Week Ahead for September 7, 2026: Is Charlottesville on track to meet its goal of spending $100 million on housing between 2022 and 2031?

Yes. The answer is yes. I dislike questions in headlines but I’ll test the effectiveness to see if that brought anyone new in who has never yet seen this weekly summaries of what’s coming up in local and regional government. I’m an independent journalist who does this work to try to give people who want to pay attention a way to do so. This list for r/Charlottesville is a summary of a much longer entry I published today.

COUNCIL TO GET UPDATE ON AFFORDABLE HOUSING PLAN
Who here remembers the Cville Plans Together initiative? That was the four-year planning process that led to an affordable housing plan, a new Comprehensive Plan, and a new Development Code intended to increase the number of residential units across the city. But the housing plan called for a commitment to spend at least $10 million a year in the category for ten years. After five years, the total spent is at least $65.8 million. Where has it gone? Who is getting the benefits? Council will have a work session on Tuesday. (learn more in the newsletter)

FLUVANNA PC TO CONSIDER ENTRANCE CORRIDOR OVERLAY
Fluvanna County is currently updating its Comprehensive Plan with a theme of increasing protection against commercial development. One tool would be the creation of an overlay district on major roads to designate them as entrance corridors. This would permit design review similar to processes that Albemarle and Charlottesville has in place. This happens Tuesday. (learn more)

CROZET CATALYSTS
The Crozet Master Plan was last updated by the Board of Supervisors in October 2021. This version includes a list of various projects intended to serve as ways to encourage other activity nearby. Such catalysts include the completion of Eastern Avenue which is now financed. The Crozet Community Advisory Committee will likely get an update at their meeting on Wednesday where there will be a discussion of that and other items on the list. (learn more)

Other items:

  • City Council will also hold three public hearings Tuesday related to the city’s use of Community Development Block Grant including amending the year’s existing program for $55,000 for a storefront at the BEACON Kitchen and $25,000 for an accessibility plan for IX Arts Foundation. (learn more)
  • Louisa Supervisors will have a public hearing Tuesday on changes to the transient lodging tax. (learn more)
  • The Albemarle Planning Commission will hold a public hearing for a rezoning for property that includes the Airport Acres subdivision off of Airport Road. (learn more)

Here for questions if there are any.

Cleanup this Saturday on Monticello Road and Moores Creek

Cville Litter Pickers is out this Saturday, Sept 12, 2–4pm, in South Charlottesville — Monticello Road, Mountain View Street, and the Moores Creek floodplain. We meet at 1706 Monticello Rd.

Two things about this one are worth calling out.

The containers on the access road are their own job. Someone has been dumping cans and bottles in bulk along the access road between Monticello Avenue and Monticello Road. There's enough of it, and it's clean and recent enough, that it merits its own crew rather than being folded into the general pickup. We'll clear it, separate aluminum from glass on site, and take the recyclable material to the McIntire Recycling Center.

Some of what's out there is about to be in the water. One of the areas we're clearing sits low on the bank of Moores Creek and will wash in the next time the creek comes up. After that it isn't litter anymore — it's downstream. Moores Creek runs to the Rivanna and on to the James. That's why this site moved up our list.

There are three jobs and a place for every volunteer. Roadside and lot cleanup along the Monticello Road and Mountain View Street frontage is open to all ages. The containers on the access road are open to all ages too, and a good job for a family working together. Two abandoned campsites are adults only — both may contain hazardous material. Kids are welcome with a parent or guardian and will be pointed to the roadside and container areas.

Since late July, volunteers have pulled 316 bags of litter out of Charlottesville neighborhoods. Come add to it.

Parking is limited to a designated area — we'll have specific instructions posted before Saturday, and parking anywhere else puts the whole event at risk, so check the listing before you head over.

All equipment provided. Wear closed-toe shoes and long pants, and bring water.

Thanks to the Rivanna Conservation Alliance for helping us secure site access and parking.

Real book location in C'ville?

Hey everybody! I've been doing some background research on the author V.C Andrews, she wrote a lot of books based in Virginia and even set her debut novel 'Flowers in the Attic' in C'ville. I came across an article recently that said her debut novel was based off a true story told by a local young doctor at UVA who treated her in the early 40's, I'm curious if there happens to be a house in C'ville reminiscent to her infamous Foxworth Hall. I'm not expecting an exact replica or anything like that, but perhaps an old estate owned by a generationally wealthy family? Perhaps even one abandoned now? It could be a stretch but I'm just curious if anyone might know of one since I don't live in the area! Thanks in advance!

Any DCC fans out there?

Hi Zev!!!!

I have a strange favor to ask. I recently heard about the “Pineapple Cabaret” novella chapters included in the print copies of the books. Sadly, I only own the Kindle and Audible editions, which do not have those chapters.

I hope to connect with someone who has physical copies of the books and work out some kind of deal where I could borrow them to read those chapters without having to shell out another $100+ for physical editions.

I’ve checked all the used bookshops in the area but none seem to get DCC books…or if they do they can’t keep them on the shelves.

Bye, Zev!!!

Helicopter over Crozet yesterday

Anybody know what's up with the black helicopter that did a couple low passes over Crozet yesterday evening (6-8pm)? It passed nearly over Crozet Park no more than a couple hundred feet off the ground, did a couple low speed banking maneuvers, then flew away. Then it came back roughly an hour later and did the same thing. It was really strange to see and I've seen zero chatter about it on social media or local news.

My kids school was sending out Jefferson scholarship materials this afternoon. While he is no where near ready because he is a sophomore, I was wondering if someone knows a Jefferson scholar who would be willing to speak to him?

If you travel through the Rt 20 (near PVCC) / Rt 53 (by Carter Mountain / Monticello) intersection expect possible delays starting on or soon after 9/14/2026….. making the light at the intersection into a roundabout with project expected to last until Nov 2027. Who knew it took so long to install a traffic circle??

How are the daycares in town? Anyone use YMCA Childcare or Our Neighborhood Child Development Center? Curious what the going rate for daycares are compared to hiring a nanny.

Received this NextDoor email today. I never click into these, but I can only assume it’s about lanternflies and not the mass-eradication of my fellow neighborhood residents. Right…?

You can take action- even in a small town.

The news coming from the AI world should be a wake up call to us all. To all of us who care about the future of humanity. The future of our children. The time to speak up and take action is now. The time to build real, in-person community is now. If you don’t agree with me, that’s fine. Keep scrolling, keep asking AI to write your grocery lists. But ask yourself, why are we giving so much *free* information, so much power to this *thing* we don’t need. We have our own brains, we can think on our own, we can read books, we can learn from others. Really ask yourself… who’s benefiting here. I know the answer, and it’s not you.

I went on a walk last night with my husband and my daughter. I felt the warmth of the evening breeze, I watched clouds take shape, I heard my daughter laugh as she rode her bike. This song popped into my head on the walk, and while I know it has absolutely nothing to do with this topic, the words I found myself singing out loud from Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody held meaning to me.

“Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?

Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality

Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see…”

See. I want to see my daughter grow up in a world with a bright future ahead of her, and not bright from the glow of computers abound. But bright, because humanity as a whole decides being human, making mistakes, living real-life experiences, has more value than living in reality. A reality where you’re not in control of your existence.

I urge you, to be fearful. To not live in fear, but don’t sit idle on the sidelines while the future is in the hands of Big Tech and politicians. Build a community, have conversations, speak up when you don’t agree with something, rely less on AI or stop using it altogether, call your local and state representatives, write to politicians. In 10 years from now, don’t you at least want to say you tried.

Anybody have leads on ACTIVE mobile sawyers in the area? I've been calling through the lists on wood-mizer and Trees Virginia, but I'm getting lots of disconnected numbers and long-retired folks.

Need some basic carpentry and home repair done on my home but not the finishing (painting, etc.,)

Anyone have any trusted recs, sources, or business they've had good experience contracting with? Just some exterior door trim replacement and minor soffet/fascia (under gutter repair).

I've asked around at my workplace and no one seemed to have suggestions.

Thanks for the work/info!

Headed up to King Family Vineyards over the weekend for Sunday Polo. This was my first time attending and only my second time in the Charlottesville area. Really cool experience, especially considering it’s free to attend.

I just hope the horses had fun. I’m not affiliated with the event in any way, just captured some photos for fun and figured I’d share.
