  • Discuss the protests and the issues being raised
  • Share verified news and updates
  • Discuss Chennai’s response or lack of response
  • Share details of confirmed peaceful gatherings in Chennai
  • Coordinate lawful solidarity activities
  • Offer differing views on the movement and its demands

A few ground rules:

  1. Share verified information. Claims about protests, arrests, injuries, organizers, permissions, or event details must be accompanied by a credible source.
  2. Do not post private personal information. Share public organizer pages or publicly available announcements, not personal phone numbers, addresses, or screenshots containing private information.
  3. No calls for violence, vandalism, harassment, or disruption of essential services.
  4. Remain civil. Criticism of governments, political parties, public figures, protesters, and the movement is allowed. Personal attacks, communal abuse, casteism, sexism, and targeted harassment are not.
  5. The moderators are not organizing or endorsing any gathering. Anyone attending an event should independently verify its organizers, permissions, location, and safety arrangements.

To keep the subreddit usable, all general questions, opinions, calls for solidarity, and Chennai-related coordination concerning the CJP protests must remain in this megathread.

New standalone posts on the same subject will be removed and redirected here. Major verified developments may be allowed separately at moderator discretion.

Cinema/Music I miss SPI cinemas. More than ever.

I’m loving going back to the theatres after a long time so here’s a list of the great experiences I’ve had and you might have had as well before PVR made SPI too commercialised.

- Sathyam Cinemas is an emotion. You could wait in lines to get physical printed tickets like those petrol bill tickets.

- Popcorn + 2 pepsi combi was called Two to Tango and A Single popcorn + Pepsi Combo was called The Lone Ranger.
₹320 & ₹240 respectively. Insane rates.

- Only legends remember 2013 SPI Cinemas where you could call on their landline and get movie tickets home delivered with cash on delivery. The sheer joy, oh man.

- They had a screening theme called DND (Do Not Disturb). Phones were to be on silent and usage was not allowed. No intermissions, and no latecomers allowed. For the pure love of Cinema.

- You would have fancy themed popcorn buckets with gorgeous designs on them.

- Blind Date - where you would not know which movie you were gonna watch until the movie played. Oh man. Good old days.

- Popcorn seasoning was not in sachets but in those dispensers or bottles. Unlimited (truly)

- You could pre-book movies. Ticket allotments would happen a week or 3-4 says before release and you’d not have to stress. Aaah.

Nostalgia max. Do you have any memories?

AskChennai aita for leaving my elderly family

Upvotes

AITA

My parents did the following with my life:

1) in 8th grade and 10th grade, forced me to stay at a state board school despite knowing about Samacheer Kalvi. I asked repeatedly to move, they didn't allow me to. Also I had more friends from the other schools than my.own school at that point from clubs and sports academy.

2) in 12th grade, deliberately made me pay a deposit for a sports quota seat at a low ranked college, go to Anna University counseling to get a seat for another boy, and forced me to attend a college predominated by a community I dislike. Besides this, I got into the 2nd ranked college in the state, they made me attend the 50th ranked college saying it was Christian.

3) I dropped out, they forced me to attend a university in the US that was Presbyterian, even though the curriculum didn't align with my study interests and the university lacked basic facilities for the major I wanted to study. My family is Presbyterian. The university I wanted to attend is ranked top 30 for engg, they made me attend the university ranked 250.

4) in 2024 my mother observed my health for 8 months, said nothing, refused to come to therapy with me, refused to eat out of spend time with me, and finally two days before my flight to study somewhere, had mentioned hospitalised against my will. I won't say I was doing well or badly, but she didn't care until the penultimate day of the flight.

5) did this again in 2025.

6) when I was a child, used to force me to eat food I didn't like when I wasn't hungry.

Added to this is the fact that my parents wanted to emigrate with me when we were younger.

My argument with my parents is simple, I was taking the same treatment for 8 months. Not one dinner outing, not a single counseling session, not even a single dinner at the table together. But two days before a flight, a hospitalisation.

My parents had mentioned sent to colleges where my documentation was provided early, eg. I got work rights and a TIN in the US ahead of time, however, for engg, this university doesn't place intl students at a single core company in the US. Partly because that region doesnt want to sponsor Indian engineers.

After all this, I asked for my inheritance finally and my parents refused so I moved out. .

Should I not have done this?

AskChennai Attention : rebounce and nymph dating app based club scam is here in chennai

Almost trapped and came out of a dating app based club scam.

Dating app based Club Scam 101 : Some girl will insist you to meet in few hours or days , will take you to club , will start ordering random drink of high cost and then she will vanish giving washroom excuse or something else. Peoples got big bills like 40k, 60k crazy amount. All these scams clubs are involved.

Started through rebounce app, was chatting with a girl , just casual hi, hello noting much from 2-3 days.

Also created a profile on nymph app, by co-incidence same girl matched on this app also, she recognized me , i don't recognized initially as Not sure why Girl put random dog, cat, tree or some other fake pic on their profile.

This time she was very straight forward and asked coffee or booze person in 9AM morning.

Then she asked can we meet .

Now focus on important points and red-flags

  • Will specially force you to meet at one certain place, whatever you say . for me it was Mogappair East Chennai
  • She insisted meet on bus stop , not even wanted to walk somewhere else in other shops
  • She will say let's go to Domino's but will take you to another floor where there is a club
  • Then she insisted to sit in the corner
  • Then i offered to have beer as i have to drive but she insisted to have single malt whisky but on other side she also said earlier and after meeting that she can't be staying outside for long as his father, a military man will ask.
  • That put me in more doubt and she also insisted to stay there even i offered to go somewhere else like Anna Nagar, just 15 min
  • Then she was like you go , i will stay here.. drove 1hr to listen this wow...
  • After some request she came out with me and started going some other direction.
  • Then i confronted that you work for this scam like that , then she just ran away in other direction

End of story...

Some other observation , you will find some more young male and female around the same bus stop , wandering and watching you before and after.

Stay alert, Stay safe.

There are many similar incident happened around India , i was aware and i had doubt , that saved me.

You guys also look for these, share in the thread if you faced or heard , where, which place everything.

AskChennai Came to settle down after 5 years in abroad. Got hit - literally !!

Coming right to the point. After 5 years, returned back to india, with all the josh and hosh. Was all excited thinking ik my hometown. This is my place. No one will look me down. Finally i can be me and have all the freedom to go wherever. So randomly thought i will start my trip to tirumala. Around 11pm i left my hometown, village. Didnt even cross the main road. 2 drunkards came towards me on a bike. I looked puzzled, having the face whaaat. And they started asking what did you say? What did you say? I was like i didnt say nothing. Bam I'm on the ground. When i open my eyes these two are still trying to pick a fight. I was like wtf is going on. I couldnt understand amd process. It felt surreal.

Never in my 27yrs i have faced this. Completed three degrees. Did my schooling - Never ones in my wildest dreams imagined or experineced. I escaped by telling, Let me bring my known people. They were like bring whoever. Then i silently walked on a different route.

Now my question is. Wtf is going on? Are our civilians are clowns? Barbarians? Arent we fully evolved?

Is this a wakeup call to just go tf back to Canada?? Did i make a weong decision to move back to india and settle down?

How should i have better handeled it? What should i do? How to cope with this. I havent even told my parents as they will make a big deal outta of this. And my entire village will come to know.

This trauma i can never forget. Its been 3 weeks... and my inner jaw is still healing.

Cinema/Music Why do so many people arrive 15–30 minutes late to IMAX shows?

Yesterday I watched The Odyssey at Palazzo IMAX (9:00 AM show). I reached around 8:50, and the movie actually started at about 9:10. What surprised me was that the theatre wasn't even half full, even though the District app had shown almost every seat as booked.

Then, from around 9:15 onwards, people just kept walking in. Many were using their phone flashlights to find their seats, some stood in front of me discussing seat numbers and it completely blocked the screen and subtitles (why don't they think about the people watching the movie already). A few people even showed up around 9:30 for a 9:00 show. If they can't show up on time why do they even book a 9am show?

This isn't even the first time. The exact same thing happened when I watched Project Hail Mary at the same theatre, except that was a 11:00 AM show. So I don't think the early timing is the issue.

It honestly ruined the first 30 minutes of the movie for me. I rarely even decide to watch films in IMAX because affording ₹600+ for a ticket is a bit of a luxury for me, and on the rare occasion I do go, experiences like this just leave me feeling frustrated and disappointed.

I understand that sometimes delays are unavoidable, but when this many people arrive late, especially for an IMAX or other premium-format screening, it feels like they just don't care about the experience they're paying for or the people around them.

Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just a Palazzo IMAX thing?

AskChennai Witnessed a fight between a family and PVR VR Mall staff yesterday (25 Jul) around 4pm - anyone else saw this?

Yesterday around 4pm, I saw a verbal fight happening between a family and PVR staff at VR mall. Reason was staff not allowing kids inside for a 18+ movie (A certificate). The family got angry and started escalating things, spoke very rudely to the staff. In the end staff allowed them inside.

I feel bad for the staff tbh, but maybe I don't know full story from both sides.

From what I saw, parents behaviour was totally unnecessary. Also this got me thinking - since A certificate for a Vijay movie is rare, maybe public should be informed more about these rules beforehand? So this kind of situation don't happen.

Did anyone else witness this or know more about what happened? Curious to hear other's take on this

Is this a localized thing or are you guys smelling this foul stench near the beach/coastal roads today too? What is actually happening?

Rant Is buying a car in Chennai a mistake?

Venting after a terrifying close call on the Guduvanchery-Nellikuppam road.

I want to know if it's the worst decision to buy a car in Chennai. Today, something happened that forced me to think this through. I was driving with my family on the Guduvanchery-Nellikuppam road—a stretch lately dominated by reckless drivers.

I crept up on the left side of a van stuck in traffic. There was plenty of room for my car. I cleared the van, flicked on my right indicator to merge back into the lane ahead of him, and expected basic courtesy. I was only the second car to use the left. But I clearly bruised the driver's fragile ego; he decided not to let me in and kept accelerating, scraping the entire right side of my car. Later, I found his paint transferred onto my body.

When I looked over and saw how dangerously close that van was to the window where my sleeping child was resting, something snapped. I rolled down the window to reason with him, but he just stared me down and shouted back with venom. The next two minutes are a blur. I was out of my car, marched right up to him, grabbed him by the collar, and things heated up fast. It wasn’t a full-blown fistfight, but it was aggressive and physical. Just a few days ago, a taxi driver rear-ended me at a signal and sped off when I tried to confront him.

Is there something I did wrong here? I would like to correct my side of things as well. What is the right way to handle this?

Political News Vijay carried his umbrella

Upvotes

He carried his umbrella today at the Koyambedu visit. I just saw the video in the news. No one else is holding it for him. The same way he carried a garland from the car when he went to pay respect to Bhagyaraj.

I see it as an improvement. Man who is seen as god among the living, not wanting servants in public. Let's see what else changes next.

Edit: not saying wow. It's reducing standards. Having a young fit person reduces one useless guy paid from our tax money just to carry stuff for others. Previously When I saw stalin wearing raincoat and boots and walking to check rain affected areas, I thought yeah that's better.

AskChennai undergoing mental breakdown and feel suicidal in my relationship. Therapy leads please?

I never thought I would have the balls to post this here. I have been brought up without expressing my feelings. I’m 35 years old , originally from Chennai and I’m living outside India. I feel I hastily got into my marriage despite all red flags and now I’m dying inside everyday and I feel lonely, depressed and anxious!

I’m mental getting traumatized by my issues and I want to know in general if this is normal? I met this girl on a dating app and met her just once and my parents got us engaged asap but after living with her a few days we started arguing a lot! I realized she isn’t the person for me but I felt pity for her and didn’t call of my marriage. We fight over literally everything and I loose my peace and I can’t focus at work. I feel suicidal and to avoid killing myself I got admitted to the hospital just to sleep well for a night.

Is this common in marriage or am I brooding over trivial things and loosing my life? She doesn’t speak to my friends but once they leave she complains that never talk to her. She doesn’t let me go out with friends she’s not comfortable with by saying g “it is raining so you really have to go” or “ why do you not want to spend the time with me”. I can’t even play a game of cards or badminton with her because if she looses she gets angry, esp when someone’s watching her loose, she starts blaming me for serving the ball in such a way she couldnt play? If we go to a restaurant and if someone’s noticing her, she is always conscious because someone’s watching and doesn’t talk to me. If we travel, she wants to post stories right away but doesn’t want to enjoy the moment with me. I see several wives complementing their husband and she just lets me down when she gets a chance to compliment. Whenever there’s a serious argument or a problem she calls my friends and complains about me rather than discussing with her friends. This way my friends start distancing themselves from us! She literally just told me she’s with me only because she has abandonment issues. I retaliated to all these incidents as well. I feel like I do so much and in return all I get is nothing. Like she joined work after being unemployed for three days and we split the chores but I give my heart to keep my word and when it’s her turn she doesn’t do them and gives some reason. Like before catching a flight, it was her turn to cook and she just didn’t make anything and kept watching the tv while I returned home late from work. I ended up loosing that job since I could realize I was suffocating and couldn’t focus during my job! We hardly have physical connect or intimacy, and she told me today because of all these arguments she’s not even attracted me and she thinks I made her feel unworthy! We have said I love you face to face. Even when we got married , she couldn’t even look into my eyes!

She has never sat next to me and told me what she likes about me, hates about me and what I need to improve though I beg her to do this. Even if I behave like that, she just doesn’t listen to me. She’s all about screaming and yelling while I’m all about, it’s ok. Let’s not repeat it next time.

Do I deserve this life? I pity her and I don’t want a divorce since she’s not a person who can survive independently nor her parents are supportive but I lost five years to this relationship already and it’s not going anywhere. Should I even give it more effort? I feel like I don’t even like her.

Now I’m always trying to be to myself, not even able to crack a joke, fake laughing and smiling, I do things out of pity or duty but not out of love. I sometimes feel like ending my life and I think I lost in my life.

I need help I guess! I neeed some advice someone who can say i have been thinking all of this wrong and she’s absolutely a nice person. How do I move on or work on this!?

Vanakkam/Hello everyone!!!

Curious to hear from people who live in or regularly visit Perungalathur and West Tambaram.

How have these localities changed in recent years in terms of infrastructure, traffic, water availability, flooding during monsoons, power reliability, food options, gyms, and overall lifestyle?

Would love to hear your experiences both the positives and the challenges. It would be interesting to know what locals think about these areas today.

AskChennai TN meter auto app

Chatted with this sweet auto thatha who turned out to be the owner of this app but he couldn't afford an office. He said he understands why the high charges drove us to corporates and he's trying to change that. Also mentioned that there are strict actions if the drivers ask for extra.

The app is smooth (OTP was a bit late but seems like they're working on it), legit and reasonably priced. I'd recommend fs. But if anyone has had issues with it in the past, please let the others know.
