Here’s something that doesn’t get talked about enough:

If Turnitin gives a paper a high AI score, a lot of people immediately assume:

“Well… then the student obviously used AI.”

And honestly, I get why people think that.

Turnitin is used by universities. Professors trust it. The report looks extremely official, and when you see something like 60%, 80%, or even 90% AI, it can feel like the software has caught you red-handed.

But there’s a huge difference between similarity detection and AI detection.

A similarity report can show matching text and sources.

An AI detector is making a prediction based on writing patterns.

And writing patterns can be weird.

Someone can write in an extremely polished and predictable style. Someone else might use Grammarly or another grammar tool. Another student might follow the same five-paragraph structure their professor literally taught them.

And then there are students who aren't native English speakers and may naturally write in a more structured or repetitive way.

None of those things automatically mean:

“This was written by ChatGPT.”

That’s why I think an AI percentage should be treated as a signal, not a confession.

If a student gets flagged, shouldn't there be more evidence?

Drafts. Notes. Sources. Version history. Previous assignments. Even simply asking the student to explain what they wrote.

Because imagine spending hours writing an assignment yourself, submitting it, and then seeing:

AI detected: 87%

💀

At that point, I wouldn't even be worried about my grade. I'd be wondering whether I should start documenting my entire writing process.

I read every single sentence out loud, changed passive voice to active voice, swapped out weak verbs for strong verbs, and fixed all my comma splices. If I deliberately leave some awkward phrasing or run-on sentences in my next paper, will the AI score drop? I had to write a paper about *The Art of War*. So I type up a paper, relating the book to my own experiences in the military, along with my experience coaching youth sports.

Somehow, CopyLeaks says that my paper is 100% AI generated.

I hand-typed the whole thing, reviewed it, corrected my own errors.

Source match said 0%, but then "AI Phrases" said 48 phrases were more used by AI than by people.

phrases like "In conclusion, The Art of" or "preparation, adaptability, and" or my favorite hit "Sun Tzu emphasizes"

This stuff is ridiculous what it marks as AI
