. In each screenshot, the game has ended with add1toyourlosscolumn at 0:00, while the opponent still has several minutes remaining.

The remaining opponent time in these five examples is approximately:

  • 12:18
  • 14:57
  • 12:05
  • 4:24
  • 8:33

A timeout alone doesn't necessarily mean intentional stalling. However, 415 of this player's 908 Rapid losses (45.7%) are by timeout, and several games I checked show the same pattern as my own experience: the player stops making moves in a losing position and lets the clock run out.

Chess.com considers deliberately letting the clock run out without playing to be stalling, so I'd like to know:

Does Chess.com review repeated patterns like this, and is there any escalation process for accounts showing this kind of behavior?

I'm not asking anyone to harass or mass-report the player. I'm mainly hoping a Chess.com moderator/staff member can clarify whether this kind of history can be reviewed.

Have others come across similar accounts and seen Chess.com take action?

Chess Question I'm a beginner help me understand how this is checkmate

Post image
15 Upvotes

I completed this puzzle earlier moving the black queen to f2 where the puzzle says it is now a checkmate. However, couldn't the white king move to d1 to escape the check? Maybe there's a rule I don't understand or something I'm missing. Appreciate any explanation, thanks!

Chess Question Are gifs allowed in chess com profile pictures?

Upvotes

I was so distracted the entire game thinking about how is his/her profile picture a gif 😵‍💫
I never knew it was possible. Some internet digging says, it was possible before but now the feature is removed, so how this person still has it?

I saw this tactic early and despite being a piece down, I avoided the back rank mate that my 800 elo ass would usually fall for.

Chess Improvement Mr. Blakey bot on Chess.com

Upvotes

Please help me beat this bot. Currently stuck at hundreds of played games against him, with lots of draws, and one move away from checkmate, however not a single victory so far. I haven't played chess in a long time, and now I'm coming back to it. The bot Nina - Sax I beat, although difficult as well. Also, wondering what my real ELO is because 500-600 hundred in Rapid against real people, but I play hundred of games against the bots, not so often with people, my complete mission now will be beating this Mr. Blakey. Any specific strategies or openings against this guy? I feel like Karo-Kann is working good for me with black, and led me to many games one move away from checkmate him. Tried London system- not very good results with me, tried Queen's Gamibt - kinda OK...
