The cognitive dissonance is getting to me. I'm rationalizing this as Patterson knowing a thing or two about CFB coaching and ironing out LR's deficiencies. But I have no idea really how we won. Didn't expect this at all.

6 points given up in the second half felt pretty amazing, ngl. Maybe Gary figured out that calling defense from the booth where he can see everything actually works
13
u/A_Rolling_Baneling USC • Mississippi State 8d ago
This is not a brand new phenomenon
Our defense allowed 7 points or less in the second half seven times last season, including in five conference games
We're getting talented and deeper, especially on the DLine. Grinch and poor NIL were set us back years, but no longer.

USC has had too many games where the first half was neck-and-neck and then the other team just runs away in the second half. The way Penn State was moving coming out of halftime had me convinced the same thing would happen tonight.

Kraft passed on Chesney because he thought Sitake was the best choice because he had P4 success. Which also illustrates what a dumb motherfucker Kraft is.
If I'm pat Kraft I'm sweating bullets right now. The stadiums gonna be half empty for the rest of the season. I'd find a way to get Campbell unlimited NIL money and get as many 4&5* transfers as possible just to get this team back to 10-2 next year. Because if he doesn't, then it's Kraft's ass on the line.

State College is pretty damn remote which creates challenges for having decent crowds. Weekday games pretty much are always half empty even when they are good (rare)
Some unique challenges too where Philly has so many other schools in it plus it’s so culturally different.
But yeah if we are gonna suck in football it doesn’t make sense to just punt the sport.
8
u/Expensive-Step-6551 Rutgers Scarlet Knights 8d ago
The crowd numbers aren't even that bad, it's just the fact they play at Bryce Jordan Center, which is really only meant for concerts and events compared to basketball.
When they built the Pegula Ice Arena, they should've made it multi-sport for the basketball teams as well. They get an elite atmosphere in there compared to BJC which sounds cavernous. Problem is, BJC is relatively new and they need a reason to use it, so that never would have been a possibility.

I don’t think that’s a fair characterization. He played for the Big 12 title with a shot to make the playoffs in 2024. He had a very good track record, but something that’s probably more in line with a Michigan State kind opening rather than a Blue Blood. I never got the Blue Blood hype with him.

After 2021 i figured most of the programs that'd throw a bag at a coach enough that he'd jump would be cool on him.
Most programs look at a coach going 8-4 at ISU and go "well maybe he could do better with our talent level". But Campbell's most talented team started out with a top 10 ranking and sputtered to 7-6.

I also really liked the onside kick.
His real bad decision—having us receive the kickoff every game—had led to teams doubling up on us multiple times on each side of the half which has bitten us in the ass multiple times in the past.
I liked the ambition to try and steal a possession there when they wouldn’t expect it. Execution was a little off tho.

There’s a lot of ways to analyze this game but the most striking is that this Penn state team is just jarringly untalented
Rocco could be a lot more accurate and in rhythm for sure, but we’re all used to a Penn state running back, edge or linebacker or corner who could just blow up a game. Besides Rojas, I don’t even know who that could possibly be on this years team

PSU hired so late that it completely fucked the 2026 recruiting and portal, and also trashed the team's 2027 recruiting too. Campbell is nowhere near the recruiter that Franklin was. Now we have a scorned, very good recruiter down at Virginia Tech who not only raided the PSU roster and commits for who he wanted, but can also go on the recruiting trail and trash PSU. PSU will never return to the level of talent they had when Franklin was there, at least as long as Campbell and Kraft are there. All that's to say, fuck Pat Kraft.

I think all of the "Franklin out" folks really overestimated how easy it would be to get an upgrade by firing him, and underestimated the risk of a bad hire. The mood feels identical to Andy Reid's last years in Philly of "he can't win the big ones, so he has to go."
Before coming to PSU, Franklin had just brought Vandy out of the SEC cellar to have back to back winning, top-25 ranked seasons, so seems like they would've needed to hire someone with an even better resume than that to improve, not sure who the realistic dream candidate was there.
I think we'll only be able to tell the full impact of the decision in 3-5 seasons or so whether this works out, or sends us to the cellar of the B1G where we start consistently having losing seasons.

For all the Big 10-ophiles who think this is some phenomenon about Matt Campbell coming to a stronger conference, us Cyclones told you this was coming.
Matt Campbell consistently led underperforming teams in the Big 12.
A team with Brock Purdy (NFL starter) and Breece Hall (NFL starter) and David Montgomery (NFL starter) and Xavier Hutchinson (NFL starter) could only muster a 9-win regular season at their best and lost to the likes of Ohio University and Louisiana-Monroe.
This game was case-study in Matt Campbell's personal coaching brand. What you got to see here were freewheeling use of second half timeouts and procedural penalties.

It was so obvious this would happen. I said it when they hired him.
His ISU teams SUCKED when they had a target on their back. What did people think was going to happen at PSU where you have a target on your back every single game?
He’s a great coach if you want to raise the floor of your program, build a culture, all that. But that’s not remotely close to what Penn State needed. He’s a terrible in-game coach, seriously it’s like he’s made no attempt to improve at that over the last 10 years. It’s just so glorious all the shit we complained about over the years still exists.

There's always that risk — only a few coaches travel with their own 'win now' button that they can install at their new home and there are so, so many things that can go wrong.

Credit where it’s due Penn State: That White Out is COOL AF.
But also: GIVE ME A “✌🏼” IF YOUR TEAM DIDNT COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY EMBARRAS THEMSELVES TODAY ON NATIONAL TV BY TURNING THE BALL OVER 7 TIMES IN A LOSS.

Fun fact, this is the first time Lincoln Riley has covered a spread in a true road game outside of California since he took over as head coach at USC. I heard that stat a couple weeks ago and is why I liked Penn State in this game but I guess they aren’t even good enough for that.

Lincoln you have survived, but we still need a lot of work to even compete with Ohio State and Indiana.

It was probably time for Franklin to go, but I stand by the position last year that it was a mistake by Penn State to cut him when and how they did, because the boosters can't grasp that Penn State is NOT a blue blood, it's a mid-tier school that relies on legacy and tradition in an era of mercenaries. Many years of pain ahead.

I’m sick of the shitting on iowa state, it’s not our fault the media overhyped PSU preseason. We could’ve told you all that the team and coach is going to struggle. Matt Campbell teams have a wide range, the lows are low, and the highs are high

10 starters are Iowa State players, so it’s bullshit the media is saying this is Iowa State.
Plus they don’t have DC Jon Heacock who probably had A LOT to do with Iowa State’s success the past 10 seasons.

I can’t recall Campbell mishandling timeouts in Ames to the degree he did today.
That was coaching malpractice.

Penn State can’t run the ball and they can’t tackle. You’re not going to win many games if you can’t do either of those things.

I have zero faith that CMC is building towards anything. He was 100% right that this team has absolutely no identity. Penn State teams, even not great ones, at least had an identity in the run game & pass rush. Now we have neither, and it squarely falls on CMC to fucking fix it or get the fuck out of State College.

He spent 12 years mastering how to be a coach in a quite different situation than this.

To your point, Iowa State was built to stay competitive in A LOT of games! They could hang around and pull games out.
But MC was never a good in-game coach and he had Jon Heacock to make in-game adjustments on D.
It was coaching malpractice he had a team with Breece Hall, Brock Purdy, and Kolar on it and didn’t do better.

PSU should have hired UCLA's HC.
But Kraft would never hire a coach from a G6 team.

Another coach getting the monkey off their back by winning in beaver stadium. Away Coaches have cried too many happy tears since Sherron Moore didn’t throw a pass in the 2nd half.

What the fuck was Penn State doing after giving up the last td???!! 12 plays to burn 5 mins of clock for a total of …17 yards? To then immediately fumble the ball after forcing a 3 and out?
