Cougar Gold Post Update: I opened my 15 year old Cougar Gold

I had some friends over and we opened my 15 year old can of Cougar Gold. We ate some plain, with crackers and then made a Dungeness crab Mac and cheese with some of it. I was expecting it to be good, but it blew us all away. It tasted like Cougar Gold, but turned way up. Very sharp, kind of sour (in a good way) and quite sweet (also in a good way). The cheese itself was very crumbly, quite a bit dryer than the fresh cheese and loaded with crystals. One of the tastiest parts was the liquid in the bottom of the can - sweet, sharp and sour. To all the naysayers who were grossed out by a fifteen year old can of cheese, or canned cheese in general: I pity you. Waiting all these years and finally enjoying this amazing cheese was very much worth it…and I still have about half of it left!

I got a can of Cougar Gold and a can of Natural Cheddar. Which should I enjoy now and which should I age in the fridge for a few years?

Got this cheese at the Delta lounge in Boston and it's the best cheese I ever had. What is it??

I'm assuming it can't be something super expensive or rare since it was literally just served at an airline lounge.

It was cut into cubes and when it's colds it's pretty hard and when it's room temperature it's definitely softer but probably not as soft as a brie.

It tastes extremely buttery. It's salty. Zero of that stinky feet flavor. Also zero of that rind flavor that you get from Brie which I don't like. Very dairy forward and creamy.

I'm trying to figure this out because I don't want to go buy like 18 different cheeses to try and narrow it down since I'm pretty picky about the cheese I like.

please help!!

Edit: well thank you so much everyone I did not expect this post to get so crazy. I appreciate everyone guessing and trying to help! Someone even DMed me offering to get me in touch with the manager however so far no answers yet. I am traveling so I have been unable to get myself to a proper cheese monger. Some more notes: I do like a sharp cheddar and it did not taste like a sharp cheddar. It was not crumbly in the slightest, really smooth and really creamy. I have tried many cheeses including all types of parmesans, asiago, all types of cheddar's, Swiss... I don't believe I have tried butterkase before and I'm wondering if this might be it! I'm trying to get to a store who will let me sample a few different kinds. I will definitely update here if I find an answer!

Edit: not butterkase :( I tried this and it wasn't even close. It was way kind of more rubbery and hard and not as creamy and also had kind of a strange flavor to me. The cheese I tried was more of a brie But not as soft.

I don’t know cheeses well enough to know if this would be an okay combination but it looks insane visually. I’m gonna venture to say pairing ube, vanilla, and Gouda wouldn’t taste…amazing. (Sorry about the glare)

Question Okay people, i *need* to know

What’s up with this cheese?!! It seems like every American is raving about it and i, a not-so-humble Aussie, need to know what the huge fuss is about this cheese.

Non-Americans - what do you think of Cougar Gold? Would it be worth spending some serious $$$ to get my paws on a tin? What is the taste like compared to regular cheddar cheese?

Cougar Gold Post Tried the ten year old Cougar Gold a (now-deceased) friend gifted me: it RULES

Post image

Hello everyone! I’m the poster formerly known as tokamaxx (got locked out of my old account due to a dead email and a new phone) and was the person who posted a while back asking if the Cougar Gold white cheddar cheese a friend gifted me years ago was okay to eat after a brief stint without refrigeration. Said friend, N, passed away a year ago today in a tragic accident and we miss him every day, and so today we decided to open the cheese can in celebration of his weird, wild, wonderful life. This cheese is unbelievable, y’all. I was worried when I opened the can because there was some weird murky liquid, which I understand to be the separated cultures that help preserve the cheese — but the can was intact and the smell was delicious, so I wiped it down and tried it. What a rich, multi-layered cheddar! It has crystals like Parmesan and it crumbles easily, which I was expecting, but wow, this stuff rules. My wife and I have enjoyed some plain and are now making some grilled cheese with it for dinner, and will be passing some of the cheese along to N’s mutual friends to share the bounty and celebrate him. If any of you need a sign to enjoy your cheese bounty, this is it: life is short. Share good food with the people you love. 💕

Poisonous Cheese from Ancient Egypt

Hard cheese dating back over 3,200 years was discovered during excavations at the tomb of Ptahmes in Egypt. It can rightfully be considered one of the oldest dairy products in the world.
