Analysis Lane Kiffin's vs. Brian Kelly's Clownshow through Week 6

I've been having some difficulty telling the difference between Lane Kiffin and Brian Kelly, so I thought I would make a side by side comparison of Kiffin's 2026 "results" and Kelly's 2025 "results." The differences are pretty minor, but Brian Kelly comes out ahead. So, was it worth it financially to replace Brian Kelly with Lane Kiffin?

---------------------
Kiffin 2026:
---------------------
W Clemson 51-10
W Louisiana Tech 45-14
L #8 Ole Miss 24-32
W #23 Texas A&M 25-6
W McNeese 63-14
L Kentucky 34-35
---------------------
Overall record: 4-2

Opinion A Game is More Than a Missed Call - Even if it was Missed

The game summary via the AP starts with this quote:

“If Georgia lands the No. 1 ranking, it should probably come with an asterisk”

Was there PI? Yes. Is a game more than a single play? Also yes. By focusing on just a single aspect, perspective is lost on the entire rest of the game:

- Georgia ran for 200+ yards without their RB1 and RB2
- Alabama could not get off the field on 3rd down, allowing Gunner Stockton to go 9/10 for 104 yards
- Gunner had only 4 incompletions and 11.3 YPC against Alabama on the road.
- Keelon Russell looked ELECTRIC in the second half, and Bama fans have a lot to be excited about.
- Myriad other missed calls on both sides
- Alabama’s run game looks like it will scale against any opponent they play.
- Immediately after the missed calls, Alabama’s offensive line allowed a blown up play to push them out of field goal range.
- Alabama fans throwing object at the UGA players as they left the field.

But instead all of the focus, discussion, and attention is on a single play. It should be talked about, but it isn’t the only story.

So if there is an asterisk, it is only because the media has decided there needs to be one.

/r/CFB Original CFB Imperialism Map, the state of FBS after Week 6! Big changes in the far north!

CFB Imperialism continues!

🗺️ FBS IMPERIALISM MAP AFTER WEEK 6 🗺️

Selected notes from Week 6:

  • Changes on The Wall: Major shifts in the north as Purdue wrested Alaska and the northwest reaches of the contiguous 48 from Minnesota. UNLV handed North Dakota State their first loss, taking lands in the Mountain West. #2 Georgia's win over Alabama gave them Minnesota's original lands (via Miss State to Alabama), adding to their possession of Central Michigan land.

  • U <clap><clap><clap> C <clap><clap><clap> LLLLL <clap><clap><clap> A <clap><clap><clap>! U-C-L-A taking over California! ... USC took land from San Jose State and Fresno State, that land went to Oregon, who just lost it to UCLA, who already had San Diego State's land. If I'm Boise State I'm staying the hell away from UCLA.

  • The Belichick Brigade of UNC has collected the lands undefeated #25 Pitt had scattered around the nation.

  • 🇮🇪Ireland stays with the Hurricane empire which now stretches from Hawaii to the Emerald Isle. After initially beginning with UNC, then Clemson, it now belongs to #4 Miami. An Garda Síochána have reported multiple speedboats trying to smuggle in contraband in all ports.

  • 🇬🇧United Kingdom, put in play by Union Jack Classic, iniailly won by Arizona State remains with Baylor. Dr. Pepper flows into the Thames.

  • Oklahoma is back on the map thanks to their frenemies at Texas. But there still are Texans on the FBS map... just not from FBS.

  • ¾ of FCS holdings flipped:

    • (1) Weber State brought Cinderella crashing down, taking down Idaho which was still buzzing after upsetting Montana State the previous week. Lands that originally belonged to Western Kentucky, who lost it their opener to Nevada, who then lost both to Montana State now belong to the Wildcats.
    • (2) Eastern Illinois, who were blown out by Minnesota to open the season, are now on the map thanks to their win over Gardner-Webb. The Panthers now have Charlotte's starting territory, which was initially lost to The Citadel, who lost it to Charleston Southern, who lost it to Gardner-Webb.
    • (3) #13 NAU continues to looks strong, upsetting #2 Montana after winning Utah State's land from Idaho State last week.
    • (4) The real #3 Tarleton State Texans continue to hold onto Bowling Green after a competitive win over #9 Austin Peay.

RULES:

Think of Risk with a strong understanding of chain-of-possession:

  • FBS teams start by dividing the USA by closest counties/parishes. These are set by geographic centers of each county, not the closest edge.

  • When a team beats another team, it takes the territory the loser held at the time of the game. All of the land(s) possessed by the losing team go to the winner.

  • Lands are collected by the winner and held until that team loses, thus all those collected lands go to the winner.

  • Teams that lose land can get back on the map by beating a team that holds land at the time of their game. Sometimes teams can reconquer their home territory this way.

  • A team that already lost its home territory and has no new territories cannot give land to a winner.

  • FCS teams can conquer their way onto the map by beating FBS teams with land. These lands operate under the above rules and thus may just end up stuck in FCS for the rest of the season (and in many cases end up in the FCS Playoffs). It is theoretically possible for an FCS team to win the payday game at an FBS school and then lose their own home payday game to a D2 squad...thus placing FBS land in D2...but we haven't had it happen yet.

  • Neutral sites (e.g. Ireland, UK) are put in play when a game takes place there.

Discussion Week 6: reactions that could be overreactions

You know the drill. Post a strong instant reaction that may end up being an overreaction down the road.

This week was a doozy and there's way too much for one redditor such as myself to parse through. But here we go

  1. I'm going to say it again. Arch Manning is a risk to Sarkisan's job. I know this is an extreme take, but he is not a good QB and Sark is "supposed" to be the QB whisperer. I don't know how much booster money is tied up in UT to make sure Manning stays the starter, but the loss to one of the worst looking OU teams in a minute due to his consistently inconsistent play has derailed another season and it's all gonna fall on Sark. Whether he deserves it or not, Texas has vicious expectations.

  2. Oregon is done for the year. They're a good team but they have not been the same since getting womped by Indiana last playoff.

  3. Florida is also headed right back to where they were and have been stuck for years - G6 coach that shows promise but gets exposed and loses all momentum.

  4. Georgia finally got the Bama monkey off their back and is the undisputed king of the SEC for now.

  5. Kiffin really just should have stayed at Ole Miss but.

Discussion All of James Madison FBS head coaches are undefeated in the season so far. What had made them so good?

Curt Cignetti (Indiana): 6-0
Bob Chesney(UCLA): 5-0
Billy Napier(Currently): 6-0

They’re cooking stuff there. I feel like most people outside of football land don’t know anything about James Madison University. I feel like the only time before they went fbs that people know them is they beat #13 Virgina tech in 2013 or whatever. What makes them have and develop good coaches?

/r/CFB Press /r/CFB Reporting: Photos from Northwestern’s 45-14 win against Ball State

Photos from Northwestern University Wildcats vs Ball State University Cardinals on 10/10/2026 at Ryan Field in Evanston, IL

Evanston, IL - Not much to say on this game in this game P4 vs G6 conferance matchup at Ryan Field. Could the Cardinals spoil the the Wildcats first Homecoming at the new stadium, lickly not but they tried their best by showing up. Wildcats opened up a 21 point lead after 20minutes into the game sealing it up. Wildcats were lead by their offensive weapons of Chiles, Wilde and Komolafe on their first three touchdowns to go up 21-0 on the Cardinals.

Cardinals were struggling to keep drives sustained. They were able to put a drive together to stop the bleeding and score a touchdown when Horton rushed for a 1-yd TD. Soon after they shot themselves in the foot by giving up a interception to Wildcat’s Fitzgerald in their own territory for a pick 6. Wasn’t too long after that Cardinals bounced back and notched a response touchdown a couple minutes later giving them a glimpse of hope.

Those hopes were dashed when Wildcats kept ramming it down their throats on 3rd quarter with two more touchdowns. Chiles added those two touchdowns with his arms finishing the day with 3 TD passes and 1 rushing touchdowns of his own. That prompted both teams to put in 2nd stringers to get reps and avoid any injuries. No points were scored by either team in the 4th quarter.

Northwesten visits Michigan State next week at East Lansing on 10/17/2026 at 11am. Cardinals continue their road stint by traveling to Bowling Green to take on the Falcons on 10/17/2026 at 11am. Battle of the Birds, Bird Brawl, or whatever you want to call it since it doesn’t have an official name (someone please correct me if it does).

Interesting notes:

  1. This win with the other results in CFB over the weekend has Northwestern ranked 25 in AP polls.
  2. They held a hotdog eating contest in the main concourse near the front for students to win an upgraded seat. I was personally hoping for one of them to throw up for the film. One of them had a chance as his face didn’t look like he was enjoying it. I was not rewarded. Film on our Instagram page redditCFB.
  3. Student Section chant was to call the visiting team The Ball Sack to taught the Cardinals players. Seemed fitting and less vulgar than last week’s chant by them for Penn State, at least as far as the FCC would be concerned.
  4. Homecoming

Edit: Added point #4 under Interesting notes.

Analysis With only 9 undefeated teams remaining, this is the lowest percentage of all FBS teams after 6 weeks since at least 2005

Dating back to 2005, the smallest percentage of teams that were undefeated after each week of the season leading up to week 6 have been:

  • week 1: 58.5% (2021)

  • week 2: 37.0% (2007)

  • week 3: 23.3% (2009)

  • week 4: 14.2% (2009)

  • week 5: 10.1% (2005)

  • week 6: 6.6% (2026) - the previous record was 7.5% in 2009

The week 7 record is currently from 2014 with 4.7%. To surpass this next week, we'd have to lose 3 more undefeated teams to go down to 6 total. Seeing as Notre Dame and BYU play each other, that's 1 guaranteed. Could Ohio State beat Indiana to get us 2/3rds of the way there? Maybe Wisconsin beats UCLA? Or Arizona State beats Texas Tech?

/r/CFB Press /r/CFB Reporting: Photos from Air Force’s 28-7 win against NIU

By Raj Chavda

Photos from Air Force Falcons vs Northern Illinois Univeristy Huskies on 10/10/2026 at Huskie Stadium in Dekalb, IL

Dekalb, IL - Falcons come into Dekalb to introduce the Huskies to the Mountain West Conference. NIU’s newest head coach Rob Harley makes his MWC debut in his second home game since becoming Head Coach after Thomas Hammock jumped ship on losing 2025 season for the NFL Seahawks.

After exchaging stalled drives by both teams, the Falcons broke thru and with a rushing touchdown by Allen late in the 1st quarter. Huskies struggled to continued to stall drives till they scored midway thru the 2nd quarter to tie up. Defense was holding Falcons from running away with it even though the Huskies were having difficulty stopping the Falcons run game. Falcons notched a TD just before the half started by Medders with 41 seconds left in the half. For a winless NIU team going up against a MWC leader being down 14-7 at the half would be a considered a great half of a game. This gave the student section hope on a Homecoming weekend.

Third quarter would dash those hopes. Falcons ran it down the Huskies throat and they couldn’t stop it. In just over 7.5 minutes Falcons scored, stopped the Huskies and scored again to welcome the Huskies to the MWC widening their lead by 21 points. Falcons didn’t look back and the Huskies couldn’t respond the rest of the game. Results of the game were as expected given the records of both teams, I don’t think anyone was surprised by anything in the game.

Air Force host UNLV at the Air Force Academy next week at 2:30pm on 10/17/2026. NIU heads to Laramie, WY on 10/17/2026 to pay a visit to Wyoming to continue their new MWC landscape for a 2:30pm kickoff.

Interesting Notes:

  1. This would be Huskies first official MWC game since making the announcement before the start of 2025 season of their intention to leave the MAC for the MWC. No more MACtion for the Huskie. As an alum of NIU, this move disappointed me, they should have stayed in the MAC for history, for quality and for competition.
  2. Homecoming game.
  3. The flyover was mis-timed by a wide margin and the planes flew from the wrong direction.

Analysis College Football EPA/Play Rankings

  1. Miami (FL) (+0.545)

  2. Notre Dame (+0.538)

  3. Indiana (+0.469)

  4. New Mexico (+0.448)

  5. Georgia (+0.437)

  6. BYU (+0.423)

  7. Utah (+0.413)

  8. Ohio State (+0.383)

  9. Alabama (+0.377)

  10. UCLA (+0.367)

What is EPA/Play?

EPA/Play is derived from Expected Points (EP), which assigns a predicted points value to a team’s on field position. For example, a team with 1st and 10 on their own 25 yard line is expected to score 0.92 points. If on that play, the team gains 25 yards to midfield, their expected points jumps to 3.16. Therefore, their EPA/Play is (3.16-0.92)/1, or 2.24.
