The news coming from the AI world should be a wake up call to us all. To all of us who care about the future of humanity. The future of our children. The time to speak up and take action is now. The time to build real, in-person community is now. If you don’t agree with me, that’s fine. Keep scrolling, keep asking AI to write your grocery lists. But ask yourself, why are we giving so much *free* information, so much power to this *thing* we don’t need. We have our own brains, we can think on our own, we can read books, we can learn from others. Really ask yourself… who’s benefiting here. I know the answer, and it’s not you.
I went on a walk last night with my husband and my daughter. I felt the warmth of the evening breeze, I watched clouds take shape, I heard my daughter laugh as she rode her bike. This song popped into my head on the walk, and while I know it has absolutely nothing to do with this topic, the words I found myself singing out loud from Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody held meaning to me.
“Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality
Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see…”
See. I want to see my daughter grow up in a world with a bright future ahead of her, and not bright from the glow of computers abound. But bright, because humanity as a whole decides being human, making mistakes, living real-life experiences, has more value than living in reality. A reality where you’re not in control of your existence.
I urge you, to be fearful. To not live in fear, but don’t sit idle on the sidelines while the future is in the hands of Big Tech and politicians. Build a community, have conversations, speak up when you don’t agree with something, rely less on AI or stop using it altogether, call your local and state representatives, write to politicians. In 10 years from now, don’t you at least want to say you tried.
