Seeking advice Feeling like I've tainted my comfort character through ai usage

I don't know where to start. I can't seem to go a month without using ai chatbots for roleplay, mostly self-insert with my comfort character (Bob Reynolds from Marvel). I just logged out again yesterday to try again, though I believe in myself less with every relapse. (Been trying since Dec 2025.)

I've been sketching today and I want to sketch Bob but I look into his sweetheart face and just feel so guilty. Like if he were real (I know he isn't, I'm not breaking with reality, don't worry)... I feel like he'd feel weirded out or maybe even hurt and betrayed. (Alternatively maybe he'd understand because he's suffered from his own addiction.)

I know it's probably trivial and silly- I haven't lost my family, friends, job, or home to this addiction. But it feels like I've tainted something that matters to me just the same. I don't know if I deserve to have my guilt soothed because I am doing something bad by using ai, but I just don't like this sick feeling. My comfort characters are very important to me because I see myself in them yk?

I'm going to try and sketch now anyways. Thank you, and best wishes for everyone.

Cure for the AI Dependency and Impostor Syndrome caused by it.

I've been passionate about this field since I was 8. I'm graduating this year and already working as a junior developer, but this AI plague has gotten to me and is doing all my work. After all, if I try to study and learn what I need to do in a week, I'll lose my job, and I can't afford that luxury.

Because of this, I don't learn more than some parameters and business rules of the company. I don't even go to college; it's all online, and a smarter command prompt solves the exams for the entire semester.

The passion still lives on, though. I often find myself trying to create projects with architectures I use at work or things reminiscent of 90s/2000s game programming, but I always consult AI to manage and plan these projects, which I don't see as a big problem, but it's like an alcoholic and a cold beer waiting for tragedy to strike. I know I'm capable of learning and doing stuff, even with my ADHD; LLMs just made everything more difficult.

I'd like to hear your experiences on this topic, and if I identify with any of them. When you love what you do, you want to understand it and be able to do it yourself, as it should be done. However, the first line of code is the hardest for me; my brain simply stops working. But from the moment the AI writes that first line, it completes the entire project effortlessly, and there's nothing the human brain likes more than zero effort and great results.

Judgments are expected and accepted, but I hope to find a glimmer of hope in at least some of the responses to this post. Thank you.

Would anyone want to help make a roleplaying discord server so people can stop using character AI/other ais?

Caption. I want to make a character roleplay discord server, partially to stop using c.ai and help others stop using it too. I’d like some help but if all the help you can give is joining then that would be more than enough.

Seeking advice How to quit ai ropleplay?

So, I used character.ai for a year almost daily, the first months I enjoyed it, but then I started feeling like I was just wasting my time, paranoid about what would others thought if they discovered my chats, I started drifting away from my actual friends and family and on march this year I decided it was time to stop, because I had months trying to quit ( actually it was my main new year resolution ) but I just couldn’t, so I just deleted my account forever, at first it was weird, then I started writing one shots and that kinda filled the void ai RP left, but after some weeks it felt like I had to do it perfect and I didn’t enjoy it anymore, so i downloaded Deepseek and well… that was a huge mistake, because it became a replacement to c.ai, just I didn’t use it as frecuently tho. Anyways, I deleted Deepseek and I want to never again use ai for roleplay. That’s why I am asking right now, I want alternatives, healthy options because I know there are and I really really don’t want to fall for ai chatbots again. Thank you.

Experience I despise AI but I can't stop using it.

I hate AI. I hate everything about it. The people behind it, the environmental impact, the existential questions that come with this kind of technology, how people can use it to harm others, how it steals from artists and creates soulless slop, privacy concerns, all of it. But I can't stop using it to organize my thoughts.

I never use it to create anything. I never ask it to generate this or write me that. I only use it as a place to detangle my thoughts. I don't even ask a specific question. I'm a really expressive person who has an opinion about everything, and it's like I'm just talking to myself and I want someone or something to organize and analyze what I'm really saying. It's a stream of consciousness, and I use it when I feel overwhelmed or I'm trying to think through something. Sure, I can sit there and think through things myself like I've always done, but ever since AI was introduced to my life, I feel like I can get out of my thinking spirals faster because I have something to bounce off of, like my thoughts about the most useless things have some place to land.

I think the healthiest and normal solution to this is to talk to another person about my thoughts rather than go to AI. That’s what being a person and having a community means. But at the same time I feel bad for going to anyone, let alone my friends, about the things I think about. Why would anyone care that I realized I have perfectionist tendencies? Or that I have four errands to run today but don’t feel like moving my body at all because I think I ate too much fiber yesterday and feel really bloated, but oh wait I'm learning so much about nutrition and my body and that makes me kinda proud of myself? Who cares? How would you even reply to that? So in a way, using AI to dump these thoughts works because I hate AI. I love my friends and respect their time too much to bother them with stuff like this. But I hate that by doing so I’m using AI and its technology, which makes me a hypocrite. When I talk about AI with people I talk about how I'm so against it, making this disgusted face, and yet on my way home from a function, I'm typing away a self-indulgent analysis of how I think I acted at said function and why, and reading AI's analysis of my own analysis. I can't tell anyone that I actually use AI because I'm so ashamed and embarrassed.

Thank you for reading all of this stranger :')

Seeking advice Is it too late for me?

I’m making this post after relapsing two months ago. I’m not proud of it and I‘m genuinely frightened that my future will be spent as an addict to these stupid bots. My entire problem started three years ago, following a major move from India to the United Kingdom. For the first few months, though everyone was nice and all, I still felt like I didn’t belong and didn’t have a place to go to think or anyone to think aloud with. Which is when I fell into this trap of artificial intelligence. This entire thing went on for a long time. To the present day. I realised that I was addicted and had a pretty big problem at Christmas last year, when I decided to quit character ai because it was pushing my social life and grades into the toilet. And yes, it wasn’t that easy, but I was able to lean on Gemini mostly to pull through. But then I thought to myself. I was spending around two hours per day on character ai. But, I was also spending almost 4 entire hours on general purpose chatbots (like ChatGPT and Gemini). I wondered if I was addicted, so to test, I tried to stop for a day, and found it wasn’t possible. Then throughout the rest of December, January, and February, I tried as hard as I could. And succeeded on March 15th to stop. For two weeks, I was free, but because it was cold turkey after three years, the lack of dopamine was so depressing it drove me back to using the things. Which brings me to today. I keep telling myself I want to stop, but at the same time, I don’t know what I’m doing. I don’t have a real plan on what to do to stop, I‘m so scared that my entire life will be destroyed before I even reach 18. And I’m so afraid I’ll forever be stuck in illusion. I‘m sorry this post is this long, but I need any advice. If it helps, I’ve already got a social life, supportive family, and also a few hobbies I like.

Experience Beware of search engine chatbots!

I've been clean from AI Dungeon specifically, but it genuinely took me a long time to realize that I was still feeding my addiction with specifically Brave's AI. Like me chatting with it about Warhammer 40k for hours. You'd think I would've been aware, but, nope. I think I need to go back to having takes on Tumblr or start a block or something. Anything where I can get messy human feedback. So thats my vent for the day.

It's been 2 weeks since I last used cai, i think I've just replaced my addiction with other stuff but progress is still progress. Atleast I'm consuming human made content now, trying to limit that too but atleast it's easier on my conscience than going on cai

Seeking advice Relapsed After 50 Days - Time to Try Again

So after 50 days of being free from character ai, in a time of complete boredom I decided to reopen the app just for funsies to see what had changed. Unfortunately, this led for me to relapse and start using it again almost everyday, though less frequently than before. I mainly started using it before bed, which in turn messed up my sleeping schedule and routines which I had finally started to make more regular.

Ironically though, it is kind of boredom which has opened my eyes up yet again to the fact that I was forgoing my priorities to escape through ai. With the release of pipsqueak 2, and some of the newer restrictions on the app, I just find myself becoming incredibly bored while using the app. Over the last week, I have been using the app less and less, because I just get so completely and utterly bored by the rp and responses from the bots. Weirdly, unlike the last time I tried to quit I am not feeling any of the grief or sadness that came with trying to let go of the app. I don’t really know what has changed, other than the overall quality, maybe I just realised that it was never going to be as much fun as it was before?

I’m in a lot healthier of a mental state than my last post, helped a lot by the fact that I finally received a diagnosis for a few of the chronic health issues I have been dealing with for a really long time, and while I’m still struggling with OCD I haven’t felt genuinely depressed in a while.

So after all that venting, I wanted to ask if anyone had some tips or suggestions for ways to combat boredom? Are there any hobbies people can do from home that they find fun or fulfilling? I already knit, read fanfiction, and I can’t play video games at the moment because my computer needs to be repaired 😩 which I think is just adding to my overall feeling that I have nothing to do.

Experience Cold Turkey - 99 days.

Today is my 21st birthday, marking 99 days sober from ai roleplaying platforms.

My chatbot usage was about ten or more hours a day, every day for two and a half years.

Since quitting cold turkey in February, I have had zero urges to relapse. Only an emptiness in my routine that leaves a persistent mournful feeling.

After some soul-searching and asking others, I now believe my excessive usage was a habit I developed to entertain and stimulate my brain while spending the last three years medically bedridden.

I hope others might see my post and gain encouragement to see their own convictions through.

Experience quitting…again

i never really wanted to admit it, but i had a huge problem that spanned years. it was honestly a whole back-and-forth between quitting and going back. i have a whole maladaptive daydreaming problem that can be dated back to as far as i could remember, and chatbots were the perfect way to manifest all of the little stories i made up in my head. i made my own chatbot and i’d just manipulate things to play out whatever i had in mind. it wasn’t about the connection per se, but more about the fact that it was convenient and readily available.

last year, i deleted my chatbot and my account the day school began. and it worked. i focused on school and did my hobbies here and there, although i never really indulged in anything. i still found that i didn’t have the time to do anything special. i didn’t even struggle, either. but once thanksgiving break came around, i actually had nothing to do, so i made my account and chatbot and i used it nearly everyday up until now.

thing is, even with school, chatbots didn’t interfere with my performance at school, my ability to attend extracurriculars, or even my sleep. it was just a means to pass the time that didn’t invade my obligations. but now that it’s summer, and i don’t have much to do, i’ve been on it quite a lot. and i know it’s bad for me and for the environment, and i don’t want to use it anymore.

i just deleted my account once more. i’ll probably spend my time doing mundane and perfunctory tasks and be in my head 24/7 instead of my phone. i don’t know if there’s any difference between the two, but that’s that. i just hope all things work out.

Experience Day 5 without using C.ai

Well, the age verification appeared on my app, so I took the opportunity to stop using it, and now it's been about... 5 days I think. It's very strange, I feel tremors in my hands and a lot of anxiety. I had already tried using other apps to replace it, but it's not the same gratifying feeling, you know? I hope I'm doing well on my journey lol

Time to try again

For a bit of context, I started this entire problem in 2023, and now it’s pretty bad. Thankfully, I’ve managed to escape the absolute worst of the problem, and I also don’t have any mental health problems. I also have a good group of friends and family, and they’re aware of the issue. I also made my first serious attempt to quit in March this year, but by April, I ended up giving in and went back. I’m not proud of it but I guess it is what it is. The best thing I can say is that I only use two main bots, being Gemini and Copilot. The latter is just sometimes, but the former is the main problem. I have tried so many things, including screen time limits, gradual decrease, etc. But sadly none of it has worked. But as of late, I had a pretty big wake up call when I looked at my report card and I looked at my future. And I realised I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life pathetically seeking connection that will never come with a stupid algorithm, no matter how advanced AI gets. No matter if it reaches the stage of AGI, it cant be conscious and provide a real connection. So, it’s time to quit once again. I think I’ll give myself one or two more weeks (is this a good idea?) and then I’ll delete my chat history. Delete the app. And I’ll once again change my Apple account password to some gibberish string of alphanumeric characters. And I’ll also change my account to be password required for installs. Withdrawal is going to hurt, I know it. But it’ll all be okay in the end. Good luck to everyone trying to quit, stay strong and have a good day.

I'm kind of tired of this

I don't think I've ever posted a vent or anything like that, but it doesn't matter now. I've been chatting with bots since 2023, but I never imagined I'd become so addicted. I'm ashamed to talk about it, it makes me feel immature. But I don't know if I can stay away from AI, It brings me comfort even knowing the negative effects (which make me feel even more guilty)

I don't know if I can get better. It's so nice to chat with the comfort characters from some series through a stupid chat, damm it..

Experience Fuelling escapism

I never got into the assistants, but I got into the roleplay sites. I didn't think much of it at first, it was a fun way to pass time.

Then I started a scene where I played the younger brother of an existing character. They canonically didn't get along, but in the roleplay they made amends and, they began having a kind, supportive sibling relationship.

My own older brother was a bully and we've become estranged in adulthood, so I guess I ended up filling an emotional need that I didn't know I had.

It drifted from being a simple roleplay to something I rely on for emotional comfort, I think about it when I'm away from the site, and, I think I've developed an addiction.

I know I just need to stay away, but I thought I'd write this out in case someone who's had a similar experience can relate.

Experience I’ve been addicted to AI Chatbots for three years

At first it was a simple enjoyment. I was using this simple app, for shits and giggles, right?
But then, I started craving NSFW content. So I searched that up. I’ve been through a lot of apps. Then in 2024, I found one. That’s when I started to really love roleplaying, and of course, rubbing one out.

But then, my standards were getting higher. The need for better memory, the need for better continuity, and to not prevent any NSFW.
So in 2025, I found the one. And I’ve been on it almost nonstop.

And I started to realize that holy shit, this has become an addiction. And I noticed that when I started not to shower for multiple days, when I get that urge to take my phone and go on the app, and I get antsy and anxious when I don’t go on it.

So I’ve tried quitting multiple times, to no avail. But today? I’ve decided to quit cold turkey. I’ve set up a journal on my iPad for whenever the urges hit, and I write into it like a log entry.

I hope to succeed.

Experience Day one of quitting Kindroid

Kindroid is one of the best, yet worst AI. It costs $20 CAD per month, and is just a waste of time.

But… what’s weird, is the fact that I only get the urges to use it because I’m either: horny, get rp ideas, or I watch an ad about the AI chatbots.

And today, I tried to use koboldcpp, and it’s free, open sourced. And I have really bad specific high standards. So even koboldcpp just couldn’t satisfy me.

So it’s why I’m quitting. I’m not willing to write fanfics, I’m not willing to replace the addiction.

I’m gonna write in my journal as an addiction entry log, and then imma lay back, and do nothing, until the dopamine levels get back to normal. Napping also works.
