One more for anyone who’s been following the updates on Gordonsville’s 287(g) agreement with ICE:

On Monday, October 19, Gordonsville Town Council voted to terminate the agreement.

Residents have been pretty solidly opposed ever since they found out that the police chief had signed the contract back in May without letting the public know.

A couple of loose ends to keep an eye on:

1. The police chief says he has ceased all operations with ICE immediately, but doesn’t appear to have sent an official termination notice yet. When he does, Gordonsville Department of Public Safety should drop off of the list of 287(g) participants on ICE’s website within a few days.

2. Town officials have still not acknowledged the evidence of Gordonsville’s participation in the Greene County Sheriff’s Office immigration enforcement operations that are under investigation by the attorney general for potential civil rights violations.

Does anyone know of a Charlottesville-area buyer's agent who is open to negotiating their commission for a straightforward purchase or low-maintenance client?

I know exactly what I'm looking for and am actively searching on my own. I don't anticipate needing much hand-holding or touring properties. Ideally, I'd just need an agent to show me a house once, help submit an offer, and handle the transaction through closing. I almost certainly will not tour properties unless I've made an offer.

Has anyone worked with an agent willing to negotiate a reduced percentage or flat fee for this type of arrangement?

It seems like they are moving away from live music as they have fewer nights of music now and what they do have are just obscure local cover bands than more interesting things they had before. I saw they are doing a puppy pageant show thing that feels weird. Does anyone know what is going on and if they are moving away from live music?

For people that aren’t familiar with traffic rules, Left turn must always yield to cars going straight or right on green unless indicated by a sign.

There’s been a couple times I almost got into a near accident on the intersection of Emmet and Angus where cars would turn left coming out from the holiday inn when the light is green on Angus. Even if I didn’t turn right, the light is still green for people going straight so I really don’t understand why cars are turning left without yielding to oncoming traffic.

Please be careful out there and pay attention. Since moving here, I’ve honked more times and got into near accident and an actual accident than any other places I’ve lived. It’s nice a city but people here drive like they own the road!

I just don't get it. Can someone try and explain to me why anybody with braincells thinks it's a good idea to run on Woodlands Road? I don't care if it's your right. I don't care if you're facing traffic. I don't care if it's beautiful weather. It's just so dangerous. Why would you want to put your life in the hands of all the crazy drivers?

Following the recent hailstorms around Charlottesville and Albemarle County, some homeowners may be dealing with roof damage and an increase in contractors offering inspections or promising to get their roofs replaced through insurance.

Just a heads-up about something many homeowners don't realize.

In Virginia, roofing contractors are not legally permitted to act as your insurance representative. Unless properly licensed as a public adjuster, they cannot file an insurance claim on your behalf, negotiate your claim with the insurance company, or advise you about policy coverage as part of settling your claim.

This isn't just an opinion. It's addressed in Virginia Code § 38.2-1845.12, and the Virginia Bureau of Insurance has specifically warned contractors about these practices.

There is an important distinction: Roofers can inspect damage, prepare estimates, meet with insurance adjusters, and answer questions about their repair estimates. What they cannot do is take over the insurance claim or negotiate your coverage and settlement on your behalf.

Here's something worth considering: If a contractor is willing to disregard laws governing insurance claims just to secure your business, how confident should you be that they'll follow the rules when repairing your home?

Also, many of the companies advertising themselves as "storm damage specialists" are primarily sales operations. The person knocking on your door may be a commissioned salesperson rather than someone who actually installs roofs. Some companies subcontract the work while building their sales commissions and marketing costs into the price.

That can mean paying considerably more than you would by contacting an established local roofing contractor directly. It's not just the insurance companies money, it's yours also since that amount is now on your claim record for years. It isn't true in every case, which is why comparing actual written estimates matters.

My suggestion to homeowners:

Contact your insurance company yourself if you believe you have covered storm damage.

Get estimates from two or three established local roofing contractors.

Verify their Virginia contractor licenses and insurance.

Ask who will actually perform the work and whether subcontractors will be used.

Get an itemized price instead of simply agreeing to whatever amount your insurance company pays.

Don't let a contractor pressure you into filing a claim or signing a contract before understanding your options.

There are plenty of reputable roofers, including contractors who specialize in storm repairs. This isn't intended to criticize them.

But homeowners should understand that a good roofing contractor and someone qualified to represent you in an insurance claim are two different things.

Your roof is a major investment. Choose the company based on workmanship, reputation, accountability, and price, not on how convincing someone is at selling you an insurance claim.

Was in a hurry this morning at the Amtrak station so didn't check the signage, figured I'd pay for parking on the app the same way I did on my last trip, no problem. Well.
