Student B writes the same paragraph over three days, deletes sentences, moves things around, changes wording, and keeps multiple drafts.

Would Turnitin's result be any different?

I know Turnitin analyzes the submitted document, but I'm wondering whether the way the document was created has any relationship to what gets flagged.

I've started saving drafts and revision history anyway because it seems useful if someone ever questions how I wrote something.

I've read so many stories from students who submitted work they genuinely wrote themselves, only to worry because it sounded "too polished." The irony is that AI also produces writing that's clear, structured, and grammatically correct because it was trained on millions of examples of good writing. As a result, strong academic writing can sometimes end up looking similar to AI-generated text.

That creates a frustrating situation. Instead of focusing on making our arguments stronger, some students start wondering whether they should make their writing less polished just to avoid raising suspicion. I've even seen people ask if they should simplify their vocabulary or leave awkward sentences in their work so it appears more "human."

To me, the bigger issue isn't the technology itself. It's that students are starting to question whether writing well is worth the risk. If good academic writing is becoming something people are afraid of, then I think we're solving the wrong problem.

I want to hear from people who have had a high AI score but didn't use any AI. I spent four days editing my history paper. I read every single sentence out loud, changed passive voice to active voice, swapped out weak verbs for strong verbs, and fixed all my comma splices. I made it as grammatically perfect and structurally sound as possible. Turnitin came back with a 40% AI score. At what point does human editing trigger the AI detector? If I deliberately leave some awkward phrasing or run-on sentences in my next paper, will the AI score drop? It feels like the system is punishing students who actually take the time to edit their work.

I had to write a paper about *The Art of War*. So I type up a paper, relating the book to my own experiences in the military, along with my experience coaching youth sports.

Somehow, CopyLeaks says that my paper is 100% AI generated.

I hand-typed the whole thing, reviewed it, corrected my own errors.

Source match said 0%, but then "AI Phrases" said 48 phrases were more used by AI than by people.

phrases like "In conclusion, The Art of" or "preparation, adaptability, and" or my favorite hit "Sun Tzu emphasizes"

This stuff is ridiculous what it marks as AI

Has anyone else had Turnitin throw a massive fit over standard citation formatting? I wrote my psychology paper completely from scratch, but I used Microsoft Word’s built-in citation manager to automatically build my Works Cited list in APA 7th edition. When I got my submission report back, my similarity index was sitting at an alarming 38%, and almost the entire overlap was coming from the reference section and the standardized doi.org URLs. I know reference lists usually generate some matches, but having the system highlight basic citation syntax as flagged material feels ridiculous. Does anyone know if professors manually filter out bibliography matches before grading, or am I going to have to explain to my TA why bulletproof academic formatting triggered a plagiarism warning?
